STANDERTON - ‘n Renosterkoei is Saterdag in die vroeë oggendure net buite Standerton doodgeskiet en van haar horing gestroop.

nie.‘n Opmerking is gemaak dat die trop renosters aan twee eienaars behoort en dat een van die eienaars besluit het om van die renosters, met die hulp van die Nasionale Parke raad, na ‘n ander plaas te skuif.

STANDERTON – Police members at Standerton Police Station are still baffled by a suicide that took place in the temporary holding cells at the Community Services Centre.

A 25-year-old suspect was brought to the station by a member of the community after he was severely beaten by angry community members who accused him of rape. According to sources within SAPS, the suspect allegedly raped a 17-year old girl on Tuesday, 17 May. It is reported that the suspect saw the girl walking from a tuck shop at 20:30 in Extension 6, he forced her into his shack and allegedly raped her. After the alleged rape the suspect gave the victim a piece of paper containing his name and cell phone number and let her go home.

The victim reported the incident to her mother the following morning, 18 May. The mother reported the news to her employer and they both took the victim to show them the shack where the alleged rape took place. Upon arrival the suspect was sitting in the shack and the victim positively identified him. It is reported that angry members of the community then attacked him with various home made weapons.

The mother’s employer rescued him from the mob justice and he drove the mother, victim and the suspect to the police station. Lieutenant Nhlabathi reports that the suspect was handed over to the police at 10:30 where he was placed in a temporary holding cell while SAPS members took statements from the victim and the mother.

It is reported that the suspect requested the help of a security guard at the station to assist him in calling his mother in KwaZulu-Natal. After speaking to his mother for fifteen minutes he was found hanging from the window frame with a thin string around his neck. Preliminary investigations indicated that the suspect used

the string from his track suit to hang himself. Lt Nhlabathi reports that the suspect was wearing only a tracksuit and pair of socks when he was placed in the cell. Paramedics were called to the scene and declared him dead.

The incident was reported to the Independent Police Investigation Directorate (IPID). The body was kept in the holding cell until an IPID official arrived at 14:45. When the official concluded his investigation the body was taken to the mortuary by the state Forensic Pathology Services. Lt Nhlabathi confirmed that a doctor confirmed that the victim was raped. An inquest and a case of rape were opened for investigation. DM

STANDERTON – Police have opened a case of culpable ho-micide for investigation following a car accident that claimed the life of an unknown woman. The fatal accident happened between Standerton and Morgenzon on Sunday, 15 May. According to a statement released by the police, the control room received a call at 02:00 reporting a car accident on the R39.

Constable Nkosi rushed to the scene and upon his arrival he found an overturned VW Polo. A few minutes later paramedics arrived on the scene and a female passenger was pronounced dead.

Siphelele Nhlapo from Thuthukani told the police that he was one of four occupants in the car travelling to Thuthukani. He said he was sitting in the back of the car and he did not recall what hap-pened. He could not say how he managed to free himself from the wreckage and he sustained minor injuries.

The other two occupants of the car were reported to be in serious conditions when they were evacuated to hospital for treatment. Lieutenant Nhlabathi confirmed that a case of culpable homicide was opened for investigation. DM

STANDERTON - Two people from Midway Halaal Food in Walter Sisulu Drive were robbed at 06:50 on Friday 20 May. According to one of the shop attendants, two men entered the shop pretending to buy cigarettes when one of them pulled out a knife. Moments later two more men entered the shop, this time one was wielding a handgun.

The robbers took off in the direction of the fire brigade in a silver BMW after they helped themselves to more than R2 000 in cash, cigarettes and cell

phones. A bullet was discovered after the robbery and it is assumed that one of the robbers tried to fire a shot, but his pistol jammed. Even though the two shop attendants were very shocked, they escaped unharmed and Kasselman Security Services was on the scene within minutes.

A few minutes later, a similar robbery was reported in Charl Cilliers. There is a possibility that it could be the same robbers, as the men also made use of a silver BMW and used the same modus operandi. JD

Jesus told this parable in scripture about a farmer who sowed some seed on different types of soil. Some of it took root and some did not. It says that when the farmer threw some seed on thorny ground, the thorns grew and choked out the seed. In this parable, the thorns represent the cares of this world. When you are full of cares and worry, it can choke out the fruitfulness of your life and make you stagnate and unproductive. We have to remember that every day God throws seeds into our lives -

seeds of blessing, joy, life, hope, provision. The question is, how are we receiving those seeds? Are we allowing the cares of this world to choke our spiritual life?

Paul told us in scripture how to deal with the cares of this world. In Philippians 4:6 he said, “Do not be anxious about anything.” Then he goes on to tell us how we can win the war on worry. He said, “In everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.”

Paul was saying, turn your worry list into a prayer list. Turn those things that are bothering you over to God. Be grateful. A grateful heart is a strong heart. We aren’t going to change our circumstances by worrying anyway. We won’t add to tomorrow. In fact, worry steals from tomorrow. It steals your confidence and peace.

Today, let your heart be good ground, ready to receive the seed of the Word. Cast your cares on Him. Be grateful. Sing songs of praise to Him all throughout the day. Don’t let the worries of this world rob you of your blessing. Instead, win the war on worry by living a life of prayer.

Reformation imminent at AzaleaSTANDERTON - “Your failures do not determine your future. Don’t look down upon yourself,” these were the words of Reverend Andrew Matsi as he and the mem-bers of a substance abuse campaign visited Azalea Combined School on Monday, 23 May.

The campaign was spearheaded by several institutions, including the CPF (Community Policing Forum), the SAPS and the Depart-ment of Community Safety, Security and Liaison in an effort to eradicate the use of drugs and alcohol at schools – something the pupils of Azalea Combined School have, unfortunately, become synonymous with. According to Ms Busi Khanye, a represen-tative of the aforementioned Department’s regional office in Ermelo, she and her col-leagues will be actively involved in the pro-ject until March 2017, after which they will

identify another problem school and inter-vene there.

The project will involve the SAPS search-ing the school and pupils for drugs, tak-ing the pupils on educational trips, having speakers address the pupils and involving them in various activities such as debates and ‘sport against crime’ programs. “Pre-vention is better than cure,” Ms Khanye ex-plained to the pupils.

During the morning’s procedures, the top performing pupils of Gr 10 to 12 were awarded trophies for their academic achievement up until the June exams. “The state of drug abuse in Standerton and Sak-hile is shocking, but if you use this oppor-tunity wisely you will improve your marks and be successful,” Mr Vincent Dikgale, another representative of the Department, concluded. Die tema van vanjaar se aan-bieding was ‘A night at the Oscars’ en die 24 finaliste het beslís hul deel gedoen om te verseker dat dit behoor-lik soos Hollywood in Standerton gevoel het.

Die aand se verrigtinge is met ‘n dansnommer deur al 24 finaliste afgeskop, waarna hulle die loopplank een-vir-een tydens die eerste afdeling – ‘In dít sal jy my nóóit sien nie’ – aangedurf het. Vanselfsprekend moes die deelnemers in iets geklee wees wat hulle nooit wil wees of in gesien wil word nie en het hulle die gehoor omtrént vermaak, aangesien sommige eerstespanrug-byspelers hul tokse en truie vir hoë hakke en somer-rokkies verruil het.

Tydens die tweede afdeling – ‘Ek, in die toekoms’ – kon die finaliste aantrek volgens die beroep wat hulle eendag graag sal wil volg. Basketbalspelers, lug-waardinne, onderwysers, akteurs en rugbyspelers was maar net ‘n paar van die beroepe wat Dinsdagaand die lig gesien het.

Die aand se grootste trekpleister was natuurlik toe die gaskunstenaar, Brendan Peyper, die verhoog met sy kitaar betree het. Hierdie jong sangsensasie het die gehoor met van sy grootste treffers soos ‘Stop, Wag, Bly Nog ‘n Bietjie’ vermaak en hulle later met ou gun-stelinge soos ‘Stille Waters’ van Laurika Rauch bederf. Hy het net goeie dinge van Standerton te sê gehad en gemeen dat die smullekker kos vir hom ‘n hoogtepunt was.

Die aand het daarna met die laaste afdeling, die formele drag, tot ‘n einde gekom waarin die deelne-mers onvoorbereide vrae gevra is wat hulle in ‘n paar sekondes moes antwoord. Tommy Gleeson en Michae-la Henri is daarna as Mnr en Mej SHS van 2016 be kroon en het van trots gestraal toe verlede jaar se wenners, Gizzelle Uys en Ruben Höhls, die wengordels oor hulle skouers drapeer het. SECUNDA - Almost 1 926 square metres of potholes, at an estimated cost of R150 000, have been repaired by the AfriForum Secunda branch.

This is one of the projects that AfriFo-rum launched as part of the organisation’s #do-it-yourself initiative and forms part of the organisation’s national Pothole Month that kicked off on 9 May. This month will see R1,2 million being spent in Limpopo and Mpumalanga to repair potholes. These costs will subsequently be recovered from the relevant municipalities who did not coo-

perate with AfriForum.“The Govan Mbeki Local Municipality

made its road works division available to AfriForum to help with the pothole repairs,” said Hillel Coetzer, AfriForum’s Regional Coordinator for Mpumalanga West. “We are excited about the Municipality’s attitude towards the project and their cooperation with AfriForum. This step ensures a posi-tive cooperative relationship between us and the local government,” said Hein Gon-zales, AfriForum’s Provincial Coordinator for Mpumalanga and Limpopo. JD

STANDERTON - Tydens die kompetisie wat van 5 tot 12 Mei in Réunion plaasgevind het, het Michaela Henri uitstekend presteer en ‘n gouemedalje in die Energy-afdeling verwerf deur die Banghra en ‘Slow-style’ danse van die styl te wen. Sy verwerf ook ‘n bronsmedalje in die Klassieke-styl en behaal ‘n posisie onder die top 12 van die Latynse-styl.

Altesaam 160 dansers het aan die kampi-oenskap deelgeneem met nie minder as 36 dansers in elk van haar onderskeie ouder-domskategorieë. In elke styl was daar drie uitdunrondes gehou, totdat daar ‘n semi-finaal gedans is met 12 van die 36 dansers. Uit die semi-finaal is daar slegs ses dansers gekies wat dan ‘n laaste keer hulle staal gewys het om van eerste tot sesdeplek ge-plaas te word. Vyf lande het met elke ronde ‘n verteenwoordigende beoordelaar op die vloer gehad en verskeie beoordelaars het mekaar deurlopend afgelos.

Buiten die solo-kompetisie is daar die Vrydagaand ‘n “showcase” gehou waar elke land verteenwoordigende dansers gehad het wat hulle vernuf gewys het en die ge-hoor met verskeie danse van hoë gehalte en kleurryke kostuums vermaak het.

Saterdag is die groepskompetisies gehou en kon enige danser, enige tyd, vir enige van die 12 danse waarin hulle afgerig is uitgeroep word om teen ‘n ander land mee te ding. Dit verskaf groot vermaak aan die gehoor, lei tot groot opwinding vir die hele groep betrokke en vriendskapsbande word tussen al die dansers versterk en gesmee. Hier gaan dit nie net oor wen nie, maar of jy die hart van jou opponent kan bereik.

Daar was darem tyd vir ontspan ook en almal het ‘n hele paar euros in die winkels

Goud vir Michaela in Réunion

Michaela Henri, danser van die CF Els Dans Studio en matriekleerling van Hoër-skool Standerton, het vanaf 5 tot 12 Mei aan ‘n Internasionale danskompetisie in Réunion Eilande deelgeneem. Sy dans ‘n goue- en bronsmedalje los en verower ook ‘n plek onder die top 12 dansers. Sy is ook reeds uitgenooi om deel te wees van die 2017 Suid Afrikaanse dansspan wat ‘n oudisie by ‘n vooraanstaande dansskool in Parys kan bywoon.


Standerton Akademie het Saterdag, 21 Mei, die geskiedenisboeke herskryf toe twee van die skool se rugbyspelers tydens die Bokkieproewe in Pretoria in hierdie gesogte span opgeneem is. Dit is die eerste keer in die skool se geskiedenis dat ‘n rugbyspeler ‘n Bokkietrui oor sy kop gaan trek. Van links na regs is Hendrik Hancke, mnr Steve Swanepoel (hoof) en Hennie Hancke.

Laerskool Standerton se o-13 B-netbalspan het Saterdag, 21 Mei, as die mediumskole-streekwenners én as die algehele groot- en mediumskolewenners in Ermelo uit die stryd getree. Hulle kwalifiseer vir die Mussa-uitspeelwedstryde. MORGENZON - Stock theft on the farms in and around Morgenzon has prompted police and livestock owners to embark on a campaign to send a stern warning to thieves who target farmers by stealing their livestock, that the law will deal with those who get arrested.

Morgenzon Communication Officer, Constable Poulose Nzimande, reports that due to a high rate of reported cases of stock theft, the farming community with the police and members of the Community Policing Forum called a public meeting at Morgenzon Community Hall on 11 May.

The purpose of the meeting was twofold - first to warn communities to stop buying raw meat in the streets, as most cases suggest that the meat sold on the streets, is livestock stolen from farms. Secondly to inform local people who possess livestock to practice brand marking on their animals as required by law. The SAPS Stock Theft Unit did not hesitate to tell animal owners that those found without brand marking, will be confiscated and owners will receive heavy fines or face prosecution.

Constable Nzimande said the meeting was a huge success, as members of the community committed to drive the campaign further. DM

STANDERTON - Only four boats with seven anglers entered for the Best Boat competition hosted by Standerton Boat Club on Saturday, 21 May.

The heaviest bag of the day weighed 57.4 kg with WK van der Merwe weighing the biggest barbel of 6.62 kg. The biggest carp of 4.34 kg was caught by Annerie van der Merwe with PG Gerber weighing the heaviest mudfish of 0,74 kg. Fish Eagle was

the best boat of the day. WK and Annerie van der Merwe were the men’s and lady’s winners of the day respectively. No junior anglers took part.

STANDERTON - Local golf enthusiasts were treated to a massive competition this past weekend as a total of 52 players tested their skills in the New Denmark Colliery closed Golf Day at Standerton Country Club on Saturday, 21 May. The competition was played in an IPS and a 4-Ball-Yellow-Ball format and had the Country Club in an excited mood that only a competition of this magnitude can provide.

In the end Francois Cronjé took home first place in the IPS competition with a score of 44 points. Hot on his heels are Attie Mouton (41), Fanie Botha (40), Theuns Adendorff (39) and Quintin Martin in fifth place with a score of 38 points. The prize for the most golf went to Hannes Vermaak, while Rozé Reiners had the longest drive (5) and Damian Brink had the most accurate drive (1/10).

Jaco Sutherland ended nearest to pin on two and 11, while Stephen Nortjé was crowned king of pin eight and 17.

The Yellow-Ball winners were also crowned: Gert du Preez, Patrizia Lombaard, Johann van Rensburg and Wessel Wessels (40). Fines went to Lourie Nel and Phillip van Wyk who lost the yellow ball on the first hole and Koos van Wyk for losing the yellow ball on the last hole. Wim van Niekerk was also fined for having two ‘lady’s’, while Quintin Martin was fined for ‘bringing his own caddy.’

The competition ended with a prize giving ceremony and an elegant dinner. Standerton Country Club once again proved that great sport only comes with great sportsmanship. DK

Standerton Country Club played host to the New Denmark Closed Golf Day this past weekend for which 52 players teed off. Nic Momberg was one of the local players who competed in the IPS and 4-Ball-Yellow-Ball competition.

STANDERTON - Twintig atlete van die Standerton Maraton klub gaan Sondag, 29 Mei tussen die sowat 15 000 deelnemers wees wat aan die jaarlikse Comrades maraton deelneem.

Hierdie jaar is die roete vanaf Pietermaritzburg tot in Durban, ongeveer 89 kilometer, en deelnemers het 12 uur tyd om die wedloop te voltooi.
