The suspects started shooting at the police behind them, and the police reportedly returned fire. No one was injured during the shoot-out.

The three suspects jumped out of the car into the bushes, but to no avail, as they were soon cornered and arrested. Police searched the car, but could not find anything incriminating in the suspects’ pos-session, including the firearms they used to shoot at the police. They were arrested and taken to Standerton Police Station, while other po-lice officers and farmers remained to search the area. Two bags full of cellphones, starter packs and tablets were later found in the bushes. It is reported that three more suspects, travelling in a Hyundai, are still at large. The Audi was sporting a false North-West number plate during the robbery, but they were soon changed to Gauteng plates. Both cars are from Gauteng.

The five suspects aged 26, 33, 35 and 37, were charged with pos-

session of stolen goods at Standerton Police Station, and face an ad-ditional charge of business robbery. One of the suspects is reportedly out on bail facing charges of armed robbery in Standerton. All five suspects were reportedly from the Gauteng. Reliable sources suspect that the group is operating as a syndicate who supply valuable infor-mation to other criminals. Whenever or wherever a robbery has been carried out, the goods are either delivered to the business the same day or just the previous day.

“This is indeed a successful breakthrough,” one officer said. Lieu-tenant Nhlabati confirmed that the value of the recovered goods is estimated at thousands of rands. The two cars were confiscated by police while the suspects were due to appear in Standerton Magis-trate’s Court on Friday, 20 November. An investigation is underway. DM / JD

SANCO leaders face court case

Mr Nicholas Selepe, addressing the masses, during a protest against the installation of smart meters on 19 October.

STANDERTON - The war seems far from over between SANCO leadership and Lekwa Local Municipality’s head honchos. This is confirmed by a looming court case against Messrs Nicholas Selepe and Tebello Selepe who both received a summons from the High Court of South Africa’s Gauteng Division. The pair is facing a contempt of court charge scheduled for 14 December.

The two leaders of the South African National Civic Organiza-tion – Lekwa Zone are third and fourth respondents respectively, as Lekwa Local Municipality is an applicant. The matter stems from an urgent court application instituted by Lekwa Local Mu-nicipality through their legal representative to interdict and re-strain respondents from proceeding with their planned protest on Monday, 19 October, within the applicant‘s jurisdiction. The re-spondents were interdicted and restrained from inciting members of the public to remove the applicant’s smart meters which have been installed at various locations within municipal jurisdiction.

According to the draft order, the application was received by the court’s registrar on Sunday 18, October and subsequently the draft application was scheduled to be heard by the presiding judge at 14:00 on the same day for a decision. It is alleged that the matter was eventually heard by the judge at 16:00. In the meantime Lekwa Local Municipality served a draft application order to the respondents earlier at 10:00 and 10:45 respectively on Sunday, 18 October. The court order landed on the court reg-istrar’s desk on Monday, 19 October. It was then forwarded to the Sheriff in Standerton to be served to the respondents as a court order. Despite all these efforts, the protest march proceeded as planned anyway.

In his response to the contempt of court case against them, Mr Nicholas Selepe said: “We were served with a draft order ap-plication by the municipality on Sunday morning, 18 October, before the judge presided on the application at 16:00; we were fooled to believe that it was an order. We scrutinized the draft application through the legal aspects and we were convinced that the draft application has no bearing to stop the protest march until the court has made the application an order. We therefore waited to be served with the court order that we were prepared to re-spect. It did not arrive until Monday morning, 19 October, and we proceeded with the march. We were served with a court inter-dict on Tuesday, 20 October at 15:00 after the march had already taken place. We are going to oppose the case against us.” DM

SAKHILE- The family of a 22-year-old wo-man in Extension Six is still in shock after she was shot by her ex-boyfriend on Saturday night at approximately 22:00.

According to a statement given to the police by the grandmother of the deceased, the wom-an was sleeping in her shack outside the fam-ily’s RDP house when the suspect arrived. He allegedly demanded that she open the door for him to go inside. The two then allegedly had a heated argument because she did not want him to come inside.

The ex-boyfriend then reportedly tried to break the steel door in order to force his way in. After failing to break the door, the suspect allegedly pulled out a gun and fired two shots at the woman. One bullet hit her in the chest and the second in the head. She collapsed and died instantly. When neigbours and the grand-mother heard the gunshots, they came out to

investigate. The suspect was seen fleeing the scene on foot.

Lieutenant Nhlabathi confirmed that the SAPS and paramedics arrived on the scene and police had to break the steel door to reach the victim. She was declared as deceased by para-medics and her body was taken to the mortu-ary. A case of murder was opened for investi-gation while the suspect is still at large.

According to the police, the suspect is a Zimbabwean national who is wanted for the murder of a woman who was found floating in the river with a knife still in her body in 2014. Lieutenant Nhlabathi told the media that the suspect is using a false identity document and is known as Sello Maphosa.

Members of the community are advised not to confront him as he is armed and highly dan-gerous. If spotted, people must report him to their nearest police station. DM

Kersfees kom, Kersfees kom...

For by the death He died, He died to sin [ending His relation to it] once for all; and the life that He lives, He is living to God [in unbroken fellowship with Him]. Even so consider yourselves also dead to sin and your relation to it broken, but alive to God [living in unbroken fellowship with Him] in Christ Jesus.

(Romans 6:10-11)The devil delights in reminding us daily of all our mistakes from the past. One morning I was spending my time with the Lord, thinking about all the areas in which I had failed, when the Lord spoke to my heart: “Are you going to practise fellowship with Me or with your problems?” It is our fellowship with God that helps and strengthens us to overcome our problems. Our relationship and fellowship is to be with God, not with our sins.

How much do you practise fellowship with your sins, failures, and weaknesses? Whatever amount of time it is, it is time wasted. When you sin, admit it, ask for forgiveness, and then continue your fellowship with God. We are alive to God, living in unbroken fellowship with Him. Don’t let your sins come between you and the Lord. Even when you sin, God still wants to spend time with you, hear and answer your prayers, and help you with all of your needs. He wants you to run to Him, not away from Him!

Lord, I want to live in unbroken fellowship with You. I consider my relationship with sin to have been broken on the cross and behind me. Amen.

Angry community members gathered near Sakhile Sta-dium and marched to the Lekwa Municipal offices on 19 October, in protest against the installation of smart meters.

The Police kept a close eye on the protestors as they escorted them to the main municipal building.

No one from the municipality accepted the memoran-dum and as a result they decided to submit it to the records department in the municipality.

The ratepayers and taxpayers are asking about the Mu-nicipal Manager, Mr Linda Dhlamini’s inappropriate un-availability to accept the memorandum on the day.

Ostracizing the Mayor now, may not be such a good idea as he inconveniently had to tour to Morgenzon on the day of the march. A confrontation between members of

the SANCO and the ANC occurred at the Sakhile netball court on 3 November. Two people from SANCO and four from the ANC sustained injuries. There were no police officers at the meeting. What are ultra-leftists, factional-ists, racists and right-wingers?

Our government must consist of strong people who are anti-racial. Whenever there is a fight between black and white people, it is racism.

When it is black against black, it is ultra-leftists. When others are not satisfied with something they are factional-ists. Only right-wingers exist in South Africa. If you are fighting with someone, expect a cheap political shot and nasty words, regardless of skin colour. Cedric “Jomo” Dhlamini

Reverend Neil Vels, of the Methodist Church, will be leaving Standerton shortly. His last sermon will be on 29 November. Reverend Vels will be relocating to Milnerton in Cape Town, where he will deliver his introductory sermon, according to tradition, on 25 December. Reverend Vels will also be tying the knot and settling down with Lynn Mildenhall. The community of Standerton and the Methodist congregation wishes him all the best in this new and exciting mission.

STANDERTON- A hole dug by Lekwa Local Municipality’s Department of Water and Sanitation three months ago remains open and might swallow anyone who should accidentally fall into it. A 5 m deep hole in Beyers Naudé Street is not cordoned off to warn passing pedestrians. Concerned residents called police to the gaping hole, and the police in turn called Cosmos News to highlight the threat the open hole poses to pedestrians. Municipal Manager, Mr Linda Tshabalala, promised to follow up with the relevant head of the department in order for the matter to be resolved. DM

The body of a 25-year-old man was recovered by divers from the High- and Lowveld with the assistance of the K9 Search and Rescue Unit of Middelburg. The person drowned on private land, next to Kriel Power Station, in a dam of which the water level is managed by Eskom.

SAKHILE - It was one of those busy Friday evenings and customers were in and out for last minute shopping at a tuck shop in Exten-sion Six on Friday, 13 November. Mere min-utes before the store closed, two unknown men walked into the shop pretending to be potential customers. Nobody, aside from the shop assistant and the pretend customers, were inside the tuck shop.

One of the suspects asked to buy airtime and when the shop-assistant turned around to serve him, he felt a fire-arm against his neck and was ordered to keep quiet. The suspects then closed the door and switched off the lights.

The suspects proceeded to tie his hands and feet. They then allegedly helped themselves to airtime vouchers to the value of R700 and

emptied R1 200 from the cash register. It is reported that they turned the place up-

side-down before they fled the scene. The vic-tim struggled to free himself from his bonds and he called the neighbours for assistance, but they were too late and the culprits had al-ready vanished into the night. The shop as-sistant was unharmed.

Lieutenant Johannes Nhlabathi said that the incident was only reported the follow-ing morning. A case of business robbery was opened for investigation.

No arrests have been made thus far. Police are warning all tuck shop operators to close up as early as possible and avoid opening too early as criminals are mostly active at open-ing and closing times. DM

STANDERTON - With hundreds of keen anglers attending the Khan’s angling clinic on Saturday, 21 November, and all the tips and tricks of the trade revealed by well-known anglers, the fish should start trembling.

The crowd peppered Loutjie Louwies, four times world champion, with questions regarding the do’s and dont’s of freshwater angling, whether it be normal fishing or

specimen fishing and he was all too keen to share his knowledge. Pierre Jacobs, Jannie Stadler, Ikraam Jooma and Ridwaan Docrat were also on hand to assist anglers in making an educated choice while stocking up on angling equipment.

Zahid Khan, owner of Khan’s Angling and Cycling in Standerton, wishes to extend his heartfelt gratitude to all who attended the clinic and for their loyal support. JD

If you are driving at night and suddenly get a puncture, drive on to the nearest place of safety before stopping to change the tyre. This is a method being used by thieves to force you to stop so that they can either rob you or hijack you once you are parked and outside your vehicle. Remember that this is just one of many ways in which thieves force you to stop. You must remain vigilant.

(Sonja Carstens) JD

On Friday, 20 November, MBT Petroleum Charl Cilliers was a hive of activity when the team from kykNET’s ‘Ontbytsake’ filmed an insert of the new filling station. Suppliers handed out samples of their products and everyone who supported MBT Charl Cilliers received free boerewors rolls. Members of the public can still enter the lucky draw by placing the tax-invoice of their purchase into a box at the cashier. Five hampers are up for grabs and the competition ends on 4 December.

SAKHILE - Residents of Ward 5 in Sakhile are fed up with the lack of service delivery. They decided to repair a portion of a gravel road in the residential area and funded the gravel and other materials from their own pockets.

According to the spokesperson of this group, many complaints were made about the condition of access routes, but neither the mu-nicipality nor the ward counsel-lor could give them feedback on when maintenance, if any, could take place. JD

This tent was erected over Dannhauzer Street in Meyerville over the past weekend and led to several complaints and inquiries. Tents erected over portions, or the whole driving surface of roads, are allowed. However, the necessary permission must be obtained from the local municipality as well as the neighbours and must be available on request.

Tent over roadSTANDERTON - Several complaints were received from readers complaining about the erection of tents across streets for functions. After investigating the matter, further evidence was given that this specific incident had the necessary permissions issued and was able to close the

road. According to the Traffic Department, people who want to close a certain portion of a road, for whatever reason, must apply for permission at least two weeks in advance. Permission must also be obtained from all neighbours and it must accompany the application. JD

A group of residents from Ward 5 in Sakhile took it upon themselves to repair the gravel road that gives them access to their properties. According to them nothing is being done by the ward counsellor or the municipality to maintain these roads.

SAKHILE - Several assault cases with the intention to inflict grievous bodily harm were opened at Sakhile Police Station over the last couple of days. On Monday, 9 November, two members of the public were arrested on assault charges after they were identi-fied by their two victims. The assault presumably stems from the two victims who allegedly stole a Ford Bantam bakkie and mem-bers of the public arrested them. The victims were severely assault-ed with hosepipes and belts and nobody wanted to point out the attackers. When asked, the victims pointed to the two suspects who claim that they are innocent and that the victims were assaulted by community members. Both victims were admitted to Standerton Hospital for treatment of their injuries.

In another instance, a woman and her boyfriend went to visit another man on 7 November. As the three were having drinks, the woman accidently pushed an ashtray over the edge of a table, and the ashtray broke. The woman and her boyfriend thereafter decided to leave the house, but they were followed by the third man who struck the woman with a chain on her head. She lost consciousness, but was later accompanied by her boyfriend to the police station to open a case of assault. Several other cases are also under investigation and include a son who assaulted his father with a spade, a mother who assaulted the father of her child and a man that struck his friend with a rock against the head. In most cases alcohol were involved and the Police urge community members to be more responsible. JD

PRETORIA - The Theo van Wyk Auditorium at UNISA was packed with sculpted and adrenalin-filled bodies as the 2015 WFF (World Fitness Federation) World Championships was held there for the first time in South Africa on Saturday, 7 November. Eighteen countries took part in this event to prove who the ultimate bodybuilding champion is. Partici-pants came from as far as Korea, France, Sweden, the USA, Iran, Australia, and Uganda.

Participants were judged according to the following crite-ria: overall physique, physical conditioning, degree of muscle development, symmetry (proportion) as well as separation

(definition) often referred to as being ‘ripped’ or ‘shredded’. The event consists of 26 categories in which contestants could compete.

Ivann van Wyk from Standerton was one of the South Afri-cans who took part in this global event. He wowed the crowd with is Magic Mike routine which was performed in his indi-vidual Free Posing Round. Van Wyk participated in the Clas-sic Bodybuilding Performance category where he received a place in the top 10.

Van Wyk was invited to take part in the 2015 WFF World Championships after receiving his South African National

Amateur Body-Builder’s Association (NABBA) colours on 10 October at the iSibaya Casino in Durban. He has only been competing as a serious bodybuilder for three years. He started to follow a strict eating plan and increased his time in the gymnasium from June of this year in order to compete in these events. Forty years ago, in 1975, Mr Olympia took place on the same podium as the WFF 2015 World Championships this year. Famous athletes, such as Franco Columbu, Ed Cro-ny and Frank Zane took part in Mr Olympia and the ultimate winner was Arnold Schwarzenegger who walked away with the overall title. CG
