Welcome to the November Network News. We admit that Network News might be seen as a bit of a “dinosaur”. What place has a little printed magazine in a world that is now digitally padded, mobied and apped into oblivion? We like to think there is a special value in something solid, edited and finite… a little rocky sanctuary amidst the tidal surge of raw data that crashes over us every day.The Internet has fascinating parentage. On one side military strategists trying to decentralise command and control in case of all-out nuking… on the other side the “Whole Earth” generation imagining a planetary network of light and freedom. No wonder the Internet is a mixed-up kid! Luckily, in its teens it found a mentor of real integrity: Tim Berners-Lee, who nurtured its potential into the World Wide Web, and he chose to gift it to humanity. The beauty of the WWW is to enable us to exchange our thoughts, ideas and creations with anyone anywhere. Freely and privately. There is absolutely no need for middlemen. Yet, inevitably, a cluster of profit-driven opportunists found ways to become gatekeepers and taxmen of the digital world. Google, for all its pretensions - is just an advertising agency; and Facebook, a college dating site that struck gold. These corporations bring with them massive data centres, burning carbon 365/24/7. And, as Ed Snowden revealed, this re-centralising of command and control is Xmas for the spies, hackers and security services! (See “The People’s Cloud” article on page 30)

The WWW is peer-to-peer (P2P) by nature. The collective hard drive space of all our computers can hold everything the WWW needs. Connected, we are a free, open, eco-friendly data network. There is no need for a closed, controlled, corporate “cloud” over our heads!Blessings to all beings

“To Touch'” said Michelangelo, “can be to give life”. Yet we live in a touch taboo society where media-fuelled sexualisation creates barriers to this most basic of human needs, essential to human growth and development, making the difference between thriving and merely surviving.

Our early experience of touch affects how we experience the world and how we learn to relate to one an other.  I believe that doesn't end in childhood. Throughout the various stages of our lives touch will have different meaning to us. It can nurture, support, motivate, heal; it can cause pleasure or pain in equal measure. I believe touch is the essence of human experience that connects us to all that is without and within. Conscious intention is the key.

Research  into motivational touch included a study of Soft Ball teams in America where teams were grouped into regular winners or losers. The winning teams had more physical contact between players, and between managers and coaches.

And those who work in palliative care know how holding someone's hand increases oxytocin levels which are known to help prevent feelings of isolation and fear and heighten feelings of peacefulness and belonging.

I have joined with Martin Jenner in founding The Conscious Touch Foundation - a not-for-profit social enterprise linking Touch Therapists (Servers) to those requiring conscious connection through safe (non-sexual) touch (Receivers).

We are both passionate about reducing isolation, anxiety and depression and are experienced facilitators of the fast growing

“Cuddle Community” and offer Cuddle events in Birmingham, Stroud and now Chester.

If you are drawn to finding out more about how you can become part of a conscious touch community in the Chester/North Wales area we are holding two events in November. (See advert on the following page.)

JIM’S STORYI first met Jim one glorious Monday

morning in 2008 when I turned up at the meeting place for the Coromandel hiking group in New Zealand. Observing the average age of the group to be 20 years my senior I thought, quite incorrectly as it happened, that this would be a doddle of a walk.

After the first mile I realised how wrong I was. 20 years older or not this group of elderly folk, mainly men were fit as fiddles and way ahead of me. Jim it seemed took pity on me and waited for me at the top of what I found to be a steep hill. Turned out he was an expat from the north west of England not too far from my home town. We hit it off right away with our northern quick wit.

Jim, then 77, had emigrated to NZ some 40 years earlier to take up a Maths teacher position in Auckland. He progressed to Deane of a private school where he was highly valued. He was also a keen actor and was still getting good parts in good plays. He was as sharp as a knife and had a razor sharp recall function - the type of

person you want on your quiz team. One thing Jim loved to do was to recite

Stanley Holloway’s Lancashire monologue Runcorn Ferry. He performed it so well and word perfect. Quite an entertainment he was.

This went on year after year at every opportunity until my 2012 visit when I was shocked to see how Jim’s health had deteriorated - mentally not physically. Firstly I didn’t believe that he didn’t recognise me when I turned up on the door step. I thought he was having a joke - sadly not. Neither could he tell the time, in fact he didn’t even know what a watch was. He took great delight at presenting me with 'a precious gift I have chosen and kept safe for you because you told me last week that you wanted one'. (I hadn't seen him for twelve months) - it was an old battery. My heart was full of sadness for this beautiful man who was losing himself.

Later that day his memory must have worked momentarily as he decided to try and recite the monologue.

As you can imagine it was not possible. His inability frustrated him, he became anxious, agitated and self abusive - hitting his own head 'to try and get it working again'.

I assured him it was ok, and coaxed him to sit down. He began to cry with frustration. I simply stood behind him and asked if he would like to be held. I placed my hands on his shoulders and held him close to me. He sobbed. I then gave him a chair and put both my hands gently but firmly on his bald head and held them there for a minute, then I sweeped down his neck to his shoulders firmly and slowly all the way to his hands. I held his hand for a few moments then returned to his head. His agitation had passed. His tears stopped.

What happened next was a great surprise. Out of the blue he began reciting the monologue. Word perfect and without stumbling he managed to recite the whole monologue. I was amazed and delighted.

When I left Jim that day he was in a much more contented state of being, and it turns out he slept much better every night forward than he had in years. His carer told me his mood was much lighter after my visit and he had recited the monologue a couple of times much to visitors’ puzzlement. I’m not sure how long this improvement lasted, but I believe that  - if someone can enjoy a more peaceful quality of life, no matter how temporarily, through something as simple as conscious touch - it’s a gift well worth sharing.

The Hearty HawthornJules Cooper

I recently had the awe-inspiring privilege of attending a “Hawthorn Initiation Retreat” with the amazing Pam Montgomery. Pam, a Plant Spirit Healer and practicing herbalist took me on one of the most beautifully challenging (much needed) journeys of my life which truly helped me to release so much blocked energy in my heart.

My relationship with Hawthorn over the past five years has been a strange and beautiful one, giving me a profound insight into her beautiful and metaphysical qualities. I was filled with so much joy on discovering the sheer abundance of Hawthorn growing in the hedgerows at my little farm and knew from that moment that she was here to teach me her magic and wisdom, little did I know though, how deep did those lessons go!

During one early spring a few years ago when the hedgerows were still within their winter’s deep-rest, something terrible happened to me, an experience thankfully that I will never forget. I was walking along the hedgerows beside my house and although the Hawthorns were still void of their emerald green leaves, I spied some very early nettles, all green and vibrant, glowing deep within the depths of the old brown leaf matter. Then just like a child without thinking, I rushed face first into a sharp twig causing major damage to my cornea. As you can imagine, I was in excruciating pain and after numerous visits to the eye hospital with many being post trauma flair-ups; I was told that I would need surgery and daily eye medication for the rest of my life.

It is only from learning to engage gently with the essence of Hawthorn, that I now understand her heartfelt teachings. Such early nettles, as I now see so clearly, are not there for the consumption of humans but an early nutrient-dense food for the overwintering insects that emerge from their own winter’s slumbers. Rushing

(which I now believe to be a form of violence) as I did, grabbing into the hedgerow taught me the true medicine of hawthorn, to go gently and lightly and to lead our lives with a heartfelt

perception!Hawthorn has now become a great ally

of mine and I find myself journeying with her on a number of levels learning about her food, medicine, magic and wisdom. In spring she graces me with a mass of delicate blossoms that fill the air with the most intriguing and heady scent, and whispering her magic of spring medicine in the form of teas and tinctures to help lift the heart’s spirit. I find that by adding rose petals later on to the mix has a really calming and loving effect. It is especially helpful with people who can be irritable and agitated with others...oh and very good with menopausal mood swings!

The flowers can also be sprinkled on cold dishes and the wonderful nutty tasting early leaves are a fab addition to salads or just to nibble upon when out and about. The leaves and unopened flower buds were so popular in days gone by; they were referred to as bread and cheese by country folk. I love the combination of cooked beetroot tossed in a warm dressing and sprinkled with the young leaves, the

7

colour combination and nutty flavour of the leaves with the sweet beetroot is a wonderful marriage.

The radiant ruby-red jewels that appear in autumn also tells us that Hawthorn is very much a tree associated to healing the heart, if you look at the berries they look like little red hearts (nature’s beautiful clues!) and has been used to treat various disorders in the cardiovascular system. The medicinal properties in Hawthorn are so powerful that it has been written by some herbalist that if you take pharmaceutical heart medication with the addition of hawthorn, you could overdose yourself, however others proclaim that it is perfectly safe... best check this out for yourself!

I love to nibble the fruits straight off the tree, to me they taste a little tart with the texture of a fluffy apple (spit out the pip though). Another thing I love to make with the berries is a raw Apple and Hawthorn fruit leather which I nibble on everyday to feel the magic flowing around my heart! Here is a medicinal recipe for “ Hawthorn Berry Leather” by Julie Bruton-Seal:

Pick ripe hawthorn berries and place in a saucepan with half their volume of water.Simmer gently for 15mins and allow to cool. Blend the mixture to loosen the pulp from the seed or mash it with a potato masher then rub the pulp though a course sieve. Pour this strained pulp into baking trays baking trays so that it is less than half a centimetre thick, and put the trays in an oven at the lowest temperature setting to dry. If you have food dehydrator, you can put the fruit leather in that, following the manufactures instructions. Leave it until the pulp is dry and leathery and can be peeled off the trays.Cut up ad store in airtight jars. Eat about a 2cm square every day to help keep your heart and circulation healthy.

The wood of hawthorn is very strong and beautiful with a warm orangey glow to it. I have used it many times when making gifts and have used hawthorn wood for my drum baton and also for my

wild-crafting stick. The long thorns were once used as brooch fasteners and as needles for using in the field with injured livestock...I have been told that the strong fibres of Plantago Major were used for the stitching thread.

My love for Hawthorn even extends to her being mentioned in my children’s book “The Little Hedgewitch” as a constant reminder of her wisdom and heart warming goodness...and with Hawthorn also known in the Ogham as a guardian of craftwork, it is said that by placing a vase containing the blossoms into workshop, it will help the wild-crafter to be more skilful and creative at their craft!

And my eye...apart from using eye drops every so often for when they get a little dry, I have stopped using daily and nightly medication a long time ago and have not had surgery...it is as good as healed. My medicine came from eating a lot of dandelions that contain wonderful eye strengthening properties and which appear like golden orbs in the garden that guide you straight to them. As for Hawthorn, at the time of injury, I was still very much grieving a loss of myself and the essence of Hawthorn helped me to trust in myself again. So I feel it is only fitting to end with some wise words from the lovely Pam Montgomery...

“Hawthorn relieves a heart saddened by separation or love loss, It opens the heart, helping one to give and receive love...and has the ability to put the heart back in its rightful place as the pilot, allowing the mind to serve as the co-pilot!”

Kay Rees-Davies, Anne Aspinal and Sion McIntyre 1st - 25th November. Kay is an artist who specialises in botanical subjects; plant forms, leaves, flower stems and bulbs, which have a hyper-real atmosphere, suggesting that they are still living and being. Anne’s work is a personal response to the patterns and rhythms inherent in the landscape and the subtle changes of light and colour through the seasons. Through sketchbook and direct painting, Sion captures landscapes and seascapes from tranquil to stormy, drab to effervescent. Ffyn y Parc Llanrwst, Conwy LL26 0PT, 01492 642070, welshart.netGwyn Roberts Until 22nd November. Gwyn’s striking paintings, and use of thick paint, capture the dramatic nature of the Welsh landscape and reflect his love for Wales. Plas Glyn Y Weddw, Llanbedrog, Pwllheli 01758 740763, oriel.org.ukNo School ~ Camille Blatrix Until 1st November. The exhibition, the first showing for Blatrix in the UK, presents entirely new work by the artist and responds, in part, to his visit to Mostyn and the town of Llandudno in 2014. The trip reminded him of childhood memories and of returning from a large city to a smaller town to visit family and friends. For the show, Blatrix has invited his parents to present their own work (his mother is an ceramicist and his father is a former artist), which reflects the feelings that arose during his visit to Mostyn. In so doing, the exhibition comes to discuss issues of biography, influence, upbringing and artistic career. Mostyn, Vaughan St., Llandudno LL30 1AB. 01492 879201, [email protected] In Black and White ~ Charles Tunnicliffe and the Art of Scraperboard Until 6th December. This exhibition was inspired by the ‘Votive Offerings’ excavated from the small lake ‘Llyn Cerrig Bach’ on Anglesey. Many of the objects discovered were Iron-age artefacts originating from Southern England and Ireland suggesting that the fame of ‘Llyn Cerrig Bach’ as a holy site had spread well beyond the immediate area. Carroll is intrigued by the spiritual and emotional connection these ancient people had with water. Oriel Kyffin Williams, Ynys Mon 01248 724444.Womens Art Society ll Until 1st November. Clifton Practice Hypnotherapy TrainingClaire Wiggins

From February 2016, people wishing to train with the prestigious Clifton Practice Hypnotherapy Training (CPHT), will be able to do so in Conwy, North Wales.

The CPHT Hypnotherapy Practitioner Diploma (HPD) uses Solution Focused Hypnotherapy primarily, but includes in its syllabus, the very best of other, more traditional approaches. The Solution Focused approach uses practical, modern and well researched strategies to help people make significant, positive changes in their lives in a relatively short period of time. The focus is always on the present or the future, never on the past. The course is hands-on and practical. From the first month, students are encouraged to see people, initially friends and family, and then later on to see “clients” with simple,

stress-related conditions, until, upon graduating, they have set up their practice and have begun to establish themselves in business, backed up by first class marketing advice and lectures as part of the course syllabus.

The HPD is externally verified by NCFE and is considered the “gold standard” in hypnotherapy training. Upon successfully completing the course, students also receive the Diploma in Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (DSFH). The CPHT specialises in producing successful practitioners, both in part-time and full-time careers. The course runs in Connaught House, Riverside Business Park, Benarth Road, Conwy.

The People’s CloudAn Introduction To Peer To Peer Cloud Computing (P2PCS)

Ozalp Babaoglu & Moreno Marzolla

Many of the most popular and successful Internet services today, including Netflix, Instagram, Vine, Foursquare, and Dropbox, make use of commercial clouds.

These clouds might seem a bit ethereal to their end users, but they in fact require some very down-to-earth facilities. Their stadium-size data centers are immensely costly to construct, and, not surprisingly, most are run by giant corporations like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft. Each offers a variety of service models, depending on exactly how the customer interacts with its cloud-computing environment.

But is this the only way cloud computing can work? At the University of Bologna, in Italy, we’ve been investigating a very different strategy to do cloud computing without those giant centralized facilities at all—using peer-to-peer technologies of the kind sometimes associated with shady file-sharing operations. Their use here, though, could help democratize cloud computing. Our prototype software is still at a very early stage, but its development and similar successes by researchers elsewhere show real promise.

Placing the physical infrastructure for a cloud-computing operation where it’s usually found, in a single massive data center, has definite advantages. Construction, equipment procurement, installation, and maintenance are all simplified, and economies of scale reduce costs. On the other hand, a single large data center consumes an enormous amount of electrical power, often

comparable to what you’d need to run a small town, and dissipating the waste heat it generates is usually a big headache.

Perhaps the most serious shortcoming, though, is that a centralized cloud-computing facility can end up being a single point of failure, no matter how cleverly it is designed. Redundant

power supplies, backup power generators, and replicated network connections help, but they can’t protect absolutely against catastrophic events such as fires, hurricanes, earthquakes, and floods.

Another drawback of centralized clouds is that their geographic location, which may be best for the owners, may not be best for the customers. This is the case, for example, when governments place restrictions on sensitive data crossing national borders. A data center located in one country may then be off-limits to customers in some other countries.

Cloud-service providers have increasingly addressed these concerns by using not just one but several far-flung data centers connected through fast private networks. Doing so not only protects against local catastrophes, it also provides customers with more options for locating their data.

What would happen if you took this trend in geographically distributing cloud infrastructure to its logical conclusion? You’d end up with clouds made up of millions of individual computers distributed across the globe and connected through the Internet. We would call this a peer-to-peer (P2P) cloud

Page 31: 270 NOVEMBER 2015 NN v2 - network newsnetwork-news.org/nnwp/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/... · ideas and creations with anyone anywhere. Freely and privately. There is absolutely no

31

because it shares many of the characteristics of various P2P systems developed for file sharing, content distribution, and the payment networks of virtual cryptocurrency schemes such as Bitcoin.

In principle, a P2P cloud could be built using the ordinary computing, storage, and communication equipment found now in people’s homes, with essentially zero initial investment. Broadband modems, routers, set-top boxes, game consoles, and laptop and desktop PCs could all contribute. The challenge is to turn this motley collection into a coherent and usable cloud infrastructure and offer its services to customers. You also have to ensure that the salient features of clouds—on-demand resource provisioning and the metering of service—are maintained.

This would surely be tough to do, but think of the advantages. First, there would

be no single entity that owns or controls it. As with most other P2P applications, a P2P cloud could be created and operated as a grassroots effort, without requiring the permission or consent of any authority. People would choose to participate in a P2P cloud by installing the appropriate client software on their local machines, and the value of the resulting cloud infrastructure would be commensurate with the number of individuals who are contributing to it.

A second advantage comes from the fact that a P2P cloud’s components are small, individually consume little power, and well distributed. This drastically reduces concerns about local catastrophes. It also removes the usual worries about heat dissipation.

Are you what I call a “perfect lifer”? These are people who live their lives rather as one might set about building an ideal house. That’s to say they start off with a set of plans and gradually bring together the various elements in a very controlled and ordered way: training and education, qualifications, first steps on their career ladder, life partner, mortgage, children, senior position at work, and, in due course, grandchildren and retirement. These are the folk who think of relationships which last less than a lifetime as “failed”, and view anything less than a perfect career progression as a mess. Like so much of our mental furniture, their underlying assumption, that life should be an orderly progression of steps in the commission of that glorious project, A Happy And Successful Life, is often implicit and unexamined. That is, until there is a glitch. Perhaps their career doesn’t progress quite as they anticipated, or maybe they don’t find that their first long term relationship is quite the meeting of true minds they had hoped, or their child decides to drop out of college. Perfect lifers then have two major obstacles to their happiness. Not only do they have the glitch itself to contend with, but in the face of such crises, they are brought into the very awareness their life strategy usually successfully obscures: that our range of control is quite limited, and that only life comes with a lifetime guarantee.

Sometimes the plans of perfect lifers do

work out. This can be even worse. They may realise too late, not so much that they

have nothing to show for what they have achieved, but rather that there is nobody very much to show. Nobody is as interested, or as invested in our lives as we are ourselves. A life lived to impress others is a life

wasted. It’s not so much what you have at the end, but what you did on the way to the end, that matters.

When we examine the plans and assumptions we have about the life we are trying to lead, we will very likely realise that we are not the architects of them. Far more likely, we are living the life we imagine would make our parents proud, or living a life designed to prevent bad things from happening, rather than creating opportunities for those good things we might dream of if only we had a bit more courage.

texture of our purchase may be variable, and recommends we see this variability as the manifestation of a unique product, with a character all of it’s own. Our lives are like that. We can see the individual variations and discontinuities as blemishes and bemoan them, or we can see them as markers of uniqueness and choose to celebrate them.

A life well lived is a life in which one engages with a reality, which is imperfectly apprehended, messy, confusing, and therefore interesting. It is a life lived passionately, not perfectly. Passion comprises fear and hope, anxiety and courage, in equal measure. There need to be good times and bad, struggles and challenges, some projects which reach completion, and some, like the threads in handmade fabrics, which peter out. When one realises that the process of living is the product, then no experience is wasted, and there are no dead ends.

Living life then, is less like building a house, and more like developing a garden. A house can be imposed on a landscape. A garden must accommodate to the contours of the land; to the waterways, many of which will be underground and unseen, and to the local climate. A garden, like all living things, is in a state of flux. Gardeners leave no monuments. Gardens decay and adopt once more the general features of the landscape they inhabit soon after they stop being tended. If we want to be happy, then we need to accept that, although life calls us to assert ourselves, we respond to that call in a universe where relatively little can be planned or controlled.
