The electrons in the outer energy level are called valence electrons

What are valence electrons?

Practice

Page 6: 2728 Valence Electrons and Periodic Basics Starter Practice: Connection: Answer questions using Periodic Basics 1. What patterns do you see? 2. What do

How do we know how many valence electrons does an element have?

• The group number tells us how many valence electrons are in each element.

Page 7: 2728 Valence Electrons and Periodic Basics Starter Practice: Connection: Answer questions using Periodic Basics 1. What patterns do you see? 2. What do

Atoms of elements in the same group have the same number of electrons in the outer orbitals/levels of their atoms Exceptions:

Transition elements (3-12) Helium (actually has 2 valence electrons)

Group 1 = 1 electron

Group 2 = 2 electrons

Group 8 = 8 electrons

Except for He, it has 2 electrons

How many electrons do each of these atoms have in their outer

orbital/level?

What group (family) do these elements belong

to?

Now Let’s Try Lewis Structures1) Find your element on the periodic

table.2) Determine the number of valence

electrons.3) This is how many electrons you will

draw.

Page 20: 2728 Valence Electrons and Periodic Basics Starter Practice: Connection: Answer questions using Periodic Basics 1. What patterns do you see? 2. What do

Lewis Structures• Find out which group (column) your element is in.

• This will tell you the number of valence electrons your element has.

• You will only draw the valence electrons.

Lewis Structures1) Write the element

symbol.2) Carbon is in the 4th

group, so it has 4 valence electrons.

3) Starting at the right, draw 4 electrons, or dots, counter-clockwise around the element symbol.

C

C

1) Check your work.

2) Using your periodic table, check that Carbon is in the 4th group.

3) You should have 4 total electrons, or dots, drawn in for Carbon.
