Let’s Spring Into March! The groundhog saw his shadow in

February, which means an early spring! With spring right around the corner, there is a lot of preparation to do. Goingoutside again is so exciting after beinginside almost all winter. Take a minute totake in the beautiful scenery around youand take this opportunity to jump startsome healthy habits:

Spring CleaningTime to declutter and get rid of clothes

and items you can do without! Donatethe items to a good cause or give them toa friend! Make more time for yourself byclearing your schedule. Schedule time toaccommodate an activity you enjoy!

Get Healthy OutdoorsOne of the best feelings is being able

to walk outside again and not be facedwith chilly wind temperatures. Take astroll around the outside property and

soak up some natural andhealthy Vitamin D. Always makesure to protect yourself whileoutdoors. If walking outdoorsalone is not your favorite activity, then start or join an outdoorwalking group!

Eat HealthyFresh fruits and vegetables will

be in season. Swap out someheavy soups for salads.Incorporate fresh fruit andvegetables in your meals to giveyou natural energy!

Try These Spring ExercisesWalking is a low impact exercise

that allows you to move at a pacethat is right for you. It is key tohave the right shoes and be sure tostretch afterward.

Swimming is low impact andimproves endurance andflexibility. Water relieves the stresson bones and joints. Doing lapsin the pool works all muscles bystretching and flexing.

Cycling is a low impact exerciseand easy on the joints! Use thebiking trails around the Village.

Stretching improves flexibilityand range of motion. Stretches inthe morning and evening arebeneficial to keep your musclesflexible.

Gardening activities, like diggingin the dirt and pulling weeds, helpmove your muscles. Use agardening stool to help avoidinjury.

Leprechaun Lore! The Irish fairy known as a

leprechaun is a familiar figure duringSt. Patrick’s Day (March 17)celebrations. Here are more fun factsabout this wee little man:

• Leprechauns are shoemakers, andlegends say they can be detectedby the tap-tap-tapping of a tinycobbler’s hammer.

• If a leprechaun is caught, he willoffer three wishes in exchange forhis freedom.

• There are no female leprechauns.• Did you know that Leprechauns

originally wore red! According tothe book Legends and Stories ofIreland published in 1831,leprechauns wore red and acocked (tri-cornered) hat, shoesand buckles.

• According to legend, leprechaunsdance the Irish jig so much theywear out their shoes.

• The original name for leprechaunwas lobaircin meaning‘small-bodied fellow.’

• Some stories about leprechaunssay that they are mischievouswhile other stories say they areharmless creatures that keep tothemselves.

• Some legends say leprechaunscarry one gold coin for everyyear they have been alive.

• The Irish isle may havepopularized the legend ofleprechaun, but they weren’tthe first to create stories aboutsmall people. Holland, forinstance, has the “Kabouter,” asmall “gnome-like” creaturethat cobbles shoes (betterknown today as a “gnome”).

No matter what you believe, St.Patrick’s Day is always a fun holidayand we hope the luck of the Irishfollows you wherever you may be!Happy St. Patrick’s Day!!

Time to Spring Forward!Spring is the time of year when we

must ‘spring’ forward into daylightsaving time. Effective April 2, 2006,Indiana became the 48th state toobserve daylight saving time. Currently,80 of Indiana’s 92 counties are oneastern time, while the rest of thecounties observe central time. Those inthe central time zone are located in theGary and Evansville metro areas of thestate. Regardless of which time zoneyou are in, we will all spring forwardtogether!

With the state being rich inagriculture, many farmers have beenopposed to daylight saving time. Theirdays are governed by the sun, not theclock. They argue that when the timesprings forward, they are still workinginto the evening, while most othershave been off work for hours.

Supporters of daylight saving timeagree that Indiana should have atimekeeping system that is in sync withthe rest of the nation to preservebusiness practices. They say that manybusiness hours have been lost due toout-of-state colleagues not being ableto keep up with the time differences.

No matter what side you agree with, daylight saving time is coming! Markyour calendars for Sunday, March 13 at2:00 AM and set your clocks forwardone hour before you go to bed Saturdaynight. Happy Spring!

VolunteerCorner

This month’s featured volunteer isMario Antonetti. Mario and his wife,Marge, moved into a cottage in August2015 as they awaited completion oftheir new hybrid home, which theymoved into mid-January.

Mario said that his career withUARCO left no time for volunteering.Since moving back to the area 23 yearsago, he has volunteered with WALAand St. Elizabeth Hospital. And, eventhough Mario has moved twice in thepast six months, he still found timeto volunteer.

Mario says moving into Westminsterwas an adjustment; and, he feels thatbecoming involved has helped. A loveof books and wanting to be engagedled to Mario’s recent appointment asChair of the Library Committee. Hesaid he is enjoying his new role and ispleased with the transition thanks tothe wonderful guidance he receivedfrom Mary Jane Fleener.

Mario recommends to new residents,“Get active in the community. Getinvolved. It is good for the soul.”

Hello From the Health Center! In February, we celebrated Mardi Gras with decorations, activities

Love wasin the air as we celebrated Valentine’s Day sharing chocolates andflowers with one another. We also had a visit from a furry friend, apuppy named Kalim. As he explored the building, meeting and greetingthe residents with a wagging tail and wet nose, he turned all frownsupside down.

This month, we will celebrate March birthdays with cake andrefreshments. We also will have some new musicians visiting. We willcelebrate St. Patrick’s Day and Easter with activities and decorations. We will continue to have coffee and donuts every Friday morning. Wealso bake cookies that are served every other Tuesday.
