It was the most important change to the company’s products in 42 years. By 1966 Sales of the 4020 accounted for 48% of all John Deere tractor sales.

John Deere made their first unstyled row crop tractor in 1929 to compete with the Farmall. In 1933 John

Deere started experimenting with what would come to be known as the Model A. The new model A

went into production in 1934. The A was by far the most popular two-cylinder tractor that John Deere

produced. The next year, the Model B was introduced. It was one third smaller than the A which made

it ideal for smaller farms. A few years later, the Model G was introduced in 1937. It remained unstyled

for several more years than the A and B.
