"With both interest rates and housing prices atrecord lows, now is a great timeto buy a house. However, it isimportant for first-timers don'trush into buying a house just to

take advantage of the tax credit."The BBB offers the following guidance regarding the taxcredit: Don't rush in. Takingtime to fmd the right house, inthe long run, is more importantthan receiving the tax credit andhaving a house that is not rightfor you or not being very sell-able in the future. Definition of a first-timehome buyer (under the tax credit gUidelines): an individualwho hasn't owned a principalresidence in the previous 3years; a vacation home is notconsidered a principal residcnce; in order for a married

couple to qualify, both partieshave to meet the above requirement. Income requirements. Toreceive the maximum credit, the"modified adjusted" grossincome cannot exceed $75,000for an individual or $150,000for a couple. The credit isreduced for singles earning upto $95,000 and couples earningup to $170,000.
