PASTOR’S COLUMN: January 3, 2021 The Second Sunday of Christmas As I write this (a few weeks ahead of time) the company that prints the bulletin needs the original copy because they will be closing for Christmas and New Year’s Day. I do not know if we are allowed back inside the parish hall/gym to celebrate our liturgy. I am sure this was a Christmas and New Year we never expected and hope we never have to celebrate again. I pray that the parish has not lost anyone to the virus and I pray that you and your families and friends have been safe and protected and you have had no experience of loss! When we get old(er), just think of all the stories we can tell! I learned many years ago to “take things one day at a time”. Unfortunately there are days when several “things” will gang up on me at once! That is when I have to pray all the more! God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” Also, the prayer of Fr. Mychal F. Judge, O.F.M. FDNY Chaplain who died on 911 Lord, take me where You want me to go; Let me meet who You want me to meet; Tell me what You want me to say; And keep me out of Your way. May our faith bring blessings, hope and courage. May the New Year bring joy and relief.

PRAYER FOR EPIPHANY Dear Jesus, as You led the Three
Kings to You by the light of a star, please draw us ever closer to You by the light of Faith. Help us to desire You as ardently as they did. Give us
the grace to overcome all the obstacles that keep us far from You. May we, like them, have something to give You when we appear before
You. Amen
Ayúdanos a desearte
Amen.

Apostolic Penitentiary Note
The Apostolic Penitentiary in its note has determined that “the cases of grave necessity” envisaged by Canon Law 961 apply today “especially in places that are most affected by the pandemic contagion, and last until the [Covid-19] phenomenon has ended.” It added that “any further specific determination” regarding general absolution “is assigned by law to the diocesan bishops, always taking account of the supreme good of the salvation of souls.”
First, we examine our conscious, then pray an act of contrition "out of love for God." Being sorry out of love for God has often been described as having a desire to be reunited to God because of who he is―because of God's perfect love for us, and be-cause of sorrow for having offended God by sin. It means wanting to live in unity with God, and to put aside the sins that stand in the way. There is no set formula for making an act of contrition, but a com-mon one reads as follows:
“My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against You, whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with Your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin.”
Second, a Catholic must make a firm commitment to go to confession when that becomes possible. An act of perfect contrition is not a replacement for the sacrament of penance―far from it.
The sacrament of penance remains the sole, ordi-nary means for the forgiveness of mortal sins after baptism. Contrition is about conversion, which means turning away from attachment to sin, and turning toward the sacraments.
Pope Francis encouraged Catholics confined to their homes to ask God for forgiveness and then to go to confession when they are able.
“You do what the Catechism says. It is very clear: if you do not find a priest to hear your confession, speak to God, he is your father, and tell him the truth.... Promise him: ‘Later I will confess, but forgive me now.’ And immediately you will return to the grace of God,” Pope Francis said.

THE EPIPHANY
At the beginning of the New Year we celebrate both Mary, the Mother of God and the Epiphany, which is when the wise men came from afar to worship baby Jesus. Imagine that you are living a long time ago in Bethlehem and your parents have invited a poor family to stay at your house, a mother, a father, and a baby. One day something amazing happens. Some rich men from a far away country came to see the baby and bring expensive treasures for him! Do you know who the family is now? Who is that baby? The baby is Jesus, of course, and the mother is Mary. She holds Jesus on her lap so the wise men can bow down to Him and worship Him. Mary co-operated with God to bring Jesus into the world so that we could all see and love and worship Him.
