FROM THE PASTOR

Dear Parishioners,

Resurrection and Freedom

The Resurrection and the sending of the Holy Spirit call us to freedom (Gal 5:13) because of his Resurrection Christ has set us free from the slavery of sin. (Gal 5:1).

“Today they have extended in a great way the range of the abuses of freedom, and this leads to new forms of slavery, very dangerous ones, because they are disguised under the appearance of freedom. This is the paradox, the profound drama of our time: on behalf of freedom slavery is imposed.” John Paul II, Sunday Homily, June 28, 1992.

Saint Peter already warned against these abuses, and exhorted the faithful to be truly free without using your freedom as a pretext for evil (1 Pt 2:16), and Saint Paul admonished not to take freedom as an excuse to serve the flesh. (Gal 5:13)

Authentic freedom identifies with holiness, with the New Law, with the Christian faith, and with charity. It is liberty of the children of God (Rom 8:21).

Freedom has truth as its foundation as Our Lord showed when he said, the truth will make you free (Jn 8:32). Freedom is charac-teristic for those who allow the Holy Spirit to lead them: the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom (2 Cor 3:17).

This is why Saint Augustine teaches, “Love, and do what you will.”

Saint John of the Cross places freedom at the summit of the mount of perfection, “There is no road here, for there is no law for the righteous man.”

Saint Thomas Aquinas teaches: “Free is he who is the cause of his own action; a servant is he whose cause of action is his mas-ter. Therefore, he who acts by his own decision acts freely; he who acts by another agent, does not. Thus, he who avoids evil not be-cause it is evil but because it is God’s command, is not free; but he who avoids evil because it is evil, that one is free. The Holy Spirit, who makes the soul perfect interiorly through the good habit, ac-complishes this. The result is that the soul abstains from evil be-cause of love, as if it were God’s command. Therefore it is called free, not because it submits to divine law, but because it is inclined by good habits to do what is required by the divine law.” Com-mentary on the Second Letter to the Corinthians, 3, 112.

Happy Easter ! —Fr. Walter Mallo, IVE, Pastor

Confessions — 1:30pm Holy Mass — 2:30pm

One of the greatest gifts the Catholic Church has been given in the 20th century has been the messages given to us by Our Lord Jesus through Blessed Sr. Mary Faustina Kowalska, of Cracow, Poland, especially His message regarding the Feast of Divine Mercy.

“I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls, and especially for poor sin-ners. On that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of Graces upon those souls who approach the fount of My mercy. The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain com-plete forgiveness of sins and punishment...“

If you have not already read the diary of Sr. Faustina and would like more information about this special gift, please find and read a copy, visit www.divinemercysunday.com, and/or visit our library or gift shop.

Reception for

Father Paul Coleman

Wednesday March 26, 2008,

7:30 PM Holy Mass 8:30 PM Reception

Everyone is invited to our potluck reception for Father Paul Coleman—one last opportunity to show our appre-ciation and say farewell. As reported in last weekend’s bulletin, Fr Paul Coleman has chosen not to take perpetual vows with the IVE reli-gious order and has been offered a position within the Diocese of Oakland (see reprint on page 5). Although he will not be far, he will be missed. Please join us after our regular Wednesday night Novena and Mass to Our Mother of Perpetual Help for one last toast and potluck reception with Fr. Paul — save him a place in line!! We’ll have individual buffet tables set up for finger foods like sandwiches, salads/veggies, and desserts — or if you know what Fr. Paul’s favorites are, feel free to bring it along. Questions? Call Karen Ruiz @ 408-988-4585x2125.

Almighty and eternal God, you created all things in wonderful beauty and order. Help us now to perceive how still more wonderful is the new creation by which in the fullness of time you redeemed your people

through the sacrifice of our Passover, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.

May Our Gracious Blessed Mother enkindle in our hearts the same love for God that She had at the time of the Incarnation.

The Institute of the Servants of the Lord and the Virgin of Matará

Founded March 19, 1988

Celebrating 20 Years of Service Our Founder: Father Carlos Buela Father Carlos Miguel Buela, IVE was ordained a Catholic priest on October 7, 1971. From the beginning of his priesthood he worked consistently in youth ministry, with the conviction that the Church takes care of young people not because of tactics, but by vocation. He has written many spiritual and catechetical works, as well as a large number of articles published in different magazines.

On March 25, 1984, the solemnity of the Annun-ciation, Father Buela founded the Institute of the Incarnate Word (IVE) and then the Institute Ser-vants of the Lord and the Virgin of Matará (SSVM) on March 19, 1988, the feast of Saint Joseph.

We have both contemplative and ac-tive branches, and share the same charism: the prolongation of the In-carnation of the Word of God in all the manifestations of the human per-son with a specific aim of evangeliza-tion of the culture. We have over 1000 religious priests and sisters working in missions around the world. Together with our Third Order Members, we make up the Religious Family of the Incarnate Word. Cur-rently, Father Buela is the Superior General of the male branch, and resides in Segni, Italy.

The Cross of Matará (part of SSVM Habit) In 1971 the Cross of Matará was rediscovered near the Salado River in Argentina. According to tradi-tion, the Cross sustained the indigenous groups who lived there in Matará and they considered the Cross to have supernatural powers. The origins of this cross date back to the 16th century, approximately 100 years after the discovery of America. Made from mistol (a regional plant), the Cross is composed of

two parts: the vertical piece of wood that measures 47 centimeters in length and the horizontal piece that measures 17 centimeters. Dur-ing the 16th century, the Jesuits established various missions throughout South America in order to evangelize the native people. Unfortunately, these people did not have writing, so the Jesuits de-cided to inscribe the Gospel message in wood in order to leave the natives a way to remember the teachings. This was how the Cross of Matará was born. It is a special cross containing the good news of the Gospel inscribed on its surface with drawings—the same Gospel that drew the first missionaries to the lands of the Americas.

IVE Third Order Meeting

Our monthly potluck and meeting will be held Saturday, April 5, 2008, at 6:15p.m. Everyone is welcome to join us. As parishioners in a parish conducted by the IVE, come learn what it means to be missionaries in our own life, at work, in our families, and in our service at Our Lady of Peace.

Bring your favorite Spring Treats to share for dinner at 6:15pm. After dinner, your children will be entertained by activities with one of the Sisters during our discussion.

The Institute Servants of the Lord and the Virgin of Matará and The Institute of the Incarnate Word (IVE), comprised of religious priests and brothers, share the same charism, have twin constitutions and both include active and contempla-tive branches.

These religious institutes, along with the Third Order, make up the Religious Family of the Incarnate Word.

Thank you. . . .Please join me in congratulating the Ser-vants of the Lord and the Virgin of Matara as they just cele-brated the 20 year anniversary of their founding. Let us also thank our local community of sisters for their tireless works for Our Lady of Peace Church, for the Glory of God! -Fr. Walter Mallo, IVE

What is the difference between diocesan and religious order priests?

Both diocesan and religious order priests share in the one ministerial Priesthood of Jesus Christ. What differs is the expression of that Priesthood.

A diocesan priest is under the authority of his Bishop. He has promised to pray the Liturgy of the Hours daily, obey his Bishop and observe celibacy. He does not live in a religious community per se, though he may live with other priests. Their primary responsibility is meeting the spiritual needs of the Catholics in their diocese. Generally, but not always, this means parish ministry. Parish priests are to live near the people they are serving. In the United States, he wears the black cassock or a black suit with the white roman collar.

A religious order priest is under the authority of his Superior. Like his diocesan counterpart, a religious order priest, during his Ordination to the Diaconate, promised to pray the Liturgy of the Hours daily. He has professed the vows of chastity, poverty and obedience. He typically lives in one of the communities of his order and wears the religious habit of his Order. In the case of the IVE, whose goal is “inculturation of the Gospel –to evangelize all cultures. . .”, his assignment would be based on the needs of the IVE missions around the world, as determined by his superiors.

One notes that the religious order priest has foregone the ownership of materials goods; the diocesan priest has not. Nevertheless, the diocesan priest is to live in a spirit of detachment concerning material goods, using them judiciously and as necessary.

Easter Sunday Page 5

A Message to the Parish, from Father Paul Coleman

Dear Parishioners, I have been serving at Our Lady of Peace for the past five years and I have found my time here to be a very enjoyable and enriching experience. Our Lady of Peace was my first assign-ment after being ordained a priest and I feel very fortunate to have had the privilege to serve here. It is with considerable sadness that I am writing to let you know that I will be taking up a new assignment working in the Diocese of Oakland in the days after Easter.

After much prayer and reflection, I have decided that my voca-tion as a priest is within the diocesan priesthood and for this reason I have decided to leave the Institute of the Incarnate Word. Up until now I have been a member of the Institute in temporary vows and because of this I will not be taking my final vows in March.

I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation to all of the priests who have served at Our Lady of Peace with me. I would also like to express my deepest gratitude to all of you, the parishioners, who make Our Lady of Peace the parish and shrine that it is. In the past few years, I have made many good friends and acquaintances and I have many wonderful memories that will stay with me long after I leave Our Lady of Peace. From my first day here, I was made to feel very welcome and appreciated and this makes my goodbye all the harder to say. I want to ask you to please remember me in your prayers and I will remember all of you at a special Mass of thanksgiving in the weeks ahead. In Christ, Fr. Paul Coleman

The hope of praying this Breviary for the world which has urgent need of the spirit both of penance and prayer that the Divine Office abundantly supplies is available to all that are interested.

We are helping by raising money for their basic needs: clothing, three meals day, clean water, school supplies, as well as improvements to their shelter. These are all things that we take for granted, but for them, it does not come so easily. Our Catechism Program students are offering sacrifices and collecting donations for our mission. Parents are encouraged to help their children to give without counting the cost. There will be a contest between the classes to see who can bring in the most money.

The Children have already raised over $3,500!!!!!

Our Lady of Manaoag (Philippines) Tuesday, April 8, 2008, 8:00am Mass

Her origin as Patroness of Manaoag is surrounded with a myth as mystifying as the lovely expression of her face. Tradition has it that the town was born from the Virgin’s call. Thus the term “taoag” meaning “to call” was used to name the town. It is said that one day a young man walking home heard a lady’s mysterious voice. He looked around and with great awe saw the radiant lady with a rosary on her right hand and a child on her left standing on a cloud veiling a tree top. The man fell on his knees. He told the people of the appari-tion. Soon, right on the spot where the lady appeared, a

church was built. A town quickly flourished around it and was called ”Manaoag”. Today, her devotees come to her shrine throughout the year, but it is in April and May that they come in big numbers making Manaoag a true pilgrimage site. People from all walks of life and parts of the coun-try look to her either to thank her for favors received through her or to petition her once more for more favors or graces or simply to honor her.

Along the walls of her shrine, the more famous miracles attributed to her are depicted in giant wall paintings. One reveals the story of a sick child from Binmaley who died on the way to the Lady’s shrine. His dead body was nevertheless brought to the shrine before the feet of our lady and there it was brought back to life to the joy of her parents. “Virgin of Manaoag, Pray for Us.”

Today’s Gospel Jn 20:1-9 On the first day of the week, Mary of Mag-dala came to the tomb early in the morning, while it was still dark, and saw the stone removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and told them, “They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we don’t know where they put him.” So Peter and the other disciple went out and came to the tomb. They both ran, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and ar-rived at the tomb first; he bent down and saw the burial cloths there, but did not go in. When Simon Peter arrived after him, he went into the tomb and saw the burial cloths there, and the cloth that had covered his head, not with the burial cloths but rolled up in a separate place. Then the other disciple also went in, the one who had arrived at the tomb first, and he saw and believed. For they did not yet under-stand the Scripture that he had to rise from the dead.
