This conference is specifically designed for pediatricians, primary care physicians, physician extenders, nurses, and other health care professionals involved in the care of children. Emphasis has been placed on the day-to-day issues the pediatric provider encounters and challenging diagnostic or management dilemmas. Topics are based on current trends.

At the conclusion of the course, the participant should be able to:• Describe optimal infant feeding recommendations as defined by

the WHO, the US Surgeon General, US Public Health Service, CDC, and Medical and Health specialty societies, such as, the American Academy of Pediatrics.

• Develop strategies to overcome barriers to breastfeeding.• Illustrate differences between adult and pediatric palliative care and

examine barriers encountered when trying to access comprehensive pediatric palliative care and how to overcome them.

• Examine the essential components of a successful, integrated, trans-disciplinary pediatric team for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families.

• Illustrate how to reassure parents about the need for and safety of following the recommended vaccine schedule.

• Recognize risk factors for sudden cardiac death in pediatric patients.• Examine the most recent changes to the Pediatric and Adult

immunization schedules.• Illustrate recommendations for screening children for cardiac

conditions that are associated with sudden cardiac death and refer to a pediatric cardiologist as needed.

• Demonstrate the recommended protocol for screening newborns for critical congenital heart disease and establish a screening program for infants in the well-baby nursery.

• Illustrate the importance of family and personal history of cardiac disease that should prompt further cardiac evaluation and the indications to refer a child to a pediatric cardiologist for further evaluation before starting stimulant medications or allowing competitive sports.

• Explain the genetic and immune basis for “daycare” syndrome and the keys to the treatment plan for this condition.

• Illustrate the causes and current treatment options for urticaria, angioedema, atopic dermatitis, and medication rashes.

• Examine the latest recommendations in the care of asthma patients and explain how to implement them in practice.

• Recognize numerous disease entities affecting children through visual diagnosis, physical examination, and appropriate use of technology in an effort to reduce costs to patients.

• Employ information and recommendations from the latest edition of the Red Book concerning infectious diseases in children to improve patient outcomes.

• Illustrate the effects of iron deficiency and how to effectively counsel parents about proper iron nutrition.

• Examine the nature of monitoring the MMWR for public health information to improve his/her Pediatric practice and improve outcomes for children.

• Differentiate the diagnosis and management of both benign and serious dermatologic conditions in children.

• Demonstrate ability to accurately code patient encounters in a pediatric practice applying knowledge of new ICD10 codes.

In addition to newly renovated and expanded services in general pediatrics, critical care, and pediatric subspecialty care, Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children opened its emergency department in 2008. Attached by an over-the-street connector, Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies is a 285-bed facility providing comprehensive fetal diagnostic, obstetric, and neonatal services. Winnie Palmer Hospital is the busiest labor and delivery facility in the State of Florida.

The Florida State University College of Medicine’s mission is to educate and develop exemplary physicians who practice patient-centered health care, discover and advance knowledge, and are responsive to community needs, especially through service to elder, rural, minority, and underserved populations. FSU uses a distributive, community-based model in which students spend the first two years on the FSU campus in Tallahassee and complete the third and fourth years of clinical training at regional campuses around the state, with one of those sites being in Orlando.
