Since Pope Francis became Bishop of Rome two and a half years ago, he has inspired and captured the imaginations of believers and unbelievers alike. He has demonstrated such extraordinary humility in the way he lives life day to day that it rings true to address him as your Holiness. He has not only called upon us to be a church of the poor and for the poor, but has shown clearly by his own actions that he stands with those who live on the fringes of society. He has become a champion for immigrants and refugees even at the risk of criticism from nativists and bigots. His criticism of the kind of capitalism that fails to ensure the dignity of every individual—but especially of the poor—has comforted the afflicted while afflicting the comfortable. A few months ago, Francis announced that the Church would celebrate a Jubilee Year of Mercy beginning on Dec. 8

th and continuing through the Feast of Christ the

King in November 2016. His fondest hope is that this observance will make it more possible for the people of the world to see in the Church the very face of God’s infinite mercy. While I write these comments, the Pope is meeting with his brother bishops in the second Synod on the Family. It has been chiefly called to explore ways in which the church can advocate for and support marriage and family life that is rooted in the gospel of Jesus Christ. But the Pope has also challenged his brothers to explore with him, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, ways in which the church can come to the aid of people who need to experience the mercy of Christ because they are falling short of the glory of God. Who are we to judge? Do we not all fall short of God’s glory in one way or another? There are in today’s sometimes divided church, those who call for church authorities to lay down the law in the interest of what they call unswerving loyalty to The Truth. They claim to understand that even good people can experience a failure in marriage, while insisting that they may not marry again (without an annulment) except at the cost of refraining from receiving Holy Communion. They claim that finding a way to reconcile these individuals to the sacramental life is not an act of true mercy but a betrayal of the truth of unchangeable church doctrine. What do you make of this? What do you believe Jesus wants the Pope and the bishops to do in order to be faithful to him?

JOURNEY OF FAITH & ALPHA

WEDNESDAYS at 7PM

Begins with a Free Meal!

Christianity is not simply a set of moral rules and doctrinal teachings. It is The Way of Living that was modeled for us by Jesus Christ. He clearly taught that he was The Way, The Truth, and The Life. Thus we can only truly live the Christian life in union with Jesus and his Church.

ALPHA, which means beginning in Greek, introduces us to the person and mission of Jesus Christ in a way that helps us to develop or strengthen a connection with him that allows us to enjoy life in all its fullness and equips us to spread the Good News!

ALPHA & JOF are open to anyone interested in exploring what it really means to be a follower of Jesus.
