What a challenging thought! It asks me to reflect on how Marrara Christian College is helping our students to be such discerning people. I am a firm believer that the formation of discernment comes from the education that people get from a whole range of places. Children learn from parents, TV, social media AND school. It is important that we, as a school, do our bit. As a College, we are focused on educating the whole child. We are dedicated to helping them develop the critical thinking that is necessary for them to discern effectively. One of my favourite questions from students is “What is the point?” This is asking for a purpose for what we are learning; direction and a context for which this knowledge can be understood more fully. Questions move students to the place of learning for life and they develop their own ideas. As parents, can I encourage you to have conversations with your children? Conversations where they get to share what they are thinking, conversations where they can discuss the opinions that they have regarding a whole range of issues. Discuss the “Why” and encourage them to develop a discerning spirit. It is such a blessing to watch young people explore their world and make decisions that serve others and care for the world. It is amazing when they make decisions that show discernment and they create lovely lives full of honour and graciousness. Let us continue to work with them to build lives of discernment and truth.

“Education should form people capable of discernment who can discern “whatever is true, whatever is honourable, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious” - Philippians 4:8 (Burgis and Miller, 2018).

Primary Austswim Lessons

Years 1-6 have just spent two weeks participating in swimming lessons at Casuarina Pool. From learning how to blow bubbles to the finer details of stroke formation, each student enjoyed the time spent in the water. Besides improving on their swimming skills, they learnt the three important rules of the Aqua Code:

1. Only swim with an adult

2. Stay afloat and wave when in trouble

3. Reach to rescue

Feedback from students was very positive, with our students returning with smiles and exclamations over what they had learnt in their lessons!

2019 marks a significant milestone for Marrara Christian College.

This is set to be a wonderful dry season evening under the stars. The evening will include a chance to gather our past and present community, taking trips down

memory lane and opportunities to sow into the future of the College.

College NewsJemima Fernandes recently represented the NT at the 24th Annual National

Schools Constitutional Convention, held in Canberra last week.

The topic for 2019 was, “A new constitutional preamble for Australia”, and involved

like-minded students from all around the country exploring the Australian

constitution, whilst understanding Australia’s social and political position in the

world.

Highlights from the convention included meeting political leaders, learning about

international policies from foreign ambassadors, and a dinner at the High Court

of Australia.

Jemima says, “It was an excellent opportunity to focus on our Australian heritage,

as well as understanding that many young Australians are keen to have a say in

their democracy!”

Well done, Jemima!
