AG STUDENTS ATTEND THE MENDOORAN ANNUAL FIELD DAY!
Mr Burke, Steven Leask, Robert Austin, Jamie Sharpe, Brad Ward, John
Monk, Amelia Washbrook and Tiarney Crothers at “Boxwood”.
“We all had a great day and it was very educational”
On Wednesday 23rd October Years 9 and 10 Ag students attended the
Annual Mendooran Field Day. The day started at “Boxwood” where
Charlie Knight and guest speakers discussed the benefits of growing
canola. They discussed varieties grown, windrowing and harvesting.
They progressed to Murray Skinner’s property, “Warrambool” where they
viewed trials of pastures, oats and forage brassica and the students mixed
with the large turn out of local farmers. They ended the day at Rob
Monk’s property, “Wattle Grove” where Rob has grown brassica and the
students had the chance to mix with the local farming community. The
students thoroughly enjoyed the day and their teacher, Mr Burke, plans to
take them back as an annual excursion. It was a day where the
community visibly supported the school and it was a great success for all
concerned!

PRINCIPAL’S NOTES
School Photos
As mentioned previously, our school photos will be on Tuesday 6th November.
I have been extremely impressed with the improvement in uniform this year
and would like to ensure that the whole school student body is looking its best
next Tuesday. Please ensure that your children are wearing full and tidy school
uniform that is well presented.
Focus on Reading
Today Primary staff and Mrs Young will be involved in one of the final stages in our Focus on Reading
professional learning. This has been a very successful program for staff professional development. We
often attend or are presented with professional learning that is either interesting or obvious and already
in place in our classrooms, however, this program has for the past two years empowered our teachers to
have different and more effective strategies to actually improve teaching and
learning in our classrooms. I would like to thank all staff for their
participation and striving to improve student outcomes. Special thanks go to
Mrs Reynolds for showing outstanding skills in supporting staff whilst
coordinating the program.
Absenteeism
Our Home School Liaison Officers (HSLO) have indicated to me that they
have downloaded information from our system to ascertain who our students
are with high absenteeism. These particular students will be monitored in
the future to ensure that this pattern improves. Families need to remember
their legal, and I believe moral obligations these days of ensuring that their
children attend school each day possible. I would also like to remind
students and families that every absence should be followed up with a note
from home explaining the reason for the absence.

KINDERGARTEN/YEAR 1 NEWS Last week students visited Healthy Harold to talk about how we can make healthy choices. Students
discussed healthy foods and sometimes foods, staying fit through exercise and we talked about people in
our community who help us stay healthy. Harold popped out to say hello although at times he was
distracted by a banana that he found beside his house. It was a great visit.
This week we will be reading about aeroplanes. Students will be reading interesting information and
then planning and writing an information report. We will be making our own spinning helicopters using
cardboard and a paperclip.

FOCUS ON READING Today the Primary teachers and Mrs Young participated in a Focus on Reading Professional
Development day. This program has been running over two years and has provided our teachers with the
opportunity to work cooperatively to extend and refine teaching and learning practices in the area of
teaching reading and comprehension skills. This program is developing our ability to implement a
variety of teaching strategies and access resources to develop student’s knowledge and understanding of
how they can select strategies such as making connections, predicting, visualising, summarising,
monitoring, and questioning to gain a deep understanding of the messages represented within a variety
of texts.

MENDOORAN SWIMMING FOR SPORT PROGRAM The Mendooran Swimming for Sport Program will begin on Friday 16th November.
Supporting the development of students swimming skills is an important goal for our school as the
summer season starts. This year we are trialling a new program that involves visiting the pool on
Fridays for a session rather than ten days intensive swimming due to disruptions in previous years.
From Week 6 on Friday’s, class groups will get changed into swimmers at school and walk to the pool
during their sport time and participate in levelled swimming activities, returning to school with their
teachers after the session. Students will need to wear their sports uniform to school and bring in a
swimming bag with swimmers, towel, hat and sunscreen.

YEARS 2/3/4/5 NEWS This week in COGS we will continue our research about products that are useful eg: for humans,
animals or the environment. The children will begin to put their ideas onto paper and then make
prototypes from clay. Then we will begin to make the products we will display later in the term. If
you could send in any recyclable items, such as cardboard rolls, plastic soft drink containers, ice
cream containers and lids etc. it would be appreciated.
Our vegetables were invaded by army grubs last Thursday, so we set to work watering extra seasol
and smothering the plants in wood ashes-the army grubs soon marched off our garden
and none were to be seen on Friday! The students are learning that Organic control is
possible to control unwanted bugs.
If you are able to donate seeds for our stall in a few weeks it would be much
appreciated. The profit made will go to a charity of the students’ choice. Large
seeds like; Pumpkin, butternut pumpkin, watermelon and zucchini would be
great! We will also be looking for lemons for our lemonade stall.
This week we host the assembly on Wednesday at 2.40pm in our room.
Come along to watch our skeleton dance!
Our spelling is getting more challenging and it is pleasing to see that there have been
great improvements in most students’ results. This is reflected by the large amount of homework
handed in last week! Well done!!
In Mathematics we continue to concentrate on subtraction without trading (Year 2) and subtraction
with trading (Years 3 and 4). I have been a little tricky mixing up the subtraction and addition
problems so that the students need to pay close attention to the operation signs!
Have a great week!

SECONDARY NEWS GENERAL This Thursday our Year 10 students will be travelling to Peak Hill for a Western Access Program
orientation day. This day involves the students meeting with prospective teachers and learning how
to use the VC equipment and also to meet other students from ACCESS schools. The students will be
supervised by Mr Bearman. We still require further transport. Please contact the office if you can
provide transport.
Our new sewing machines and overlockers have arrived and the old machines will be put up for
tender later in the term.
Year 7 & 8 students have the opportunity to take part in the Land CWA Cookery competition this
Wednesday morning. Mrs Henderson will be in to judge the two categories at 11.30. We thank our
local CWA for providing this opportunity for our students.
The HSC continues with Blake sitting his Physics examination on Friday morning. We all wish him
good luck.

THE CHAPLAIN Father Robert Bowman started as Mendooran School Welfare
Chaplain this term. He is in the school Monday’s and Tuesday’s
each week in fourth term. Last year Mendooran Central School
applied for funding under the Commonwealth Chaplaincy and
Student Welfare Scheme for a School welfare Chaplain. The role
involves being part of the student welfare team in the school and is
also a community chaplain for students, teachers and parents and
carers. The chaplain listens and is impartial. He doesn’t take sides
and he doesn’t give advice and is not involved in discipline matters
except to listen to concerns. Fr Robert will often refer people to
those who are more able to help within or outside the school. He is
also available to help the school as an extra adult on excursions,
class activities and visits classes regularly to join in on class
activities. Please feel free to contact the school if you wish to see
Fr Robert Bowman.
Fr Robert said, “I have been very warmly welcomed into the school environment and the students
and staff are adapting to my presence and wacky style of humour. We are working well together to
build the role of the Student Welfare Chaplain for the benefit of all involved with the school.”
HSC - HALF WAY THROUGH!! Mrs Waters with Tammi Hellegers and Blake Washbrook discussing the finer details of Design and
Technology the afternoon following their second English paper.
Maths and English as well as Electrotechnology and Hospitality are completed and Physics, CAFS,
Metals and Engineering and D&T are still to be completed. I have been very impressed with both
students’ prior preparation for each subject and we wish them well in their final exams.

MENDOORAN PONY CLUB A big thank you to everyone that helped with the clearing sale on Saturday. Well done and thank you
to Louise for organising it.
On Sunday Victoria, Anna, Kerrie, Brad and Lachie attended the Dubbo Gymkhana where they all
had a fantastic day and went home with plenty of ribbons.
Belle, Georgia and Sam attended the Quirindi One Day Event and had a
fantastic time. Belle on Charlie Brown did her first D grade One Day Event,
Georgia on Ben did D grade and Sam on Gus did her first B grade event. Big
Gus did love the cross country and they got around clear in exactly optimum
time. Sam came 5th and Georgia and Belle were very close to the placings
coming in at 6th and 8th.
There are 2 more One Day Events for the year that I know of - Mudgee are
holding theirs at Geurie on 17th and 18th November and Coonabarabran is 8th
and 9th December.
We will be catering for a bull sale at “Caigan” on the 8th November – anyone
who can help would be greatly appreciated.
Our next meeting will be our AGM held at the Royal Hotel on Tuesday 13th
November at 7:30. All are welcome to attend.
