Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Eulalia Parish

“Everyone who acknowledges me before others, the Son of Man will acknowledge before the angels of God” (Lk12:8). Jesus encourages all of us to confess Him before the whole world. Not only that, he promises us some-thing even greater, that we will be with him before the angels of God on that Great Day. Being with God is our ultimate goal in life. As disciples of Jesus, we, parishioners of St. Eulalia Parish, certainly, put our faith in Him and pray that our God is with us--Immanuel.

After many prayers and conversations with my brother priests to explore the opportunities of welcoming people back to church, I felt a little bit relieved because I know that I am not alone in this situation! Most Catholics have the same concerns. Will people return? Why would they come back? My answer

is a positive YES. “Stay with me, do not be afraid” (1Sam 22:23), the Lord extends the invitation and assures us with these comforting words.

Ignatius of Antioch, bishop and martyr of the Church which we celebrate on Saturday, has these great words to offer as we strive to live out our faith during this Pandemic, and to look beyond that. In his Epistle to Ephesians, he writes: Take heed often to come together to give thanks to God and show for His praise. For when you assemble frequently in the same place, the powers of Satan are destroyed, and the destruction at which he aims is prevented by the unity of your faith. During the time of darkness, Ignatius encouraged his fellow Christians to be together to pray, to worship, and to fight against the devil.

Many of us have been separated from our church for some months already. Though we strive to pray and to participate in the Eucharist celebration via TV, computer, iPhone, or IPad at home, it is actually not the norm of the church. Once again, Ignatius writes this in his letter to the Philadelphians: Be careful, therefore, to take part only in the one Eucharist; for there is only one Flesh of our Lord Jesus Christ and one Cup to unite us with His Blood.

Friends, the Eucharist is the center of our lives. We all long for a deeper relationship with God as Saint Teresa of Jesus longed for. Let us pray together Prayer of St. Teresa:

Let nothing disturb you; Let nothing frighten you. All things are passing.

God never changes. Patience obtains all things. Nothing is wanting to him

Who possesses God. God long suffices.

    God bless, Fr. John Chen

E St. Paul writes of his gratitude for the community at Thessalonica in the second reading today. He offers a prayer of thanksgiving for them remembering their works of faith and labors of love. His words of encour-agement kept the community engaged in the work of promoting the faith and strengthening their bond of love for one another. Who in your community of faith needs words of encouragement? Will you, like St. Paul, take some time to write a note of encouragement or offer a prayer of thanksgiving for those striving to grow in faith? It may be just what this person needed!

  • Let Your Voice Be Heard – Again “Say No to ROE” The state legislature has extended the session until January 5th, 2021. Please re-mind the members of the Joint Committee on Judiciary that you oppose the ex-pansion of abortion in Massachusetts. Please call the Committee at 617-722-2396 and let them know you are opposed to H3320 and S1209 – the ROE legis-lation. Every telephone call helps! Remember these bills would remove:

The requirement that young girls obtain consent before an abortion The requirement that efforts be made to save a living baby who survives abortion The requirement that late term abortions be performed in hospitals And the bills would allow abortion on demand for all nine months of pregnancy.

For more information about how the ROE legislation would expand abortion in Massachusetts visit www.macatholic.org Thank you!

The Lord is king over all the earth, as we sing in today's Psalm. Governments rise and fall by His permission, with no authority but that given from above (see John 19:11; Romans 13:1).

In effect, God says to every ruler what he tells King Cyrus in today's First Reading: "I have called you . . . though you knew me not." The Lord raised up Cyrus to restore the Israelites from exile, and to rebuild Jerusalem (see Ezra 1:1-4). Throughout salvation history, God has used foreign rulers for the sake of His chosen people. Pharaoh's heart was hardened to reveal God's power (see Romans 9:17). Invading armies were used to punish Israel's sins (see 2 Maccabees 6:7-16). The Roman occupation during Jesus' time was, in a similar way, a judgment on Israel's unfaithfulness. Jesus' famous words in today's Gospel: "Repay to Caesar" are a pointed reminder of this. And they call us, too, to keep our allegiances straight. The Lord alone is our king. His kingdom is not of this world (see John 18:36) but it begins here in His Church, which tells of His glory among all peoples. Citizens of heaven (see Philippians 3:20), we are called to be a light to the world (see Matthew 5:14) - working in faith, laboring in love, and enduring in hope, as to-day's Epistle counsels. We owe the government a concern for the common good, and obedience to laws - unless they conflict with God's commandments as interpreted by the Church (see Acts 5:29). But we owe God everything. The coin bears Caesar's image. But we bear God's own image (see Genesis 1:27). We owe Him our very lives - all our heart, mind, soul, and strength, offered as a living sacrifice of love (see Romans 12:1-2). We should pray for our leaders, that like Cyrus they do God's will (see 1 Timothy 2:1-2) - until from the ris-ing of the sun to its setting, all humanity knows that Jesus is Lord. • Years ago, Dr. Richard Carlson wrote a book called “Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff, and Its All Small Stuff.” The book was a best-seller, guiding individuals to not fret over the smaller issues of life and the things causing wor-ry. Given today’s climate of the pandemic and all the associated issues it has caused in our lives, you might ar-gue there is no “small stuff” anymore, or at least we are not paying so much attention to it. But is that really the case?

The overbearing cloud of the pandemic has cast a shadow on much of our lives, and it is essential to try and rec-ognize places where the sun still shines. If we remain in the shadow, everything can seem a little darker, cooler, and more foreboding. One way in which this is manifest is how we can start to “sweat the small stuff” and begin to become more engulfed in thoughts and patterns which create even more pressure on our lives. These worries affect our mental and spiritual state if we are not careful to control it.

St. John Cassian, one of the first Desert Fathers from the 3rd century, understood this experience. He knew that if we dwelt on a negative thought, it would grow and build into something bigger, perhaps a desire, and eventu-ally grow into something that started to affect our whole disposition (and not in a good way!). This finding was long before any modern psychological discoveries about the “behavioral psychology” from more recent centu-ries.

We “sweat the small stuff”, when we wish the person would move more quickly from the traffic light (after all, it has been green for at least 15 seconds!), or “don’t get so close to me” in the supermarket. Do we keep notic-ing how others are not doing their duty? When we do, of course, we become activated, frustrated, and irritated. Eventually, this building up of all the “small stuff” causes us to change our disposition towards others, and thereby Jesus himself. Scripture reminds us continually in this regard.

There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. Galatians 3:28

So “sweating the small stuff” does immeasurable damage to us, when many are already at a heightened state of anxiety. Cassian’s recommendation was simple. Notice your thoughts! When you feel yourself becoming an-noyed with another and elevating your blood pressure, then recognize that thought for what it is. A building block for further displeasure with others and a movement towards losing whatever “inner peace” you have. The inner peace that only comes from our Lord is the only solution to what we are experiencing during this pandem-

ic. This is grace, and we need it more than ever!

When faced with the irrita-tions and the small stuff during this coming week, recognize them for what they are and bring them to the Lord. You may be sur-prised at the results from this simple process. John Cassian learned these les-sons 1,700 years ago; we are well reminded by his example today. Cassian invites us to stop, reflect, and surround these thoughts with the love of God within us. It’s a sur-prisingly powerful formula.
