Inafastchangingworld,21stcenturyESL/EFLteachersmustdevelopanacuteawarenessofthecriticalneedtoconsiderstudents’interestsandrealitieswhendevelopingmaterials.Moreover,experiencehasshownthatstudents’levelofenthusiasmandamazementisraisedwhenmaterialsoflocalrelevanceareusedinclass.Inthisworkshop,thepresenterwilldefineanddescribeauthenticmaterials.Shewillalsooutlinebenefitsandchallengesassociatedwithusingthem.Then,shewilloffersuggestionsforselectingandfindinglocallyrelevantauthenticmaterials,andforplanningactivitiesappropriateforusewiththesematerials.Criteriaofselectingauthenticmaterialswillbeanalyzed.Varioustypesofauthenticmaterialswillbeexplored.Advantagesanddisadvantageswillbecompared.Finally,theworkshopwillendwitharangeofpracticalactivitiestogivetheparticipantstheopportunitytopracticewhattheymightliketodointheirteachingcontexts.
