—–——— Safeguard The Children ——–—— The establishment of the Office of Safeguard the Children in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and the formation of Safeguard the Children Parish Committees in the par-ishes were mandated by Cardinal Roger Mahoney in 2002. The Office of Safeguard the Children assists these permanent Parish Committees in implementing child sex-ual abuse prevention education, Safe Environment poli-cies, procedures and resources.

Click on http://www.archdiocese.la/protecting/ for more information.

All volunteers working with or around children must be fingerprinted through the Archdiocese and certified in the Safeguard the Children Program Protecting God’s Chil-dren. Information for both fingerprinting and Safeguard Classes are listed below. The Virtus training must be updated every 4 years. However, instead of the 3-hour Protecting God's Children program, people can recertify by completing the 1.5 hour Keeping the Promise Alive program. Fingerprinting does not need to be repeated.”

———————Did You Know?—————-—-

Road to priesthood involves a rigorous formation process

Seminary formation involves much more than academic study. Prior to ordination, a candidate for priesthood goes through a lengthy evaluation period, including an intern-ship during which he lives in a rectory and works with priests, staff and parishioners. During this time, the candi-date is judged as to his suitability to be a priest. No one is ordained unless the staff of St. John’s Seminary, includ-ing the lay faculty and formation advisers, concludes that the candidate has attained an emotional, psychological and sexual maturity appropriate for his age and for the celibate life of a priest. For more information, please visit www.la-archdiocese.org and click on the “Vocations” tab. For more information, please call the Archdiocesan Safeguard the Children office: (213) 637-7227.

————-Secular Franciscan Order——–—--

St. Francis established the Order of Brothers and Sisters of Penance, now the Secular Franciscan Order (SFO), for those men and women, single or married, who were unable to leave their families and occupations, but still wanted to be affiliated with St. Francis and a religious life. The SFO is a recognized order within the Catholic Church, not a club or organization. Secular Franciscans are men and women who answer the call to follow Christ more deeply through the spirituality of St. Francis of Assisi. It all begins with a nudge from the Holy Spirit! We meet the third Sunday of every month from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. We share in prayer, discussions of spiritual and secular material and fellowship. We also work on individ-ual and group service projects. We meet at Our Lady of the Assumption Church in the Parish Center and welcome visitors to any of our gatherings!

Our next gathering will take place on March 18th

For questions or more information please contact; Pauline Riendeau at (805) 339-9446

————— Hermits of St. Giles —————— Greetings to You, There are times in our life where we truly experience liv-ing in a spiritual desert. There are feelings of emptiness, loneliness and darkness. It is during this time where we must cling to faith in Christ and keep our eyes firmly fixed upon Him. He alone will guide us out of this desert. We will feel as if we were sinking into the sea like St. Peter, but with his hand firmly in the Lord's hand he was kept from sinking into the deep. We will experience this same response from our loving God. Pray, hope and don't worry all will be provided for when we rest our heart in Christ. Have a most blessed week. Your brother, Mark Dextraze, Hermits of St. Giles

Bro. Mark Dextraze, Hermits of St. Giles, 647-9089 hermitsofstgiles.org The Hermits of St. Giles is a lay association of disabled men and women who are homebound because of chronic illness and disability. Their ministry to the church is to offer their sufferings for all through prayer.

A Message from Father Steve

My Friends, I hope this Lent is a time for spiritual renewal and reflection. Lent is a time of the year where we devote ourselves to prayer, fasting and almsgiving. I hope you are taking advantage reading the Lenten re-flection books handed out on Ash Wednesday. These daily reflections help us to focus on the treasures of our Catholic faith. I pray you take advantage of the University Courses that are being offered here at OLA and at the various other parishes. I would like to invite and encourage everyone to spend some quiet time before our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament at St. Julies Chapel. We have 24 hour Adoration beginning Wednesday evening thru Sunday Morning. The personal time you spend before our Lord in the Blessed Sac-rament will change the way you pray and see the world. Our Lord Jesus is waiting for all of us to spend a few moments in His loving presence.

I wish to thank our outgoing Pastoral Council for their 3 years of service and dedication to our parish. Their wisdom and advice has been a special blessing to me. It has been a privilege to work alongside wonderful and faith filled people. I am excited about our newly elected members of our Pastoral Council and I am look-ing forward to working with them. They will be introduced to the Parish very soon. Please pray for them. Once again, thank you making OLA a family of faith and love where everyone is welcome. I would like everyone to continue to reach out and welcome all who walk through the doors of our Church and make them feel welcome. God Bless you all. Love, Father Steve
