• Annual in Va• USDA zone – 8-11• Part-shade to full sun

– Brighter purple color in stronger sun

• Height: 6-12”, spread 24-36”• Purple foliage – long grass-like leaves• Pink or purple flowers Mid summer to Fall• Cut back to encourage bushiness• Uses: bedding plant, containers, hanging basket

Pesticide

• A chemical used to control or kill pests

• Three main types:– Insecticides– Herbicides– Fungicides

• Also repellants – particularly deer, rabbit, pets

Pesticide Safety Law

• Agricultural employers must assure that untrained workers receive basic pesticide safety information before they enter a treated area on the establishment. No more than 5 days after their initial employment has commenced, all untrained agricultural workers must receive the complete WPS pesticide safety training

Employees

Handlers

• Mix, load or apply pesticides

• Clean or repair pesticide equipment

• Serve as IPM scouts

• May also be workers

Workers

• Perform tasks such as cultivation and harvesting of plants

• May also be handlers (if they have had training)

Different standards apply to the different types of employees

Re-entry Interval (REI)

• After using a commercial pesticide, you must not allow any reentry into the greenhouse or sprayed outdoor area for the minimum specified time.

• The area must be clearly marked as restricted and the time the restriction is to be lifted.
