WRITING TIPS

1. INFORMAL LETTERS

Informal letters are also known as social or friendly letters. They are usually written to friends, relatives or members of the family.

Guidelines1. Informal letters are casual in nature. The languages used should be simple and direct. 2. Even though the letters are written in an easy conversational style, you must remember to

use good and grammatically correct English. 3. All the notes given should be elaborated and arranged in proper paragraphs. 4. An informal letter has the following part:-

The writer’s address The date The greeting/salutation The contents The subscription The conclusion The signature 4.1. The writer’s address is written at the top right-hand corner of the letter. Take note of

the commas. There is a full stop at the end of the address. The postcode should be included.

4.2. The date is written below the address. 4.3. The greeting/salutation is written at the left-hand side of the letter. Use a comma

after the greeting. The greeting depends on how well you know the person to whom you are writing. For example:

* If you are writing to a friend, you may use; Dear Faridah, Dear Hayati, etc. * To someone closer to you, you may use: My dearest Mom, Dear aunt , Dear Ros, etc.

4.4. The contents begin on the line below the greeting. Start slightly away from the margin. It should consist of three parts:

* The introduction is the first paragraph. It deals with information such as: When you received the letter what you are sorry or happy about. * The body of the letter contains matters which you wish to enquire about or inform the person. Use informal language – a friendly, conversational style.

4.5. The conclusion * The conclusion is the last paragraph. It usually contains wishes, regards or a reminder

4.6. The subscription is written below the body, at the right-hand side of the letter. Put a

comma after it. The first word starts with a capital letter. * When writing to a friend, use “Yours sincerely, Your loving friend, etc.” * When writing to someone closer, use , “Yours affectionately, Your affectionate daughter, etc.”

4.7. The signature appears below the subscription.

You received a letter from Ikram, your former classmate. In his letter, he asked you to: tell him how you spent your last term holidays give him some hints on how to take care of his new bicycle tell him about your new house and neighbours any interesting news

When writing your letter to Ikram: use all the notes given elaborate on the given notes to make it more interesting make sure it is not less than 120 words

SUGGESTED ANSWER                                                   1609, Jalan Samar,                                                   Taman Megah,                                                 45000 Kuala Selangor,                                                  Selangor Darul Ehsan                                                  2 January 2012. Dear Ikram,

Thank you for your letter which I received yesterday. I am glad to hear that you and your family are getting on well. My family and I are fine, too.      During the holidays, I had a wonderful time at my uncle’s house in Kuala Kangsar. It was durian season and hundreds of ripe durians dropped from the durian trees in his orchard every day. My cousins and I worked hand-in-hand to collect and put the thorny fruits in big baskets. Later in the day, we sold the durians at the stall in front of my uncle’s house.  Many people came to buy the durians and I found it very exciting as it was my first experience selling durians by the roadside.      Well, in your letter, you told me that your parents finally bought you a bicycle. Taking care of a bicycle is not as difficult as you have thought. You should lubricate all the moving parts often and check the chain and the tyres regularly. You must also wash and polish the bicycle often to make it look new. Dry it so that it will not easily get rusty. However, if you are still not sure of how to take care of your bicycle, do not hesitate to call me.  Do you still have my telephone number?      Regarding my new house, it is a single-storey terrace house with four bedrooms.  Although it has four bedrooms, I still find it a bit small. However, it is comfortable to live in. My new house is near to the shops and bus-stop. My neighbours are friendly and helpful. We also trust one another that whenever we go out of town, they help us look after the house – we leave our keys with them too!      Oh yes, by the way, do you remember Hemanathan, our class monitor? His family has migrated to New Zealand. He sends his best regards to you. He says he will be sending us each a souvenir from there.       That’s all for the time being. Do come over to my house when you have the time. Please convey my warmest regards to your family. Bye and happy cycling!

Yours sincerely,                                                  Kamarul

Lot 1209, Taman Yang Ming,                                                  52000 Kuala Lumpur.                                                  10 January 2012.

Dear Zakiah,

I’m so sorry to hear about your misfortune. Are you still suffering from the shock? However, I am relieved because you were not injured in the incident.        I hope you would be more careful next time and as to prevent the incident from happening again, I hope you will consider the suggestions below.

Walking against the traffic flow is one way to avoid snatch theft. By walking against the traffic flow, you can see the upcoming vehicles. It would be difficult for people to snatch your belongings.

You should always wear your bag across your body. It is advisable not to hold your valuable belongings in your hands. Holding valuable belongings in your hands will attract snatch thieves.

Always remember that your handbag or sling bag would be the main target of the snatch thieves. Therefore, it is safer for you to keep your cash and identity card in your pockets.  This is one reason why I prefer to wear long pants when I go outing as it is easy for me to keep my cash and identity card in my pockets.

By the way, did you manage to take down the details of your assailants? It would be helpful if you could identify the snatcher’s vehicle and its registration number in order to lodge a police report.

I hope that the incident would not happen again. It’s all right if you cannot make it to my house this weekend. We could still see each other some other time. Till we meet again!

Your friend,                                                       Nurul Nadiah

A Trip to the Firefly Resort

The English Language Society recently organised a trip to a historical site in Kuala Selangor. The objectives of the trip were to help members learn more about the history of Malawati Hill and to foster better ties among club members.

Forty-two members went on the trip under the guidance of the other English Language Society advisor, Puan Rynee Damak, and the Senior Assistant, Puan Ezana Putera . The trip was on 1 March 2012. We traveled by bus and departed from the school at 7.00 a.m. We had breakfast at the most popular restaurant in Kuala Selangor town at about 8.00 a.m. After taking our breakfast, we headed straight to Malawati Hill which is a well-known historical site.

We were very amazed with the sceneries watched from the hill top. The Straits of Malacca could be seen from there. Then, we had the opportunity to witness old cannons, Royal Mausoleum and the Seven Wells. The participants had to write their own reports on what they had seen. Some even snapped photos for remembrance.

Page 24: 3 PMR WRITING & SUMMARY MODULES 2012.docx

Later we checked into the chalets which were located not far from the Malawati Hill. We spent most of the night talking about the hill and did not even realised when we fell asleep.  We departed for home early the next morning. The trip was a success and we had achieved the objectives of the trip.

SAMPLE 1Your English teacher had assigned your class to write a recount of your personal experience. After few days of thinking, you have decided to write about an experience when you were 7 years old. You had prepared the following notes to help you write the recount:-- 2002 – 7 years old- people turned their back on me- grandmother did not want me- family did not hug, kiss me- angry- mother died- friends teasing- nobody to play with- people call me “drug addict’s daughter- nurse Rina took care - other family members –disgusted – AIDS

SAMPLE ANSWER

In the year 2002, I was only seven years old and yet I was puzzled with what was happening around me. I used to wonder why people were turning their back on me. My grandmother too did not want to take care of me. Even my aunts and uncles, Pak Ngah and Mak Long did not even want to look at me. None of my relatives would hug and kiss me. All these made me wonder and I kept on asking myself, “Why? Why me?”      I was angry with Mum who had left me. What was wrong with Mum ? All I could remember vividly is the way she looked at me blankly. She did not say a word but I could sensed that Mum was very ill at that time. Not long after that, she was gone, forever. I could still remember, one of the nurses told me that my mother had left for a better place and she had left me for good.      Life then became miserable. Children of my age would tease me and called me names. They even refused to play with me and that made me feel very lonely and not needed. Till now, I could still feel the pain on hearing people calling out, “Her father is a drug addict, Her father is a drug addict. Don’t be her friend, Don’t be her friend!”.      At such a tender age, I was so naïve. “What is a drug addict?”, I wondered. Nurse Rina who pitied me was the only soul on this earth who took great care of me and whom I called “Umi”. With Umi beside me, I became a more confident person. However, the rest of Umi’s family did not even want to be near me. They looked at me with disgust. Once, Abang Najeeb said, “ Go away! Don’t come near me. I don’t want to catch your AIDS!”.       “What’s AIDS?”, I wondered. Now, after eight years, I know who I am and why people avoid me all these years. My days are numbered…………….

SAMPLE ANSWEROnce there was a very fat boy named Raymond. He was fifteen years old but he was so

huge that people thought he was twenty.Raymond loved eating chocolates, chips, cheese, cakes and drinking soft drinks. Eating

all those junk food made Raymond’s body as big as an elephant. His favourite soft drink was “Cola-Cool” and could hardly stop himself from drinking it all the time. Eating too much junk food and drinking soft drinks made Raymond lazy. Besides that, he also enjoyed playing video games and this made him even lazier. He began to ignore his studies as he was always unenergetic.

Raymond also spent most of his pocket money on snacks and junk food. Raymond even ate chocolates after having his dinner. After dinner he would go to his room and watched television while eating his chips. He would then go to bed at about 2.00 a.m. and was always late for school. As he got up, he would start eating his chips and junk food. Due to his bad eating habit, he became obese.

Mrs Lim who is Raymond’s mother, always advised him to exercise. However, Raymond refused to listen to her advice. He was so stubborn and never wanted to exercise. As a result, he became fatter and fatter and his health was deteriorating. He too could not walk or move about too much. The doctor had diagnosed him with heart failure and might not be able to survive long. Upon hearing the doctor’s report, Raymond became sad and he regretted for not listening to his mother’s advice. Then only Raymond remembered a proverb, “ An apple a day, keeps the doctor away”. However, it was already too late for Raymond.

SUGGESTED ANSWER

It was the school holidays. I was feeling bored. I had finished doing my homework and there was nothing else I could do. There wasn’t any interesting programme on the television either. As I was thinking how I should spend my day, an idea flashed across my mind.

“Ha! Fry an omelette!,” I told myself.      As I was frying the egg, the telephone rang. I abandoned my cooking and I ran out of the kitchen to answer the call. It was from my bestfriend, Siti Hawa. Siti Hawa and I soon chatted with each other over the phone happily. Meanwhile, the omelette was still cooking. In my hurry to answer the phone, I had forgotten to turn off the stove. I was so engrossed talking to Siti Hawa that I totally forgot about the omelette!

Soon a burning smell began to fill the air. The smell was so strong that my brother, Shidee, came out of his room to take a look. He located the smell to the kitchen. By then, a small fire had formed. Shidee quickly filled a pail with water and doused the fire immediately.

I was stunned! I was standing near my brother, not knowing what to do. Shidee then turned to me and said, “You were too careless. Do you know it’s very dangerous to leave your cooking unattended? Luckily I was at home, or else the whole house would be burnt.”

I did not utter a single word and head hung low in shame, regretting my carelessness.  I apologised to my brother and promised him that I would never repeat the silly mistake.

The Importance of Dental Carebyy: Jerina Khor

The only bones in our body that are not covered with flesh are our teeth. Teeth can be seen when we smile, laugh, grin. Teeth are important as they play a vital role in helping us to enjoy our food. Therefore, we should treat them with care.

To prevent our teeth from rotting, we have to observe and follow some guidelines. Eating too much of food that contain a lot of sugar may cause your teeth to rot. This is also one of the reasons why people have bad teeth. The acid in sweet food attacks our teeth and gums, resulting in toothaches. Hence, we should keep away from foodstuff such as sweets, snacks, chocolates and soft drinks as they contain high amounts of sugar.

Brushing our teeth properly and regularly is another rule of dental care. By doing this, germs have less chances to spoil our teeth, thus preventing pain in the gums. It is recommended that we brush our teeth in the morning, at night and after meal to ensure a clean, sparkling set of teeth. Regular check-ups with the dentist should also be done.

Small children should be trained from young to brush their own teeth. This means, parents are responsible in training these young children to brush their teeth. Pregnant women must also give attention to their own oral hygiene. They should eat food that encourages the growth of strong teeth such as dairy products and fruits to ensure that their babies have strong teeth.

In conclusion, dental care is very important in ensuring healthy teeth and gums.

Page 45: 3 PMR WRITING & SUMMARY MODULES 2012.docx

make driving test difficult to pass impose speed limits raise the age of holding a driving licence to 21 impose heavy fines on those caught speeding suspension of licence for speeding

When writing the speech: use the correct format use all the notes given elaborate on the given notes to make it more interesting make sure it is not less than 120 words

SAMPLE ANSWER

Good morning to the principal, teachers and fellow friends. I am very grateful to be given the opportunity to deliver a speech today on “Stricter Laws Are Necessary To Prevent Accidents”.

The number of people obtaining a driving licence increases from day to day and this is a proof that the driving test is rather too easy. Therefore, to prevent accidents, we must firstly make driving test difficult to pass. This can be done by changing or revising the format of the test. Besides, we should also impose speed limits. For example, if we are driving near a school area, we must drive at only 60 km/ph. This is to ensure the safety of school children who use the road.

Apart from that, we should also raise the age of holding a driving licence to 21 years old. Those below 21 years old should not be allowed to sit for a driving test and definitely would not be getting a licence before they reach 21. In addition, we must also impose heavy fines on those who are caught speeding. Speeding and reckless driving contribute to the increase of death toll in accidents.

Suspending the licence of a driver who is caught speeding, is also practical in preventing accidents. The suspension of a driver’s licence will help to stop people from speeding and be more careful when driving on the road. Finally, a special course should be made compulsory for teenage drivers immediately after passing a driving test. Stern action should be taken should anyone fail to attend this course.

In conclusion, all the measures above should be implemented in order to prevent accidents. As a saying goes, “Prevention is better than cure”. Thank you.

The English Language Club of your school is planning an activity in conjunction with the

English Language campaign in your school. There are two proposals to organize an inter-clss

storytelling competition or to put up a variety show. Which of the two proposals would you

suggest to the club? Use the points given below to write out your composition.

Inter-class storytelling A variety show

Only one type of activity – storytelling

Only one repsentative per class will take part

Easier to organize

Need to appoint judges and buy prizes for

participants and souvenirs for judges.

A variety show

More people can take part

Needs time and money to organize but tickets

can be sold.

An opportunity for more students with talents

to develop their potential.

Answer

Page 50: 3 PMR WRITING & SUMMARY MODULES 2012.docx

I think it would be better to organize a variety show. This is one activity that would

involve more people. We should encourage maximum participation because the objective of the

campaign is to upgrade the standard of English in the school. Besides, people from different

classes and levels can all contribute and in so doing, there will be cooperation and teamwork

among all students that cut across classes.

It is also an opportunity for students with talents to develop their potential. Unlike the

storytelling competitions, a variety show allows more people with different talents to take part.

For instance, the participants for the storytelling competition would be the students who are

good in English. A variety show is different in the sense that as long as one has a potential, be it

in acting, singing or directing, he or she can play a role.

Besides, a variety show is more interesting than a storytelling competition because there

will be variety. There will be sketches, dancing and singing. There will also be colour, music

A variety show is bigger project than storytelling competition. Even though more time is

needed for planning and rehearsing, it is worthwhile because the students will enjoy these

activities. Money will also be needed to get costumes, hire the sound system and decorate the

stage but tickets can be sold to the students to raise some money.

All in, I think a variety show is a better activity. I propose that a variety show be put up.

GENERAL TIPS IN WRITING A SUMMARY1. Understand the given text .

2. Understand the required task.

3. Use logical connectors to link ideas or points.

4. Locate the relevant points.

5. Write a summary in about 60 words including the 10 given words.

6. Paraphrase.

SUMMARY WRITING: GUIDELINES   1. Read the question carefully. 2. Read the passage first to get a general idea. 3. Bracket the relevant part of the passage. 4. Read the question again to make sure you know what you have to summarize. 5. Read over a second or third time if necessary to get better understanding of the passage. 6. Underline in pencil the important points. 7. Jot down in order the main points in the passage. 8. You may then write a rough copy of the summary as far as possible in your own words, if you

can, without changing the meaning of the original passage. If you can’t, just replace words with their synonyms or long expressions with one word or two.

9. Omit all examples. 10. There should be continuity of ideas written in simple English. It should not be a patch work of

sentences and phrases taken here and there from the original passage. 11. Do not exceed the number of words allowed. For example, if the question says in about ’60

words’ (including the 10 words given). It means whatever is written after  61st word will not be taken into consideration.

Page 54: 3 PMR WRITING & SUMMARY MODULES 2012.docx

12. Use the same tense as that in the passage. The summary should be written in the third person and in the past for narrative. (Third persons are: he, she, it and they). For expository writing, use the present tense.

13. Indirect speech is used for the dialogues. 14. Write the exact number of words at the foot of the summary. Please DO NOT CHEAT. If your

summary is short, you may have left out few important points. Usually a summary is about one third of the original passage.

15. Do not waste time during the examination because you only have limited time. To save time draw column lengthwise and write one word in each column in your rough copy. This is to save time.

16. Finally, read the neatly written summary and check if: a. there are mistakes in spelling or grammar b. the summary is accurate.

Dear boys and girls,Everyone faces different forms of stress but not everyone knows what to do about it.

As a student, do you face stressful situations in your life? If so, how do you keep your stress under control? Let me give you a few tips.

First of all, learn to relax. Do not be tensed up with all the things that you have to do. You may have homework, projects, tuition and tests. But this does not mean that your life is terrible. Calm down and then tackle them one by one.

You have to reschedule your activities. Perhaps you have too many activities in a day or a week. Your weekdays after school may be occupied with co-curricular activities in the afternoon. You also go for tuition classes at night. The weekends may be reserved for other activities such as piano lessons, violin lessons or football training and so on. Try to space out your activities. If there are too many, then you have to cut out the unimportant ones.

Getting a good night's sleep is one way to keep your body and mind in good shape. If you sleep late and suffer from lack of sleep, you will not be alert and active. This can cause you to be stressed when you have many things to handle.I hope the tips that I have given you will help you to tackle your stress.Relax and take good care of yourself. Thank you.

Everyone faces different forms of stress, yet some do not know how to cope with it.

Dear Diary,Last week, my cousin drove my friends and me to Cameron Highlands. Located about 120 km from Ipoh and is 5,000 feet above sea level. It has a cool climate and beautiful scenery. When we arrived there, we checked into the Century Pines Resort. The hotel is very beautiful with cafeterias, dining rooms and a gymnasium. Once we were settled, we went to visit a tea plantation. We also visited a tea factory to learn about the process of tea making. Then we enjoyed a cup of tea at the cafe. The next place we visited was Strawberry Park. Fresh strawberries and other products made from the fruit were sold. All of us bought fresh strawberries and jam for our families.

The next day, we walked along one of the forest trails to the waterfall. It was a challenging walk but the beauty of the waterfall made up for our tiredness.

Finally, we visited the flower nurseries around Bertam Valley. The common flowers grown there are roses, carnations, chrysanthemums and dahlias.

Obesity is currently the number one concern regarding our teenagers' well-being today. A survey carried out by the Health Ministry found that sixty per cent of students in primary and secondary schools are classed as obese. Another cause for alarm is the steadily increasing number of obese students over the years. A pharmaceutical company published a special edition health magazine recently, which explained the danger of being overweight or morbidly obese. The magazine offered some tips on what can be done to prevent further health complications. To lose weight, teenagers should never depend on artificial means, for instance slimming pills, weight loss tea or herbal drinks. The effect can be disastrous. A number of people have already died of kidney failure after taking these supplements.

The best and healthiest method to cut down the extra kilograms is to exercise. Be disciplined and persevere while on an exercising programme. Stick to the exercise routine strictly. Do sit-ups every morning upon getting out of bed. This should help to strengthen your stomach muscles. Next, be diligent about working out or go jogging in the park instead. Thirty minutes of running daily will certainly help. To keep motivated, invite a friend along. Cut down on your current food portions and eat more vegetables. Eat a balanced diet. Avoid oily, fattening and sugary food. You will soon see a better, improved you.

Being slim is every girl's dream. Today's fashion, cater more to the thin and tall. Girls would go to any length to be thin, never mind the fact that they are not fit.One good example was Ashley. She was an overweight 15-year-old girl. A year later she was so slim that all her friends envied her. They swore she ate double of everything and yet she was still as thin as a pole. She looked good in all the latest fashion trends. Her friends asked her for her secret success.

Ashley refused to tell them that she was taking slimming pills. However, her friends did not notice anything unusual. Neither did they notice that Ashley was becoming irritated more frequently. There were dark circles around her eyes but it did not occur to them that she was suffering from insomnia. To them, Ashley seemed cheerful and full of energy.

Despite the side effects, Ashley continued to take the pills. She started to have mood swings and severe headaches. She cried easily too. Her friends teased her about being too sensitive. Ashley got angry often and soon they stayed away from her.

One day, Ashley fainted while walking to the canteen. She was taken to the hospital where she fell into a coma. Her parents were later informed that Ashley had a high level of arsenic in her system. One of her kidneys had failed. This was due to the counterfeit slimming pills she had taken. Further tests revealed her liver was also affected. Sadly, Ashley never recovered from her coma and died six weeks later.

Many teenagers today take such pills to obtain or maintain their slimness. Like Ashley, they are also unaware of the side effects. Teenagers need to understand that being slim is not the be all and end all to their lives. Don't let yourself be another Ashley.

Read the passage below and answer the question that follows.

Most of us go shopping to buy what we need. We do our shopping in various places - in shops, at supermarkets or hypermarkets. Sometimes we are satisfied with what we buy and sometimes we feel cheated and feel that we did not get our money's worth. To avoid being cheated, we have to shop wisely. To shop wisely simply means not wasting our money and making sure that the things we buy are really worth our money.

Here are some suggestions on how to shop wisely. Before buying something, it is better to check and compare the prices of goods. By comparing the prices of goods sold at various places, we can make sure that we are not cheated by certain retailers. Checking the expiry dates of goods especially perishable goods is another good habit. It is best to buy products that have long life spans as it helps us to save money in the long run.

Consider buying in bulk for those necessary purchases. You will save money and reduce packaging. Finally, buy only what we need. People often buy things that they never use. This is because they buy at the spur of the moment or because they fall prey to certain sales gimmicks. This is a sheer waste of money. When you consume less, you will also dispose of less waste. Therefore, it is better to plan our purchases and make a shopping list of the things we intend to buy before we go shopping.

Write a summary about the ways of shopping wisely.

Bar Chart - A Report

The survey on the types of courses and activities students were involved in while waiting

for the PMR examination results is based on 100 students from three Form Three classes. The

students were involved in activities like language courses, camps and workshops.

Thirty-five students attended language courses mainly to improve their language abilities.

Twenty of them went for English classes as they are weak in the writing and speaking skills.

Seven of them attended Mandarin classes while eight went for Tamil classes. This is because

their parents want them to take these two subjects for the SPM examination.

Twenty students attended camps which emphasise survival skills. Their parents wanted

them to learn to be independent and also to get them away from the television and the Internet.

Being outdoors was considered to be good for them after all the studying for the PMR

examination.

A total of 45 students attended workshops during the holidays. Nine of them attended

writing workshops where they learnt the techniques of essay writing. This was in preparation for

the SPM examination where students have to write essays of 350 words and more. Public

speaking workshops attracted eleven students. These are students who are fluent in English and

wanted to improve their public speaking skills. Twenty-five students attended art and craft

workshops where they learnt to make handicrafts like batik printing. This is because of their

interest in art.

Form 3A carried out a survey to find out what fruits are most popular with the pupils in

Sekolah Menengah Sri Puteri. The school has 1500 pupils. The results are show in the pie chart.

We can see that durian is the most popular fruit among the pupils. Nearly half or 45% chose the

durian as their most popular fruit. Other than durians, bananas are also widely eaten. They

account for 16% of the popular fruits eaten.

Following closely in popularity to bananas are guavas. A total of 15% of the pupils regard

the guava as their favourite fruit. Rambutans come in fourth at 11 %. However, oranges and

apples are lowly rated. Oranges are popular with just a small number of pupils. Only 7% enjoy

eating them. Similarly, a small percentage amounting to 6% chose the apple as their favourite

fruit.

From the pie chart, we can say that local fruits such as durians, bananas, guavas and

rambutans are more popular than imported fruits such as oranges and apples.

Holiday Camp - A Report

Page 66: 3 PMR WRITING & SUMMARY MODULES 2012.docx

Last week was "Clean The Environment Week' at SMK Tanjung Putra. The Boy Scouts

organized a three-day, two-night camping trip to Hutan Lembing. The aim of the camp was to

create awareness on the importance of keeping the environment clean. The teacher advisor, En.

Manap and three other teachers accompanied twenty Boy Scouts to the camp.

The bus ride took three hours. The students were left by the roadside and everyone had to

trek into Hutan Lembing. It was not easy to walk along the jungle path. Luckily, one of us

brought a machete and used it to cut the branches as we walked. It took us about an hour to

reach the river.

We found a perfect place to pitch our tents by the river. All of us were eager to go for a

swim. However, En. Manap divided us into four groups with a teacher. I was chosen as the

leader for my group. We cooked lunch before we went for a swim. We had brought canned food

like sardines and baked beans. The meal was simple but we enjoyed it.

After lunch, we rested for an hour before we jumped into the inviting water. Even the

teachers joined us. We splashed water at each other and shrieked in pure delight. We broke the

silence in the jungle. En. Manap, who was also our discipline teacher, did not reprimand us for

being noisy. However, he kept reminding us not to discard any rubbish into the river.

That night we had a campfire. We grilled the fish that we caught earlier and listened to

En. Manap's plan for the next day. He wanted us to take pictures of the surroundings and then if

there were any rubbish, we were to clean it up.

The next day, after breakfast, we took pictures as instructed. We were taken aback by the

large amount of rubbish. There were food wrappers, plastic bottles, broken glasses and cans in

the bushes. After two hours, the area around our camp was spick and span. That night, En.

Manap told us why it was important for us to keep the jungle clean. One of the reasons was to

prevent the animals from mistaking the plastic for food. As for the river, it was a source of

water and thus we should not contaminate it.

Flood - Story

Syarifah and her mother were worried. They had been praying that there would not be a

flood like last year. It had been raining cats and dogs for the past three days. Her mother sat

beside the window and watched the rain sadly.

Suddenly, Syarifah heard someone shouting that the water was rising very fast. The rescue

teams were coming to help them evacuate to a community hall in town. Syarifah's mother told

her to pack a few clothes while she collected their important documents. Her father and her

brother started to stack up the tables and chairs to place their refrigerator and TV on them. Then

her father told her to climb up to the roof.

Soon Syarifah, her parents and brother were on their roof. They sat waiting for someone

to come and rescue them. Then her father saw a boat and he used a piece of cloth to wave,

hoping they would notice.

Syarifah and her family were taken to a flood relief centre which was on higher ground. It

was crowded with other flood victims. Her neighbours were also there. They were given canned

food. The flood relief officers also gave them sleeping bags and blankets.

After three days, the water subsided and they were able to go home. They had a shock

because their TV and refrigerator were gone! The water must have taken them. All the things in

their house were damaged. Fortunately, the following day, the authorities came to visit. Each

family was given some money to buy some furniture and basic necessities like rice and sugar. It

was a sad experience for Syarifah but she learned to be brave and patient.

Jogging - An ArticleThe Manifold Benefits of Jogging

Jogging is a great exercise. All one needs is a proper pair of jogging shoes in order to

partake of this activity. Jogging should be encouraged among both the young and old, but in

differing doses.

Jogging is a cheap form of exercise as we need only to invest in a pair of jogging shoes

and we are all set to go. As such, there is no limitation as to who can afford to do this exercise.

In addition, one can jog at any time, provided there is enough lighting and conducive weather.

The benefits of jogging include raising our fitness level, burning a great deal of calories

and easing stiff and tense muscles. In fact, jogging is rated as the number one calorie-buming

exercise alongside cycling.

Jogging is also an exceptional way to get back in shape. When jogging, we build and flex

our muscles. It increases our lung capacity and helps us build stamina too. This is an excellent

activity to shed pounds and inches around the waist.

The important thing to remember is that we ought not to rush into it immediately but

increase our running distance gradually. Jogging three times a week will surely help our overall

well-being. It is also a great family activity to spend quality time together.

Prevent Dengue - Speech

Boys and girls, good morning. Before I begin my speech today, I would like to take this

opportunity to thank the teacher-in-charge for giving me this opportunity to give a talk on how

to prevent the spread of dengue.

Dengue fever is a disease that is caused by the Aedes mosquito. The recent outbreak of

dengue fever in our district is a cause for concern. There are many preventive measures that can

be taken against this disease. All it takes is some effort on our part and we can protect our

family against this much dreaded disease.

To prevent the spread of dengue fever, we must first prevent the breeding of its vector, the

Aedes mosquito. The Aedes mosquito breeds in clean, stagnant water that is easily found in

our homes. We can get rid of the Aedes mosquito by frequently checking and removing

stagnant water in our premises.

In the first place, make absolutely sure that you get rid of areas where mosquitoes breed,

such as standing water in flower pots, basins, containers, potholes, etc. Change the water in

flower vases frequently and make sure you clean the inside of the vases to get rid of mosquito

eggs. Don't forget to remove water from flower pot plates.

Do not provide opportunities for the Aedes mosquito to breed. Keep all containers

including dustbins covered and turn over all pails and water storage containers when not in use.

Moreover, clean gutters and drains to prevent them from being clogged with rubbish. Rubbish

can block the flow of water and the gutters can then become breeding grounds for the Aedes

mosquito.

Finally, dispose of rubbish in the proper way. Check around your house and make sure

that there are no containers left lying about where water can accumulate. Fogging with

insecticide can be effective in reducing the adult mosquito population. As an added precaution,

use mosquito repellant sprays.

Friends, as you can all see, getting rid of the Aedes mosquito is not a formidable task.

All you have to do is to keep your premises clean.

Thank you.

Prevent Break-ins - A Speech

Good morning to our principal, teachers and friends. Thank you for giving me this

opportunity to talk to you all. Almost every day, we come across newspaper reports about

houses being broken into. These incidents could have been prevented if house owners had

observed safety tips and had taken the necessary precautions. Therefore, let me remind you of

some of these safety tips.

First of all, ensure that all doors, windows and gates are locked before you go to

sleep. Check to see if all of your doors have good locks that work properly. If not, replace them

immediately. Have additional security devices like an alarm, a peephole and good padlocks.

Install a peephole in your front door so you can see who is outside before letting them in.

Store cash, jewelry and other valuables in a safe or safety deposit box instead of

letting them lie around the home. If you are going on holiday, stop the delivery of newspapers.

Do not leave newspapers piling outside your house. It will be a telltale sign that there is no one

at home. If you are going to be away for extended periods, then ask a neighbour or relative to

collect your mail and newspapers.

Friends, following a few home security tips not only can make your home safer but it

can add to your peace of mind. Thank you.

Extra Class - Giving Opinion

There are pros and cons when students go to either extra classes in school or private

tuition after school.

In my opinion, private tuition is useful for weak students and for certain core subjects

such as Science, Mathematics and languages. Students who cannot keep pace with the school

lessons may not be able to catch up in their studies. They may not understand the topics taught

in class and may find it difficult to revise their lessons for tests and examinations. Therefore,

they need extra private tuition classes.

Students can also benefit from a tutor's personal attention in core subjects such as

Mathematics, Science and languages. This is because such subjects are generally more difficult.

The step-by-step guidance will help weak students. Another advantage is that tutors often teach

their students shortcut methods for solving problems. Besides, tutors teach according to their

students' pace.

As a matter of fact, it is better to go for one-to-one tuition where the student has one

hundred per cent of their tutor's attention. Weak students have claimed that they have improved

through private tuition, especially in subjects that they are weak at.

So private tuition is likely more beneficial than extra classes in school. Students will get

other points of view from different persons on the subject learned.
