3 RIVERS SAM NEWSLETTER
JULY 2017
President’s Message
Plymouth Camp Out
We’re back from a successful campout at Plymouth Park in Plymouth, WA. It was very hot during our stay,
but it turned out to be very good fishing and sitting around and visiting weather. Special thanks to Sue and
Dennis Mathison who did a great job on their first hosting duties. John and Jeanette Jensen from Walla Walla
joined us for the week-end as potential members. Dot Colpitt was the winner of the 2nd Annual Three Rivers
Sams Cook Off – Best BBQ side dish with her Frogeye Salad. Let the pictures bear witness to the fact that we
remained “cool” even while being invaded by gypsies!
Chapter Jobs
Thanks to all of you who have already volunteered for one of the chapter “jobs” that were presented at the
July meeting. There are only five openings remaining:
Housekeeping Membership
Publicity Samboree/State Rally Coordinator Webmaster If you need a reminder about what these jobs entail or if you would like to volunteer for one of these
positions, please let me know. Remember, these positions will be re-assigned in January so this could be a
good chance to try one out for the remainder of this year.
Member Update
We got a real treat last Thursday when Bob and Marcie Newton joined us for breakfast. It was great to see
them both up and about and seemingly in good spirits. Hopefully, they will be joining us more and more in the
next few weeks.
Chuck Hall is at Avalon Rehab Center in Pasco and is delighted to have visitors so if you have a few minutes or
are in the neighborhood, stop by and say “hi”.
Next Camp Out
We’re looking forward to our annual Long Trip coming up in August to Redmond, OR and then on to Newport,
OR. If it’s anything like last year, we’ll all have a great time.
Dogs for the Deaf Naming Opportunity
It was decided at the July meeting to use some of the excess funds in our Operating Account to participate in
the Naming Opportunities at the Dogs for the Deaf New Second Training Facility in Central Point, Oregon. We
have purchased the naming opportunity for one canine kennel in the new facility and when the facility opens
this winter, there will be a permanent recognition plaque placed on it that reads”:

Harvey Potts, Development Director at Dogs for the Deaf, also asked if we would be willing to submit a
testimonial that they could use in their national advertising to challenge and encourage other Good Sam
Chapters nationally. The following is what was submitted.
Many members of Three Rivers Sams travel with their dogs and we understand what joy and comfort they
bring, even on the best days. We have also seen what a well-trained animal companion can do to ease the life
of those who struggle with everyday activities due to physical limitations or to ease the chaos of an autistic
child’s world. Our chapter is pleased to contribute to this work by naming a kennel in the new Second Training
Facility and we are extremely proud to be recognized as partners with Dogs for the Deaf. As a national charity
of the Good Sams Club, every chapter can easily help through the Naming Opportunities for the new Second
Training Facility. What can your chapter do to help make miracles happen?

In addition, Joretta has written an article for Happy Wheels that explains what we have done and challenges
other Washington Chapters to participate as well in the naming opportunities.
Three Rivers Sams Website
I’m happy to report that the new website is up and running – and we have even been getting visitors. Last
week alone, we had over 20 unique visitors who had over 50 page visits. It was nice to visit with Barb and
Gerry Gaines who came to breakfast last Thursday morning as our first potential members that resulted from
the website. The website can be found through the State Good Sam Website or by the link:
www.threeriverssams.weebly.com.
Membership Promotion at Broadmoor
We also decided to participate in a Membership Promotion with Broadmoor RV in Pasco. They prepare
informational packets that are handed out to each new RV owner and a Three Rivers Sams flyer will be in each
one. We have delivered 300 flyers to Broadmoor and that should take care of July and August. We will re-
evaluate how to proceed at that time. To date, we have had no responses from this promotion.

JULY TRIVIA:
1976: For the first time, women were allowed to enroll as cadets at the United States Military
Academy at West Point.
1928: Sliced bread was first sold to the public. The Chillicothe Baking Company marketed it as “the
greatest forward step in the baking industry since bread was wrapped.” This led to the popular phrase
“greatest thing since sliced bread.” People ate more slices of bread at a time and ate bread more
frequently because of the ease of eating another piece of bread.
