3-Step Passing GameTerry Curtis, UMS-Wright H.S. (AL)2008 Nike Coach of the Year Clinic
Saturday, March 8, 2008
½ time under center, ½ time in shotgun
Advantage of 2 backs/I backs = don’t have to have great QB
3 key routes in 3-step game:a) Hitch – on LOSb) Slant – 3 step QBs warm up throwing these routesc) Fade
HitchRec. – inside leg up; 2 steps upfield, 1 step back toward LOSQB – quick (1-step) throw at LOSbasically a run play
Slant Rec. – break at 45º; catch & get upfield; vs. press-man D, run at inside shoulder of DBQB – can be a 1-step or 3-step route
Fade – MUST have this routeRec. – if defense is backed off, turn it into a slantQB – 1-step throw
Base protection – everyone steps down inside and blocks inside gap
Bubble routeRec. – outside receiver runs slant route; can be assigned to block down
inside receiver starts backed off LOS a little further than usual; 1st step is lateral
“90 Bubble” call = no read; just throw the Bubble route“90 Bubble X Slant” call = read Lber to decide where to throw“90 Bubble X Go” call = X starts in to block, then breaks to fade route“90 Bubble Z Go” call = show Bubble & Z starts Bubble, then breaks downfield off hip
of outside receiver
in Gun: Slant is 5-step play Fade is a little deeper
from MOF, TE should be at hash, outside receiver at top of the numbershigh to low read on pass plays
Asst. coaches:a) work hardb) be loyal to head coach
