WHO WE ARE. VERDANT ASSOCIATES, LLCVERDANT is a landscape architecture and planning firm located in The Woodlands, TX. We offer innovative designs to the landscape architecture industry by creating craftful and practical urban solutions. Our various backgrounds and diverse project history brings valuable knowledge and collaboration to each project we take on.

S. Tyson ScottPresident

As founder and president of VERDANT, Tyson Scott oversees every aspect of the design-build process. His work as an urban designer extends to higher education and corporate campuses. He has over 15 years of experience working in the landscape industry. As a leader, Tyson continues to raise the bar on VERDANT’s quality of work and positive impact on the environment.

In 1998, Tyson began his career in landscape architecture from the ground up. It was his passion for creating balance in nature paired with his education at Texas A&M University, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Horticulture with and emphasis in Landscape Design in 2006, that led to the creation of his first LLC, Unique Landscapes. As a consultant, he designs with function driven creativity.

In 2014, Tyson rebranded the company as VERDANT— spearheading the collaborative design-build landscape for the nationally award-winning Nutrabolt Headquarters. He soon reached another company milestone with several significant higher education design-build projects, including Texas A&M University’s Engineering Activities Building Complex and the conceptual development plan of the Texas A&M University System’s RELLIS Campus.

Tyson values moving forward through shared experiences. His work reflects his extensive field experience and knowledge of how design elements function. His designs are original, raw, and influenced by function. Above all, Tyson believes in revitalizing the earth by creating harmony in nature and designing innovative, sustainable spaces.

Elizabeth ‘Violet’ Mak, PLA, RAS, SITES AP Director of Landscape Architecture

Prior to joining VERDANT, as founder and managing partner of Elizabeth Austin Associates, Violet oversaw the design and general operations of the firm. She was involved in every aspect of the design development and construction administration process. Her experience ranges from commercial retail centers and corporate headquarters to parks and high-end residential projects. This gives her a large base of knowledge to draw from when it comes to technical feasibility, budget and scheduling of project delivery.

Violet worked for a number of award winning Landscape Architecture firms, including Clark Condon Associates (Houston, TX), Hirsch & Associates (Anaheim, CA), and Trowbridge & Wolf LLP (Ithaca, NY) before branching out on her own. Violet was the recipient of the Nina Francesca Schack Memorial Award from the Department of Landscape Architecture at Cornell University. She graduated Cum Laude with distinction in Research for her Honors Thesis, an “Ecological Analysis of an Urban Greenway: The Cayuga Waterfront Trail Project Phase 3, Ithaca, NY, USA”.

In her free time, Violet volunteers her time and expertise to educate others about the field of Landscape Architecture through various public projects and non-profit organizations, including designing and coordinating education gardens from local elementary schools.

DESIGN APPROACH

At VERDANT, our design approach is a collaborative effort between ourselves, clients, and consultants. We find that communication is key for a successful and continued working relationship. We emphasize the importance of attentive listening as means of enhancing our clients’ experience, promoting innovation through collaboration, and forming better designers. Each client and each project has varying needs and constraints and we pride ourselves on our ability to adapt, rather than taking a one size fits all approach. This allows us to consistently deliver eye-catching designs and people friendly spaces.

Our process begins with an analysis of the site’s current conditions before conceptualizing a design that takes into account past, present, and future uses. Our goal is to create spaces that are functional, while at the same time aesthetically pleasing, sustainable and regenerative in their presence. We focus integrating our projects with the context surrounding it, whether that be on the property or into the greater biosphere as a whole. Each project is treated with the care and attention of our multidisciplinary staff no matter if it is a university campus, corporate complex, or individual residence.

We strive to create livable centers that not only conserve existing resources but regenerate them through sustainable practices and maintenance.

INSTITUTIONAL ENGINEERING ACTIVITIES BUILDING AT TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITYThe complex is the new home for the Dwight Look College’s Engineering Academic and Student Affairs (EASA) department. A sucessful effort to challenge the norm at Texas A&M University’s flagship campus, this complex was fueled by the idea of creating pocket parks that would reflect the exponential growth and forward thinking of the 25 by 25 initiative. FREDRICK E. GIESECKE ENGINEERING RESEARCH BUILDING AT TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITYThe Engineering Research Building is the first building in Texas A&M University’s Research Park. The vision for this development relies on contemporary design. Linear planters along with clean borders complement the building’s architecture.

PARKS AND RECREATIONBELLAIRE TOWN SQUARE*Bellaire Town Square is a 7.5-acre project right in the heart of Bellaire, Texas. Completed in phases the master plan connects City Hall, Parks and Recreation Services, and Police Station with a series of pathways and The Great Lawn. The open lawn becomes a great place to hold community gatherings with the historic town gazebo and performance pavilion on either side. The park also features the Bellaire Family Aquatics Center, tennis courts, little league field, and a series of play and picnic areas. Through all of these features the park becomes the heart of Bellaire.

ORIZABA PARK*Historical Orizaba Park is an existing 2.73 acre park located in Long Beach, California with dense residential, industrial, and commerical uses. This project was a successful effort in reviving a neighborhood landmark from a rundown playground and railway into a thriving cultural park space. The project’s scope included the development of a master plan that would satisfy the wants and needs of the community. The transformed park now features a splash pad, skate park, garden, community center, and structures detailing the unique history of the site.

COMMERCIALSAUDI ARAMCO RESEARCH FACILITYThe new Saudi Aramco Research Facility in Houston Texas was a design-build partnership that involved collaboration on many levels as well as many different stakeholders. The schematic phase involved multiple concepts and ideas which were presented to the client locally and shared with stakeholders overseas. The 60,000 sqft headquaters was remodeled to offer a Mediterranean atmosphere with a southern flare. Within this state-of-the-art facility we were able to create unique spaces for visitors and employees to enjoy the outdoors through the lush Mediterranean plant palette, wooden shade structures, and outdoor patio areas.

STONERIDGE TOWNE CENTER*Stoneridge Towne Centre is a major retail center that is anchored by the Main Street courtyard. The project is centered around a roundabout with two major axes, one vehicle and one pedestrian. Through these axes parking, restaurants, and shops are accessed. The project is rounded out with two outdoor plazas and fountain.

KATY GREEN*Built in phases, Katy Green is a 16-acre mixed use development off of the Katy Freeway and Greenhouse Road. The master plan consists of a series of shopping centers, an office building, and connection parking garage. Through consistent landscaping, we connect the dissimilar buildings and create a central corridor between the office building and parking garage.

SOUTHWEST ENERGY COMPANY*Phase I of the Southwestern Energy Company’s corporate campus is designed to blend the indoors with the surrounding landscape. This connection is made in the glass façade that shows the surrounding wooded area from anywhere in the building and the rooftop deck. Two courtyards, an extended conference space and an outdoor dining space, complete the connection, giving workers outdoor areas to meet and relax. The outdoor dining courtyard features a large water wall to provide cooling, and a raised planter garden that provides ingredient for the onsite chef.

NUTRABOLT WORLD HEADQUATERS With clean lines and a modern, collaborative feel, the goal was to bring a slice of Silicon Valley to Texas. Nutrabolt is an INC 5000 company, with a group of young, energetic, and passionate team members. The brand new, state-of-the-art headquaters represents their spirited culture. With a full indoor/outdoor workout facility, a rooftop putting green, athletic field, and a zen garden, this headquarters goes beyond a place of work.
