NEXT WEEK’S LITURGICAL MINISTERS

MASS INTENTIONS

THE SANCTUARY CANDLE in the upstairs Church will burn from 11/16/19 to 11/29/19 in Memory of Jack Daley, requested by St. Mary’s Senior Choir.

Flowers on the altar this week are in Memory of Immacolata Noto, Birthday Remembrance, requested by Her Family.

If you would like to contribute towards the beautiful flowers on our altar, there is a notebook in the main entrance of the Church. It is easy to fill out a request and a great way to honor someone who has passed away or celebrate a great event in someone’s life.

PRAYING TOGETHER is one of our greatest privileges at St. Mary’s High School. Each school morning we gather in prayer. We would be honored to pray for you! Please email your prayer request to [email protected] or call the school at 568-5692.

In Hebron, David is hailed as king by all the tribes of Israel. Jesus is anointed king on the wood of His cross, a sign of paradox, of defeat, yet final victory. Through His cross we have passed from darkness into the kingdom of light.

History has no favorites when it comes to kings. She lets us learn about both the good and the bad among them. There is Saint Louis IX of France who, among other good works, gifted the world with the magnificent Saint-Chapelle in Paris built to house relics of the true Cross. Contrast him with Henry VIII of England, who only built pleasure palaces for himself, and left the Catholic Church just so that he could divorce his legitimate wife and satisfy his lust for another woman.

While most freedom-loving Americans are distrustful of the whole idea of monarchs and majesties, there are still a great many of us who remain fascinated by their mischief and mayhem. Consider the size of the American TV audience for their weddings and funerals. These folks seem to have forgotten what our Revolutionary War was all about.

But we have to forget all that when it comes time to celebrate this Sunday each November to honor Christ our King, and close out the liturgical year. We know we’re in a different realm of history when we call Jesus “King of the Universe” in the formal name of this feast. That brings an added dimension to our reflections. We are still in the category of history, but now we are considering the Person whose coming divided it into “before and after Him.”

He is at its center, as He ought to be. He in fact never wanted to be a king. Only in His last hours on earth, when He was put on a sham trial, and a certain Pontius Pilate asked Him “Are you a king?” Jesus quickly answered “You say so,” which can be interpreted “That’s your word. (For My part,) I came to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to My voice.” To which cynical Pilate quickly asked, “What is truth?” Unfortunately for Pilate, and ourselves, he never got a direct answer from Jesus. But we readers of Scripture remember when Christ said: “I am the

Way, and the Truth and the Life.” Such a deep, bold and royal answer! It’s up to us to remember that.

The whole matter of truth becomes problematic for us in the unique time and place we find ourselves occupying. Let’s face it: lies are all around us. They emanate from all the usual suspects, and even a few we never would have expected, like some of our bishops and cardinals. Did truth flee our world, only to orbit another planet? Not at all, for Jesus also told us “I am with you all days even to the end of the age.”

He is here with us, dwelling first of all in the Eucharistic presence, and also in the hearts of men and women who exemplify what He stood for when He was personally present here on earth. Fortunately, we have both a Book and a Body to remind us of all that, the former being the bible and the latter being this Catholic Church He founded. While His truth always offers a criterion to decide by, there is now a problem we have to deal with. We who are so concerned about speaking in politically correct terms have to remember that the Truth of our King does not always resonate with an idea that is current or popular. Our Lord really doesn’t care if someone is made uncomfortable by hearing His truth spoken. Our King also despises the timid.

Ultimately believing the Truth leads us to the Way, and the Life. Our King in fact demanded as much. This is the practical way to make our response to His ineffable love. Otherwise we’re just playing games. The worst pretender is, of course, the devil, who as father of lies uses every clever disguise he can to trick us into accepting his truth which leads to us bowing before him.

That is precisely why I always love hearing stories of saints who beat the devil at his own game, who accepted our true King and how He thinks about things. One famous story you may know is that of a reporter who watched Mother Saint Teresa of Calcutta as she cleaned the maggot-infested wound of a man on the street. All he could say to Mother was, “I wouldn’t do that for a million dollars.” Mother is supposed to have replied immediately, with a bit of a wry smile, “I wouldn’t either.”

THIS WEEK AT ST. MARY’S

Many Thanksto those who participated

in the St. Mary’s Supper Club last week.

We look forward to seeing

you at the next one in January!

WINTER IS HEREAnd with it comes cold and flu season. This seems a good time to remind people to refrain from receiving from the cup if you are feeling ill or have a cold. Eucharistic Ministers are taught to wipe the chalice with a clean part of the purificator, and the chalices are washed with hot, soapy water after every Mass. But if you do not feel well, please do not receive from the cup. The fullness of Jesus’ presence is in either species (bread or wine). If you are not receiving from the chalice, it is customary to make a bow when you pass by as a sign of respect. Also, during these winter months some people choose to make the sign of peace through a wave or a bow rather than shaking hands. It is sometimes awkward to adjust, but a courteous wave back is a friendly response.

Christmas LuncheonConfraternity of the Most Holy Rosary Christmas luncheon will be held at Tucker’s Restaurant in Southwick on Tuesday, December 3, at 12 noon. Fr. Frank Furman will be our speaker. Cost per person is $24. Meal choices are Grilled Salmon, Yankee Pot Roast, or Chicken Potpie. All monies and meal choices must be in to Toni Hills at 50 Highland View St. by Monday, November 25.

“LITTLE CHURCH” –Sunday School is Cool! For young children, which is held every Sunday in the lower church during the 10:00 Mass. Come by any time to visit and meet the other children and families! You can watch the Mass on the “big screen” if you stay with your children.

ADVENT STUDY: “It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas,” but what does that look like at your house? Most of us anticipate the great sales at the mall on the day after Thanksgiving, stringing lights on the outside of our house, and decorating the inside of our homes. But how exactly are we preparing our hearts for the greatest gift we’ve ever been given? Through an exploration of the mystery of the Incarnation, the Virgin Birth, and the events surrounding the arrival of Jesus, this Advent study offers an opportunity to experience the joy of the true meaning of Christmas. Join us at St. Mary’s Parish Center on Wednesdays, December 4, 11 and 18, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. as we learn how better to prepare our hearts for the gift of our Savior. All are welcome for this free study. Please call Joanne at the Office of R e l i g i o u s E d u c a t i o n 5 6 2 - 5 4 8 4 , o r e m a i l [email protected] to register or with any questions.

GIVING TREE: On the weekend of November 30 & December 1, the “Giving Tree” will be on the altar. Every year, we reach out to our families so we may help to brighten a child’s Christmas. Those who can are invited to pick a name off the tree and buy a present for that child. Please bring the wrapped gift to the church or the Parish Center by December 16! Thank you for your generosity!

PARISH COFFEE HOUR: Come give thanks to all your fellow parishioners at the November 24th Parish Coffee Hour over a cup of coffee! There will be donuts and fresh baked goods too! This will be hosted by the Confraternity of the Most Holy Rosary! Thank you to all of them!!

THANK YOU to all the Religious Education families that gave so generously to the St. Vincent de Paul Food Drive for the Thanksgiving baskets. Your donations make a big impact for many!

FIRST GRADE RELIGIOUS EDUCATION will be held Sunday, December 1. We begin with the 10:00 Mass and then proceed to the elementary school for the class for children and parents. Babysitting is available for siblings.

AS THANKSGIVING APPROACHES, we are reminded of the many gifts and talents the families, teachers and volunteers bring to the parish and our Religious Education program and we say THANK YOU! Many blessings to all! The ORE Staff, Jeanne, Joanne & Kay

CCD CORNERHello St Mary’s Parishioners! Thanksgiving is quickly approaching and the St. Vincent dePaul Society will once again provide food baskets for the less fortunate in our community - with your help! Last year we provided

100 families with Thanksgiving baskets that included everything needed for a Thanksgiving feast! We would like to do the same this year and are in need of monetary donations from parishioners for the purchase of turkeys. If you are able to contribute, please mail your donation to the St. Vincent dePaul Society at 30 Bartlett St. Or place your donation in an envelope marked St. Vincent dePaul in the collection basket. You folks are really the best of the best and we thank you for your continued support! Can you put a turkey on their table this year?

MONTH OF NOVEMBER

It is a good and holy practice to lift up the dead to God’s mercy. One way to do this is by turning in your ALL SOULS ENVELOPES. They will be placed on the altar.

OUR LADY OF GUADALUPESILVER ROSE PRAYER SERVICE

Sunday, December 8, at 3 p.m.

The purpose of the Silver Rose is to share the message of Our Lady of Guadalupe and promote respect for life by

participating in this meaningful pilgrimage. The Silver Rose program demonstrates the unity between Knights of Columbus in Canada, the United States and Mexico,

through a series of prayer services promoting the dignity of of all human life and honoring Our Lady. Each year, from

early March through mid-December, Silver Roses are stewarded by Knights of Columbus councils along routes from Canada to Mexico. Every stop the Silver Rose makes throughout the pilgrimage is a rosary-centered occasion of Knights, parishioners and community members to pray for the respect for life, for the spiritual renewal of each nation, and for the advancement of the message of Our Lady of

Guadalupe. And now the Silver Rose makes its way to Our Lady of the Valley Parish for this special prayer service

located at 33 Adams Street, Easthampton.

Mary, Mother of God, Pray for Us!

Do You Knit or Crochet?Knitting or crocheting a prayer shawl is a ministry here at St. Mary’s Church. It is a labor of love that becomes a precious treasure to help our sisters and brothers in Christ. Will you be willing to use your talent and help us minister and serve in our community? Beginning in January 2020, our ministry will give out Baptism blankets to any baby that receives this sacrament at St. Mary’s. What if you do not knit or crochet? Would you like to learn? We can teach you a simple pattern to follow and with prayer, love and grace, you can participate in this ministry. There are patient, loving people on this team that would welcome the opportunity to teach a person how to knit or crochet a shawl. Prayerfully consider helping this ministry. Contact Michele Suhocki for any questions or join the ministry: [email protected], 413-562-5477, ext. 144.

STAND OUT

Feeling hurt, angry, or demoralized about the sexual abuse crisis plaguing the Catholic Church? Our parish wants to help, and that’s why we’ve ordered copies of a new book

for every family in the parish. The book is titled Letter to a Suffering Church: A Bishop Speaks on the Sexual Abuse Crisis by Bishop Robert Barron. We invite you to pick up your free copy after Mass or stop by the parish office. (Some copies are available in Spanish.) Also, we will be hosting two gatherings to discuss the book: how it informs about the crisis and encourages us in the path forward. Please plan to attend one of the sessions. They will be held on Sunday, December 1, and Monday, December 2, at 6:30 p.m. in the Lower Church.
