them do their thing,” he said.
A slow hand Over three years, Michael Ramies went from novice to champion at Laguna Seca. What does it take to win? Practice. “The saying that prac-tice makes perfect is absolutely true” about auto racing, he added. Also important: good training,
natural talent without an over-abundance of fear, and knowing when to back off. “You definitely have to know your limits,” he said. “You don’t go into a corner at full speed and see what happens. You work up to it.” The top five racers in a class tend to have lap times that are very close to each other, he said. Right behind them is the mid-field, who tend to be less than a second slower than the leaders. The rest lag by a bit more than a second. “A second sounds like
nothing, but in a race, that’s mas-sive,” Mr. Ramies said. In the spectrum of athletes’ reaction times, baseball and foot-ball players lead the field, he said. Motor sports racers are at the other end just above the slowest group, golfers. “You have to have a slow hand movement so the car can have the time to react and then go around the problem,” he said. “We see quickly but we react slowly. ... We don’t slam on the brakes. We do what needs to be done.” A

MENLO PARK CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT CITIZENS’ BOND OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE
OPEN POSITIONS
The Menlo Park City School District is seeking potential candidates to fill open positions on the Bond Oversight Committee. In June 2006, vot-ers within the Menlo Park City School District boundaries approved the Measure U Bond to modernize and provide new school facilities. The Bond was passed per Proposition 39, which requires the creation of a Bond Oversight Committee. This volunteer committee was created in September 2006 and is responsible for performing oversight activities such as review of bond expenditures and preparation of annual reports as set forth by Proposition 39. The Committee meets at minimum on a quarterly basis. The Committee is comprised of seven people from differ-ent segments of the Community. The District is currently seeking to fill two vacant positions. Caltrain to add baby bullets on weekends Caltrain will be adding express service to its regular schedule of trains traveling between San Fran-cisco and San Jose on weekends, Caltrain announced last week. Beginning Jan. 1, Caltrain will introduce its “Baby Bul-let” service on weekends: four trains that will make seven stops between San Jose and San Francisco. The stops will be at Sunnyvale, Mountain View, Palo Alto, Redwood City, Hills-dale, San Mateo and Millbrae. The new Baby Bullet train will make two roundtrips between San Francisco and San Jose, once in the morning and once in the afternoon, according to Caltrain. Regular weekend trains, which will continue, make more than 20 stops on north and south-bound routes, Caltrain said. Caltrain officials said the new service, which will initially run as a pilot project for three months, is a response to public requests for faster weekend trips from the Peninsula to San Francisco. Caltrain said it is trying new ways to boost ridership and rev-enue in the face of a projected $2.3 million budget gap for its
2011 fiscal year.

Portola Valley resident has idea for protecting polar iceBy Dave BoyceAlmanac Staff Writer
The ice at the North Pole is melting. That’s not good, scientists say. Not
for the polar bears who live there; not for Santa Claus, who reportedly lives there; and not for the rest of life on this planet now and into the future. Leslie Field, an engineer and Portola Valley resident, has a plan for covering polar ice to slow its melting and will give a presentation at 7:30 p.m. Tues-day, Dec. 7, in the Community Hall at 765 Portola Road. As North Pole ice melts, the Arctic Ocean becomes less white, which means less
sunlight — and less heat — reflected through the atmo-sphere and out into space. The increasingly darker ocean then absorbs increasingly more heat. “It’s a positive feedback loop, which will always get an engineer’s attention,” Ms. Field said in a phone inter-view. “What can one do to interrupt that (feedback loop)?” What she has done is exper-iment with tiny spheres of ref lective glass. There are details to be worked out, but if such microspheres of glass were implanted in fabric-like squares about three-feet on a side, with the fabric distrib-
uted on the surface of the ice, it might work, Ms. Field said. About 20 percent of global warming is due to melting ice, she said. As the oceans warm, significant change could come to major currents such as the Gulf Stream, which has mod-erated weather on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean since the last ice age. Notions are out there to “fertilize” the ocean with iron filings to encourage greenhouse gas absorption by plankton, or to add particles to the upper atmosphere to reflect sunshine. Such fixes are commonly known as geo-engineering, but Ms. Field prefers to call her idea eco-
engineering. Scientists worry about unin-tentional consequences. The airborne particles, for exam-ple, could reduce the efficiency of solar driven power plants by 20 percent, according to a 2009 study by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administra-tion. Ms. Field’s proposal benefits by being relatively inexpen-sive, relatively benign, and reversible, she said, adding that she has done small-scale tests in the Sierra Nevadas and on a Canadian lake, and that she is hoping to find funding for a larger test. The Menlo Park Chorus will perform traditional carols and offbeat versions of holiday favor-ites in its “Twisted Christmas” concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 10, at St. Bede’s Church, 2650 Sand Hill Road in Menlo Park. “We are combining famil-iar Christmas tunes with new arrangements,” says director April McNeely. “The chorus will also perform some funny spoofs.” Refreshments will be served after the performance. Tickets will be available at the door for $15 for general admission, $12 for students and seniors, and free for children under 12.
Santa drops by Santa will visit all three of the Woodside Fire Protection Dis-trict fire stations during their open houses from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 15. Santa will pose for pictures and ask what children would like for Christmas, but heís also hoping families will bring along new toys to give to underprivi-leged children. This month the fire stations are collecting toys on behalf of the Toys for Tots program. At the open houses, families are invited to climb on the fire trucks and enjoy refreshments at these locations: 3111 Woodside Road in Woodside; 135 Portola Road in Portola Valley; and 4091 Jefferson Ave. in Redwood City.
Plum Pudding Party The Woodside Village Church is hosting its annual Plum Pud-
ding Party at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 12, in the Courtyard (in Guild Hall if it rains). The event provides plum pud-dings, cupcakes for the kids, hot cider, coffee and hot chocolate, and lots of Christmas carol sing-ing, said church spokesperson Barbara Tagg. All ages will get a chance to play carols on hand chimes before Santa arrives with good-ies for the kids. Vic Frederick, a longtime Woodside resident, stops shav-ing each fall and grows a beard that, by Christmas time, is “considerable and transforms him into a Santa with a real, live beard,” she said. The church is at 3195 Wood-side Road in Woodside.
Shadow puppets Daniel Barash of the Shadow Puppet Workshop will present “Spin Me a Shadow, Tell Me a Winter’s Tale” at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, at the Por-tola Valley Library, 765 Portola Road. Mr. Barash will introduce the audience to the art of shadow puppetry, followed by a shadow puppet performance of folktales from around the world. The pro-gram is appropriate for all ages.
Masonic Lodge officers The public is invited to the installation of officers for the Three Great Lights #651 Mason-ic Lodge at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec.
12, at 651 Roble Ave. in Menlo Park. Light refreshments will be served after installation. For reservations, call 853-8900.
Art lecture Kay Payne, docent at the De Young Musuem of San Fran-cisco, will give a slide-lecture presentation on the Post-Im-pressionist exhibit now at the museum. The presentation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday,
Dec. 8, at the Portola Valley Library at 765 Portola Road. For more information, call 851-0560.
Phillips Brooks The Phillips Brooks School Chorus is 50-singers strong and will celebrate the holidays at 1:45 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 8, at Kepler’s bookstore, 1010 El Camino Real in Menlo Park.
