Topreventaccidentalenginestarting,turntheignitionswitchtotheOFFposition,placeadonotoperatetagattheignitionswitchlocationanddisconnectandtapetheelectricalconnectiontothestopsolenoidthatislocatedonthefuelinjectionpump.
NOTICEKeepallpartscleanfromcontaminants.
Contaminantsmaycauserapidwearandshortenedcomponentlife.
NOTICECaremustbetakentoensurethatfluidsarecontainedduringperformanceofinspection,maintenance,testing,adjustingandrepairoftheproduct.Bepreparedtocollectthefluidwithsuitablecontainersbeforeopeninganycompartmentordisassemblinganycomponentcontainingfluids.
RefertoSpecialPublication,NENG2500,"CaterpillarToolsandShopProductsGuide"fortoolsandsuppliessuitabletocollectandcontainfluidsonCaterpillarproducts.

ValveLashAdjustment
Ifthevalvelashrequiresadjustmentseveraltimesinashortperiodoftime,excessivewearexistsinadifferentpartoftheengine.Repairtheprobleminordertopreventmoredamagetotheengine.
Notenoughvalvelashcanbethecauseofrapidwearofthecamshaftandvalvelifters.Notenoughvalvelashcanindicatethattheseatsforthecylinderheadvalvesareworn.
Cylinderheadvalvesbecomedamagedduetothefollowingcauses:
Fuelinjectionnozzlesthatoperateincorrectly
Excessivedirtandoilarepresentonthefiltersfortheinletair.
Incorrectfuelsettingsonthefuelinjectionpump.
Theloadcapacityoftheengineisfrequentlyexceeded.
Toomuchvalvelashcancausebrokenvalvestems,springs,andspringretainers.Toomuchvalvelashcanbeanindicationofthefollowingproblems:
Worncamshaftandvalvelifters
Wornrockerarms
Bentpushrods
Brokensocketontheupperendofapushrod
Looseadjustmentscrewforthevalvelash
Ifthecamshaftandvalveliftersshowrapidwear,lookforfuelinthelubricationoilordirtylubricationoilasapossiblecause.
Thevalvelashismeasuredbetweenthetopofthevalvestemandtherockerarmlever.
Note:Number1cylinderisatthefrontoftheengine.

Accidentalenginestartingcancauseinjuryordeathtopersonnel.
Topreventaccidentalenginestarting,turntheignitionswitchtotheOFFposition,placeadonotoperatetagattheignitionswitchlocationanddisconnectandtapetheelectricalconnectiontothestopsolenoidthatislocatedonthefuelinjectionpump.
Removethevalvemechanismcoverandperformthefollowingprocedureinordertoadjustthevalvelash:
1.
SetthetopcenterpositionforNo.1pistononthecompressionstroke.Beforeadjustmentsaremade,lightlytapeachrockerarmatthetopoftheadjustmentscrew.Useasoftmallettoensurethatthelifterseatsagainstthecamshaft'sbasecircle.
Note:Later3054enginesrequiretheuseofaTORXT27drivertoadjustvalvelash.
2.
Rotatethecrankshaftinthenormalrotationoftheengine.WhentheinletvalveoftheNo.4cylinderhasopenedandtheexhaustvalveoftheNo.4cylinderhasnotcompletelyclosedmeasurethevalvelashoftheinletvalveandtheexhaustvalveofNo.1cylinder.Ifnecessary,makeanadjustmenttotheinletvalveandtheexhaustvalveonNo.1cylinder.
a.
Loosenthevalveadjustmentscrewlocknutthatisonadjustmentscrew(1).
b.
Placeappropriatefeelergauge(2)betweentherockerarmandthevalve.Turnadjustmentscrew(1)whilethevalveadjustmentscrewlocknutisbeingheldfromturning.Adjustthevalvelashuntilthecorrectspecificationisachieved.
