What a celebration!! 30 years has officially passed for the F-100 Western Nationals and I am here to report that the show is alive and well!

What a day it was. The day started very early for most of us and I’m quite sure that many of you were working late into the night to get your trucks ready for the show. It was sure was noticeable by the condition and quality of the trucks that attended. Of course this show was all about the legends of the show and the major role they played keeping it going over the years in one way or another.

From the smiles, and yes tears, that many had once they laid eyes on a old friend, the emotions were high at times. In some cases, it had been 20 years or longer since they had last seen each other. It was very touching to see their memories were as fresh as yesterday.

There were three truckers honored today; Gary Ewing who started the show, Bill Lee for keeping the show

going from Arizona to it’s current home in Anaheim California and Dale Beverley who only missed one show. All three have held positions in Pickups Limited over the years and gave effortlessly during good times and bad times.

I would also like to thank everyone who came to the show. While other car shows have decreased in numbers us Ford guys keep on truckin’. The registration numbers for this 30th anniversary event were the same as last year while spectators were way up! Good job to everybody for knowing a good time when they see it. continued on page 6

Comments from the 30th annual F-100 Western Nationals

Al Ubrun: “I was shocked when I entered the park and saw all of the Ford trucks parked on the left before the gate. I was wondering if the show was moved from under the trees. It wasn’t until I recognized several of the pickups as being Orange County rides that I realized what you guys had done. Dang, how many members do you have in your club to have this many trucks all parked together? You guys and gals do such a great job of hosting this show.”

Gary Ewing: “Sorry Steve, but I am getting a little emotional. We have 30 Pickups Limited members who attended the very first show that are all here today. Can you believe it, 30 members from 30 years ago? And yes, I remember that you were there covering the show for Truckin’ magazine. You guys have given me the greatest gift anyone could ever give me. Thanks for allowing me to be a part of your 30th Anniversary Celebration.” He wiped a tear from his eye as he mentioned, “I really miss Wendell Smith.”

Pat Ford: “You know that Jan and I put 30 years into making the F-100 Supernationals into the event it has become. You guys (PUL) now have best all-classic Ford truck show on the West Coast. Heck, you have the best Ford F-100 show period. You guys have captured the spirit of what kind of show the classic truck world needs to ensure the future preservation of the fat fendered Ford trucks. Jan and I had a great time and can’t wait to come back next year!”

Diane from Mid-Fifties: “With the addition of the Friday cruise, you guys have now made this event into the West Coast’s finest two-day Ford truck show. We hauled a full truck load of classic truck parts for customers who ordered parts and had us bring them to the show. This was a win-win for both Mid-Fifty and our customers who saved a bundle on shipping. I think they like our service where we personally hand deliver parts to them. Our business will focus on pre-selling even more parts that we will deliver to customers in 2013 to the 31st Annual F-100 Western Nationals.

Mid-Fifty’s Scott Miller added: “We will be bringing the Limo (stretched F-100 parts and people hauler) to next year’s event. I know this crowd will really appreciate our truck and how much we are involved. At this show we get the opportunity to put a face with a name when we bring this many parts to the West Coast.” When asked about sales he commented, “We aren’t taking anything home. We sold practically everything we brought to the show. And, we had a great time.”

Bill Lee: “Wow, it is great to see this many old friends. Thanks for having me and Gary host the show’s history tent.”

Walt Pocock - Mr. #1: “Hey Steve, I just wanted to let you know that I am the first one to register for next year’s show. Can’t wait to see what you guys have planned for next year.”

Will Willis: Fantastic show. See you next year.

I personally wish to thank all Pickups Limited, Orange County Chapter members for being such gracious women and men when it came to hosting the 30th Annual F-100 Western Nationals. This show will go down in the club’s history as being one of our finest events – ever. What a display of trucks, all of you made our guests feel welcome with warm greeting, a hand shake and smile. This was perfection. A job well done!

Uncle Walt.......the big cherry

what’s with those cherries? bet you can’t eat just one! by Chris Travers

From what I have been told, the story of the Cherries” goes back much farther than I do. My first introduction to these gut bombs was at the Western Nationals in 2003. We were all sitting out in the evening and Dale Beverley thought it would be a good idea to have a movie night. Of course a warm summer evening next to a river brought on a ton of mosquitoes. NOT TO FEAR, WALT WAS HERE and out came the Cherries. I really don’t remember if they became a repellent or if we just didn’t care after a few minutes but they sure were good.Fast Forward to 2006 during the Super Tour to Knoxville when Bill Lee comes pounding at my door in Santa Rosa NM. He gives me this jar of Cherries and tells me that it is now my job to keep them cold for the rest of the trip. I didn’t remember 2003 at the time (just like most of the ‘60’s) so Ed and I just started munching away. Who knew! We slept like babies.Who knows when and where it actually started but for me, one thing is for sure. This magic blend of maraschino cherries (with stems) and some old fashion HOOCH that Walt Pocock passed on to me sure has brought friends together over the years with lots of laughs and memories. It makes for a great BBQ charcoal lighter too!

the The Friday Cruise... By Chris TraversThe best kept secret of th eF-100 Western Nationals is out Friday cruise and dinner. This year we were guests at the Wally Parks NHRA Museum in Pomona and were also the featured group at Ruby’s weekly cruise in Whittier where over 200 vehicles were on display. Plan to join us next year!

A special thank you to all our vendors and sponsors of the show which allows us to grow and add value to each new year. Last I’d like to thank all my fellow club members who make this show work. Without everyone’s help it would not be what it has become. Congratulations to all the winners, and we will see you all next year, June 22, 2013.

The full story of the 2012 event is here for everybody to look back on with fond memories so enjoy!

COSMIC LAWS They are called laws....because Truer words were never spoken 1. Law of Mechanical Repair - After your hands become coated with grease, your nose will begin to itch and you’ll have to pee. 2. Law of Gravity - Any tool, nut, bolt, screw, when dropped, will roll to the least accessible place in the universe. 3. Law of Probability - The probability of being watched is directly proportional to the stupidity of your act. 4. Law of Random Numbers - If you dial a wrong number, you never get a busy signal - and someone always answers. 6. Variation Law - If you change lines (or traffic lanes), the one you were in will always move faster than the one you are in now. 7. Law of the Bath - When the body is fully immersed in water, the telephone rings. 8. Law of Close Encounters - The probability of meeting someone you know INCREASES dramatically when you are with someone you don’t want to be seen with. 9. Law of the Result - When you try to prove to someone that a machine won’t work, IT WILL!!! 10. Law of Bio-Mechanics - The severity of the itch is inversely proportional to the reach. 11. Law of the Theater & Hockey Arena - At any event, the people whose seats are furthest from the aisle, always arrives last. They are the ones who will leave their seats several times to go for food, beer, or the toilet and who leave early before the end of the performance or the game is over. The folks in the aisle seats come early, never move once, have long gangly legs or big bellies and stay to the bitter end of the performance. The aisle people also are very surly folk. 12. The Coffee Law - As soon as you sit down to a cup of hot coffee, your boss will ask you to do something which will last until the coffee is cold. 13. Murphy’s Law of Lockers - If there are only 2 people in a locker room, they will have adjacent lockers. 14. Law of Physical Surfaces - The chances of an open-faced jelly sandwich landing face down on a floor, are directly correlated to the newness and cost of the carpet or rug. 15. Law of Logical Argument - Anything is possible IF you don’t know what you are talking about. 16. Brown’s Law of Physical Appearance - If the clothes fit, they’re ugly. 17. Oliver’s Law of Public Speaking - A CLOSED MOUTH GATHERS NO FEET!!! 18. Wilson’s Law of Commercial Marketing Strategy - As soon as you find a product that you really like, they will stop making it. 19. Doctors’ Law - If you don’t feel well, make an appointment to go to the doctor, by the time you get there, you’ll feel better...but don’t make an appointment, and you’ll stay sick.

San Diego Fords ‘n Friends Picnic... by Randi MillerOur ragged group of nine really enjoyed the day of cruising down to the Ford and Friends Picnic on June 10. The San Diego Chapter is a great group of hospitable folks and throw a great picnic and get together.

As usual, Rich and I came trailing in late to Tommy’s parking lot and joined the others who were prompt and awaiting a fun day. Attending were, Mas and Dianne, Larry, It was great that Abe and Rudy rode in together, (missed Edith) Bill and Andrea, and Rich and myself. We had five trucks, (ALL red and black) representing Orange County Pickups Limited.

We ran careening down the freeway to the Penfold’s Restaurant in Temecula and were starving...as usual. Great food! We ate, had a pit stop, and jumped into our trusty steeds and away we ran. Rich was now no longer in the lead as he was deemed running too slow.

Upon our arrival, they put our trucks right up at the front of the park so we were seen by all as they arrived. There was a nice bit of shadein that spot and we got to sit and view all the cars and trucks coming and going all day. It’s a beautiful park. Very rural and lots of trees.

Lunch was tasty, with Polish and regular hot dogs which we all enjoyed with relish....and mustard and onions. Great vehicles on display. Saw many that we don’t see up our way. We all enjoyed our San Diego Pickup friends and their generous hospitality. Many thanks for all their efforts.

This is a really a relaxing fun day. Try to make it next year if you can. We want to represent Orange County Pickups in a big way!!!!

Randi

Editor’s Ramblings... thoughts and memoriesby Chris Travers

What can be said about a show like the 30th F-100 Western Nationals that somebody has not already said? Fantastic, interesting, outstanding, one-of-a-kind, over the top, and who knows what else. One thing for sure is that it is always memorable.

For me the memories are often about a specific vehicle or two, what the weather was like on the day of the event, who had a mechanical problem and things like that but the people that attend are always at the top of my list.

I often think back on the great people that I have met through events like the F-100 Western Nationals and get a big smile on my face. The memories always put me in my own “Happy Place”. • The good times of visiting with members from the other chapters of Pickups Limited and thinking that it sure would be great if we could get together more often • Seeing some of our long distance friends Will, Lynette, Chuck, and Shirley from Arizona • Welcoming our many vendors from near and far, reflecting on the sacrifices and stress they make to be with us. • Talking to Bill Lee on the phone is never the same is seeing him in person. Without Bill flagging me down one year at Cruisin for a Cure saying “YOU GOTTA PARK WITH US” I would have never found you guys... so yes, I’m his fault! • Meeting those that traveled from another country for the weekend to be with us like this years Long Distance Hauler Robert Nieto from Guanajuato, Mexico. THAT’S 1597.4 miles! (or 27 hr 37 min with traffic)How could a group of thoughts and memories about these people not put you in a happy place? Impossible

My thoughts also go out to long time F-100 Western Nationals attendees and members of Pickups Limited’s San Diego Chapter Brad and Jackie Romaine. Jackie has been battling cardiac problems for some time and experienced another episode as they were entering the gates to the show last week. Brad rushed her to the nearby Kaiser Hospital where they stabilized her. At last report she had been discharged and was doing fine but please keep these good folks in your thoughts.

DMV Newsletter

1801 I Street, Suite 100, Sacramento, CA 95811

Medical Conditions and Driving Safety Many health issues can impair driving - lapse of consciousness is a common one that can potentially cause great danger to you and other drivers on the road. Disorders characterized by lapses of con-sciousness can result from many different types of medical conditions.

Epilepsy is the most common of these disorders, and is defined as recurrent and unprovoked seizures. Sleep disorders can also manifest themselves as a loss of consciousness. In order to keep the road-ways safe, the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will take the appropriate actions when a driver has been diagnosed with a lapse of consciousness disorder, which may include license sus-pension, revocation or putting the driver on probation. Placing drivers on medical probation allows the DMV to continually monitor the drivers’ medical condition. There are two types of medical probations for drivers with lapse of consciousness disorders- Medical Probation Type II and Type III.

Placing a person on medical probation allows drivers with controlled epilepsy and other disorders characterized by a lapse of consciousness to continue driving while being monitored by the DMV. Once diagnosed, the driver needs to show control for at least three months to be qualified to be placed on medical probation to be able to continue driving. If the driver does not have control over their symp-toms, they may have their license revoked to eliminate the danger they pose to themselves, as well as other drivers.

Medical Probation Type IIMedical probation Type II is for drivers who have achieved three-to- five months of control over their sei-zures. The driver must provide consent for his or her physician to complete the Driver Medical Evalua-tion and submit it to the DMV as required.

Medical Probation Type IIIMedical probation Type III is for drivers who have achieved six months or more of control, but where a risk of another seizure may still exist due to other medical factors. Medical probation Type III requires the driver to regularly report the status of his or her disorder to the DMV by completing the Medical Probation Reporting form. The decision to place a driver on Medical probation Type III should be based on the driver’s medical history and reliability.

The decision to place a driver on Medical probation Type II or III is based on a combination of consider-ations, which may include:* Seizure type and severity* Medical and lifestyle history* The seizure-free period prior to the last episodeIn order for Medical Probation Type III to work effectively, the driver must be honest and forthcoming about any episodes they experience. It should not be granted if the driver has exhibited past evidence of noncompliance, withholding information from a physician or inconsistent statements.

No probation is needed for drivers who have achieved six or more months of control and who have no coexisting medical conditions that would aggravate the driver’s seizures.

The DMV has the authority to terminate or modify the conditions of probation whenever good cause ex-ists. If it appears that a driver’s lapse of consciousness disorder has become unstable or it is suspect-ed that the information reported is fraudulent, the driver will be requested to have his/her physician complete a Driver Medical Evaluation. If necessary, a reexamination will be scheduled or an immediate suspension of the driving privilege imposed. For more information on safety tips for those with lapse of consciousness disorder, visit www.DMV.ca.gov or call (916) 239-4617.

On March 24, 2012 Pickups Limited’s San Diego chapter visited the Campo Train Museum. They rode the old train from Campo to the USA - Mexico border and back. Ron Hangartner, the SD-PUL photog-rapher created the picture colleague of this visit that you see here. While we were in the gift shop I purchased a VERY KOOL circa 1930 MAP that shows the old Railroad line from San Diego to Campo via San Ysidro (my home town), Tijuana, Tecate and Campo.

As a kid growing up in San Ysidro I had no idea that the railroad that passed through our small border town crossed the border and then back across near Campo and was know as San Diego’s Impossible Railroad.

Here’s an interesting article on San Diego’s Impossible Railroad.http://www.sdrm.org/history/sda/history.html The Impossible Railroad - Intro cliphttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qySxscpAudE

Give Me A Brake...by Glenn Kerr

I Was Just Minding My Own Business... ReallyThere’s a Burger King in a shopping center on Beach Blvd. at Adams. Sometimes I go there to get a hamburger for lunch. Then I drive around to the back of the shopping center to a parking lot by the Newland House. It’s on a bluff looking east to Huntington Beach with Costa Mesa in the distance.

So, there I was one day eating my lunch, minding my own business, when this young woman comes running up to talk to me. Something I’ve noticed with classic vehicles. Strang-ers will just come up and start talking. It’s not a bad thing.

She introduced herself as Colleen with the Animal Assistance League of Orange County. Colleen said she was having lunch in the restaurant when I drove by. She came to invite me to their fund raiser / car show / chile cook off they were having

in that very same parking lot in a week. They really need-ed the funding to make it through summer.

We talk for a few minuets about the difficulty of getting people to come to a car show. She tells me they only have about 10 cars signed up so far and have room for fifty. To my self I’m thinking they’re in trouble. They need more cars. At the same time I’m telling myself I’m not interested in attending another car show and I’d like to finish my lunch.

We finish our conversation and I finish my lunch. As I drive back to work this benefit car show keeps rolling around in my head (there’s a lot of open space up there). Free food for car show participants. No entry fee for bringing a classic car. I really don’t have anything planned for the holiday weekend.

Maybe I’ll give some more thought.

The next day this thing is still on my mind. So I email those in the club that I have email address for, as well as a few other people who might be interested in going. The next thing I know there’s almost a dozen cars and trucks committed to go-ing. I even talked Terry into going. This is going to be fun.

It’s Going To Be A PartyOne of the things that appealed to Terry, and others, was the 1:00 start time for the event. No getting up at Oh Dark Thirty. We all meet at the Donut Store and leave at 12:30 to make the mile run to the Newland House. I still get a thrill seeing a line of F100’s going anywhere together.

I don’t think I lost anybody on the way. Even though it was only a mile, with me leading anything is possible. We arrive, get parked, get checked in, get our hand stamped for entry and get a hand full of food and drink tickets.

The chile samples were set up in the barn. The entertainment and more sampling booths on the lawn. There fare was, of

course, chile with about 10 different contestants. All of them were good. In addition, out side was cheese tasting, chocolate tasting, beer and wine sampling with hot dogs and hamburgers.

If that wasn’t enough, entertainer Phil Shane

performed songs from Elvis to Kid Rock and everything in between. He sang for almost four hours, non stop. If

you closed your eyes, and envisioned the art-ist who made a song famous, it could have been the real deal. Phil was great.

To top off a jam packed, fun filled afternoon, Mas and Dianne won a trophy for their truck. Way to go! What a great way to spend a Sat-urday afternoon. Good friends, good food and old Ford trucks.

As always, if you have any questions, please free to call me. And as always, if I don’t know the answer or can’t find one, I’ll make one up that sounds plausible.

meeting highlightsMonthly meetings are becoming events in their own right. The fact is that our Orange County Chapter of Pickups Limited is among the healthiest and most active chapters in the entire club. A typical meeting has grown to 35 in attendance and that always includes 2 or 3 curious guests. Everybody is always welcome to share in the guidance and activities of the Chapter and the friendships that are nurtured.

It is always an event when a new build is unveiled like this past June when Check

brought in his ‘56 that he had been thrash-ing on to make the F-100 Western Nation-als. The “Back Row” is always active weath-er it be receiving registration cards for the upcoming show or just being the typical “peanut gallery” and casting comments to the board. Glenn usually controls the air flow through the Ken Grody Ford service center which is our monthly home.

Early birds often meet for an early dinner at Ruby’s on Lincoln in Anaheim or Pat & Oscar’s in Buena Park around 5:00 on meeting nights, just because we can’t get enough of each other.

Don’t be shy... JOIN US!

We have all herd the term “life gets in the way” at one time or another. Basically it means that I was busy and didn’t have the time to do something or to get involved. Besides family obligations, work, or sickness, it often just means that we waned to get a bit more beauty sleep. We also like to use the excuse that our truck wasn’t ready to show. Mine is in the growing state of primer and it doesn’t stop me. Heck I’ll even drive to the dreaded Los Angeles County region... after all that’s where I live! Well don’t fall into that trap again this summer. Forget those lame excuses and get out there and have some fun. The growing number of trucks at these events is overwhelming.

There are tons of events going on around you every day in So Cal. Here are just a hand full of the events that I went to in the last 45 days.
