December 21.)

Christmas Thank You! I want to thank all

who gave of their time and efforts to make

the celebration of the birth of Christ at

both Holy Ghost and St. Stanislaus as

beautiful as they were. It is easy to think that it all

happens magically, but it takes a great deal of time and

effort to do the decorating, rehearse the music and

ceremonies and all the rest that is involved. I thank those

who donated to the special flower collection. I also want to

thank those of you who have remembered me in a special

way. I so appreciate your consideration and generosity.

All Masses for the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God will

be on Monday, January 1. At Holy Ghost they will be at 8

a.m. and 10 a.m. (half hour later for the earlier Mass to

give revelers a bit more sleep after the previous evening’s

festivities). At St. Stan’s the Masses will be at the usual

Sunday morning times of 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.

Mary, Mother of God: January 1, the

eighth day of Christmas, is always set aside

as a special solemnity to honor Mary,

Mother of God.

On the eighth day of His life, Jesus shed

His blood for the first time as He endured

circumcision (as required by Jewish religious

law for males). Mary, His mother, would

have been the one who nursed Jesus’ wound, repeatedly

washing off His blood during the next few days as the

infant Jesus healed.

This foreshadows Mary standing at the foot of the cross

decades later as He would shed His blood for our

salvation. Many of you have seen the statue of the Pieta in

which Mary holds the dead, bloody body of her Son Jesus.

Even after He dies, Mary treasured Jesus’ body by

cleaning off His blood. During her entire life, Mary was

devoted to the Precious Blood of Jesus. This was

dramatically portrayed a few years ago in the movie, “The

Passion of the Christ.”

In 2018 imitate Mary. Devote yourself to the Precious

Blood of Jesus. Receive the Eucharistic Jesus in Mass as

often as possible; but always in the state of grace after

regular confession.

Holy Ghost Centennial Banner: This beautiful replica of

our signature Holy Ghost choir loft window will be

displayed on the elevator wall in church throughout the

centennial year. I want to recognize and thank a relatively

new member of our parish, Jim Curran, who donated his

time, talent and materials to create this masterpiece. He is

also the artist responsible for creating the various seasonal

banners which have hung on the choir loft rail. Thank you,

Jim and may God reward your generosity!

A Note to Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion at

Both Parishes: Recently while I was distributing communion

at St. Stan’s a woman, whom I did not recognize, came

forward to receive, which she did. She then held out a

Kleenex tissue and said she wanted to take communion to

her father who was home sick. If you should encounter

something like that you should politely refuse as the person

should be known to be an extraordinary minister and

should have a proper pyx in which to carry the sacred host.

Also, when you are attending Mass and notice that

someone assigned has not shown up you should simply

come forward to take that person’s place.

A Note to Lectors and Others Making Announcements in

Church: Basic principles of public speaking tell us that we

always need to speak clearly, to project and to not drop

off the volume at the end of a sentence. This is particularly

important when announcing hymn numbers. People, such as

I, with hearing loss have difficulty understanding. Thank

you for being attentive to this request.

A Note to “Anonymous” from St. Stan’s: When people

don’t sign their letters or have a return address such things

go unread into the shredder. I hope you feel better,

though, about whatever it was.

Memories: ... In November, the month of

the All Saints/All Souls holy day, we

honored and remembered those who

have died and been buried from Holy

Ghost with our traditional candle lighting

ceremony at all the Masses on a

designated memorial weekend. This

practice began in the early 90’s under

our Pastor Fr. Mike Grewe’s leadership.

Fr. Mike suggested that the Liturgy

Committee begin coordinating with

Calvary Cemetery to arrange for a Mass

to be celebrated in November for all

those from Holy Ghost who had died the

previous year. The annual memorial

Masses began at Calvary Cemetery’s

mausoleum and were attended by family

members of those who have passed, the

eighth graders from our school who were

bused to Calvary and a few parishioners

who worked with our liturgies.

After a few years a decision was

made to make the beautiful memorial

open to all in the parish by doing a

memorial each year at the weekend

Masses in the form of the reading of the

names and candle lighting ceremony that

we currently do.
