This cross over bridge is an accident waiting to happen. It is used by school children every day. A call for assistance is made to all the concrete and building companies in area. Draaikraal is on the Roossenekal road and the bridge is used by many mine employees too. A pensioner of Draaikraal brought

this to our attention and we hope that everyone will take hands to make this ‘monster bridge’ a safe crossing, especially for the kids. It is extremely dangerous to use.

Jock of the Bushveld - a legend that continues today

ock of the Bushveld is a true legend. The Mpumalanga Heritage Group followed his route earlier this month. J

The story of Jock was told by his owner Lowveld transport rider Sir Percy Fitzpatrick who used the old transport route from Lydenburg to Mozambique (Delgoa Bay) as the background of his book. The book highlights almost forgotten wagon routes across the Lowveld. Some of the routes can still be seen on aerial photos.Dr Gerrit Haarhoff was one of the enthusiast that tried to find the original wagon routes.Dr Haaroff and Marius Bakkes (Mpumalanga Heritage Group) placed the route markers with GPS co-ordinates on a map and marked important places on the route.The Heritage group was joined by Sir Percy Fitzpatrick's great grandson amongst others to follow the original wagon route over three days. The book tells of Fitzpatrick's travels with his dog, Jock, a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, during the 1880s, when he worked as a storeman, prospector's assistant, journalist and ox-wagon transport-rider in the Bushveld region of the Transvaal (then the South African Republic). FitzPatrick took one of his companion dogs from a litter of puppies with him when he decided to go and explore the Lowveld further. He decided to stick with the little weakling of the litter. He called him Jock and it seemed as if the puppy knew that Fitzpatrick was his master from day one. He even followed him home without any coaching. Jock was very loyal towards Percy, and brave.Jock of the Bushveld was first published in 1907 when it became an instant best seller and a local classic. Since then it has never been out of print and it has been the subject for at least one great South African film. There is also a statue dedicated to this most faithful companion and it stands in front of the Barberton Town Hall in Mpumalanga.

Fitzpatrick later recounted these adventures as bedtime stories to his four children. Rudyard Kipling, a good friend of Fitzpatrick, also took part in these story-telling evenings and eventually persuaded him to collect these tales in book form. Illustrations for the book were done by Edmund Caldwell, a brother of Mary Tourtel, creator of Rupert Bear. The book was first published in 1907 and had an extremely warm reception, being reprinted four times in that year alone. Since then it has achieved the status of a classic South African book and has been also widely read abroad – more than one hundred editions have been printed and it has been translated into Afrikaans, Dutch, French, Xhosa and Zulu, amongst others. Jock permanently lost his hearing when a kudu cow kicked him. This is attributed as one of the main reasons he died, as he could not hear Tom Barnett when he called him, and was mistakenly shot, because he was thought to be the dog killing chickens on the farm (when Jock had meanwhile already killed the other intruding dog). The Mpumalanga Heritage Group has started to make new route markers from cement. This will make it easier for the broader public to follow the ancient route.

A ‘concerned citizen’ from Burgersfort noticed a few things wrong in town and wrote the following letter to the Highlands Panorama News: I wish to warn all motorist and public making use of the road between Kruis street and the Main road Dirk Winterbach Street between the taxi rank areas on the stretch of road from the Boxer Supermarket area.

thOn the morning of 12 March 2016 round about 12h55 am I was just one more victim like so many other's that got robbed at the robot corner Kruis street and Dirk Winterbach Street.Waiting at the red robot our car was approached by an unidentified man begging for cigarettes from my wife, I was sitting in the passenger seat of the car and showed this man to move away from my wife's side of the driver's side.

ndUnnoticed by me a 2 unidentified man appeared from nowhere on my side of the car and force himself in the open window grabbing my jewelry from my neck, I jumped from my car chasing this man up to ACE hardware when he disappeared amongst the shacks behind Checker's shopping centre.My concern about this problem of robbing innocent motorists

and public on a daily basis, is that it has been happening for years. Traffic problems in this section of road remain. NO CONTROL in any way, taxis breaking the law causing traffic congestion Pedestrians jamming up sidewalks, WHERE ARE THE AUTHORITIES (SAPD-TRAFFIC OFFICIALS – MUNICIPALITIES ) No Law!These incidents are going to cost somebody their life as it already did in the past and will very soon happen again if the local law authorities don't get their act together soon. Why is there a lack of law enforcement in Burgersfort? One answer is that criminals are

bribing law enforcement officials.I am asking higher authorities to step in. This is just one more town with major problems because officials and authorities are not doing what they are paid to do, that is so simple! Please get off your chairs, out of your offices and out of shopping malls and control your town!

EK het verlede Woensdag Reinet Bell se afleweringsroete na Burgersfort en Steelpoort gedoen, omdat sy met die kort week besig was met kliënte. Ek was lanklaas daar en die toestand van die paaie het my aangenaam verras. Die Lydenburg / Burgersfort R37 is nou ’n pragtige pad en ’n plesier om te ry.Byna al Burgersfort se strate is herstel. Jy kan feitlik

enige plek in dié dorp ry en die strate is g o e d . D i e v e r k e e r d a a r b l y skrikwekkend en die dorp is deurmekaar uitgelê, maar jy hoef nie vir slaggate uit te swaai nie. Ek dink ek het in totaal so vyf getel. Daar was wel ’n klompie waterlekke in die strate.Steelpoort was eweneens net so ’n verassing. Die hoofroete deur die dorp is nou rybaar. Etlike geboue is opgeknap en nuwe besighede was hier en daar te sien. Die enigste totale gemors is die kort stukkie by die spoor naby Olifantspoortjie op die pad tussen Steelpoort en die R37. Daardie pad moet aandag kry aangesien die res

daarvan nou ook uitmekaar val.En dan kom jy terug in Lydenburg. Mens moet seker bly wees hulle doen nou iets aan die strate, maar die metodiek is heeltemaal verkeerd. Die dorp is nou letterlik moer toe.Waarom die hele dorp se strate opgrawe? Waarom kan straat vir straat nie gedoen word nie? Ek aanvaar dat die teerwerk in meervoude van elke vrag teer gedoen moet word, maar die hele dorp op een slag omploeg? Nee wat. Wat gebeur as die kontrakteur wegraak of die geld opraak, soos met die waterwerke, waar die hele dorp vol oop gate is, wat nie toegegooi en herstel word nie.Nee, ons is baie bly oor die werk mense, maar doen asseblief julle beplanning ’n bietjie beter. En kom maak die gate toe waar waterlekke herstel is.

VIR 'n fraksie van 'n sekonde oorweeg ek dit om met 'n glaslepel daaruit te skep. Die glas kon tog nie met die hele inhoud gemeng het nie. Maar dan tik ek myself op die vingers en besef die absurdheid daarvan. Die nuwe blatjang bottel lê in skerwe op die teëls. En die bruinerige-konfytagtige-taaierige-gemors is pragtig uitgesprei op my skoon vloer. Ek het net klaar opgeskep en soos baie mense weet 'n skeppie blatjang kan die meeste wegneemgeregte tuisgemaak laat proe. Dis altans my opinie. Dit is baie rampspoedig hoe goed net op die verkeerde tyd wil breek. Of vice versa. Soos die oond oor Paasnaweek. Wat ek laat regmaak het, het Saterdagoggend ‘word die krag ‘getrip’ net toe die paptert oond toe moet gaan. As mens al die gebreekte bottels, panne, bakke, blompotte, glase, karre, Tv's, ketels, gedoentes en allerlei wat al gebreek het in jou lewe bymekaar sit sal 'n aansienlike stapel verrys. Soms skud ek net my kop oor goed wat kan verkeerd gaan en breek, selfs vloekwoorde beskryf soms nie die ware gevoel daaroor nie. Te midde van padwoede wat hoogty vier ry ek doodluiters in 'n besige straat in Lydenburg af. Vir so 'n ou klein dorpie kan die mense darem baie verkeersreëls oortree. My toeter begin ongenadiglik en buite beheer alarm maak. Motoriste kyk verergd na die motor wat hulle so ongeskik vermaan. Ek is nie bang om my toeter te gebruik nie. Mens moet deesdae so versigtig ry. Ek het nou die dag buite die dorp op alles moontlik afgekom. Eerstens het ’n trop skape met behulp van die toeter netjies teruggestap na die gras en gaan wei, nie op die teer nie. Wie kan nou sê skape het nie ore nie. En dan is daar die gevaarlike koedoes langs die pad. Ja-waarlik. Dit moes nogal 'n eienaardige prentjie gewees het... die rooikop in die klein wit motortjie met haar een hand in die lug en die ander volstoom op die toeter wat onophoudelik amok maak. Maar die koedoes, skape en ape het eerder agter die bosse gaan wegkruip toe ek verby is.Van die boosaardige koedoes wat ons gaan aanval tot die taai blatjanggemors met glasstukke tussenin... haal net diep asem. Paasnaweek is darem nou verby.

Hulle het uit papier gehardloop en moes wag dat mense van Sabie / Graskop (nou nog onduidelik) vir hulle bring. By navraag hoekom hulle nie betyds bestel het nie: “We don’t have money and this department will be taken over by province from the 1st of April.”

Die publiek is gevra om na twintig minute terug te kom en toe hulle na ’n halfuur terug gaan was hul antwoord om oor nog ’n halfuur terug te kom. Gelukkig het die publiek hakke in die grond gegooi en besluit om te wag. Toe die papier na sowat ’n uur daarna arriveer moes dit eers getel en onderverdeel word tussen die drie kassiere, wat toe eers die rekenaars moes aansit en aanteken. Half elf is die mense

wat heel voor in die ry was, eers daar uit. Hopelik sal dit beter gaan as Provinsiaal by die departement oorneem.

ELKE Paassondag, vir die afgelope ses jaar, durf Lydenburg en omgewing se Christene die Jesus-koppie op die Longtompas aan om die son te sien opkom. Vanjaar was dit nie anders nie. Sowat 150 mense, jonk en oud, was teen 06:00 die oggend by die kruis byeen om God te loof en na die diens deur past. According to a 2007 survey of 2 000 agents conducted by HomeGain in the US, an online real estate marketing site, an investment of around $500 or R8 000 in landscaping could bring a return of four times that. This could make a significant difference in the price. 3. Let in the light Lighting, the number one item on the 2007 HomeGain survey, which includes everything from a dimmer switch to the increasingly popular sun tubes, noticeably enhances a home's appeal. Use reflective material to funnel natural light from a globe-capped hole cut in a rooftop, down through a ceiling fixture into a room. Ariel says sunlight is great, and moonlight is even better - natural light is your best option and will add value. Investing in maintenance and repairs is not only money wise but could also be crucial to a sale.A few other ways to light things up include fixing broken panes, making sure the windows are open

and installing lights that use motion detectors that turn themselves off. Ariel says remember that high wattage bulbs make small spaces feel larger, and soft lighting brings warmth to empty spaces. 4. Don't put off care and maintenance Before thinking about an expensive upgrade for your kitchen, address the basics, he says. Homeowners should insulate, repair plumbing leaks, replace rusty rain gutters, inspect the fireplace and septic system, replace or repair leaky windows, install storm doors and weed the flower beds. These kinds of fixes go a long way toward value. People think they have to put in a lot of money to see a big difference, but they really don't. Investing in maintenance and repairs is not only money wise but could also be crucial to a sale. 5. Go green Research published by The Appraisal Journal estimates that energy savings add 20 times the annual savings to the value of your property. Energy savers make your house more desirable, says Ariel. When renovating, he says consider greening your home because now, for the first time in five years, buyers are asking about the utilities. 6. Home begins at the front door Don't underestimate the power of a front door. Many people make up their minds in the first 7 seconds of entering a house. Ariel says surveyed agents recommend a working door bell, and don't forget an overhang such as an awning or portico above the front door. If you don't have a way out of the rain or shelter from the sun while you're fumbling for your keys, you're missing out. 7. What's under your feet?

Don't undervalue the materials you're standing on. Ariel says 94% of real estate professionals recommend spending money on floors. But it doesn't have to cost a lot of money, it just needs to look good. Small projects with a big impact include repairing broken tiles, patching damaged floor boards and tossing out wall-to-wall carpeting. In some cases, however, a new floor is in order. Let's face it, he says an ugly floor is an eye sore, and any self respecting buyer will walk away from a house due to the finishes. A tight economy means that buyers are looking for value for money, and an ugly or damaged floor is hard to hide. 8. Easy bath upgrades Agents say spiffing up the kitchen and bath is a sure bet for adding value to your home. These kinds of improvements can get expensive. Renovation if you're trying to spend as little as

possible before putting a house up for sale. But some upgrades are cheap, easy and fast, especially when it comes to the bathroom. 9. Neutral wall colours If you're getting ready to put a house on the market, don't allow walls with chipped paint to go unmaintained. If you need to do more than just a touch up, Ariel says choose neutral colors. He says get out of your personal taste as buyers want to be able to project their own ideas onto a space - and sellers can help with toned-down wall colour. 10. Get a durable exterior wall finish: It goes without saying that if your house looks bad, with cracks, mould, bald pebbledash etc., it will lose a significant part of its value.
