AUST Communication Arts students have formed strong relationships with the industry with multiple agencies. This has enabled them to secure jobs after graduating or even before. In this respect, the Communication Arts Department has recently signed three Memorandums of Understanding with Mink Advertising Agency; GTonics Agency and Brandem Co. to ensure a future for their students. The agreements were signed by Mr. Moe Menkara; Ms. Gwendoline Bou Jawde and Mr. Ghaleb Kassab, the owners of the three agencies, and AUST’s President Mrs. Hiam Sakr, in the presence of the Chairperson of the Communication Arts Department Dr. George Farha and faculty member Ms. Aline Gaegae. These MOU are to help the communication arts, graphic design and advertising students find jobs and internships opportunities. AUST had signed, three years ago, six cooperation and exchange agreements with Université Catholique de Lille. The first document signed by President Sakr of AUST and President Georgini of UCL specified the rules and procedures under which the two partners will cooperate. The remaining five agreements were with specific schools and departments which cover practically all majors that AUST offers. This year, AUST welcomed a delegation from Université Catholique de Lille (France), Dr. Céline Blondeau, Evelyne Litton and Elise Millois, representatives of the Faculty of Business, Economics and Sciences (FGES), Engineering School (ISEN), and the European School of Political and Social Sciences (ESPOL) respectively. The objective of this visit is to get acquainted with AUST and its founders, faculty members and students. The delegation was welcomed by the President Hiam Sakr, Vice President Dr. Riad Sakr, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Aziz Barbar, Dean of the Faculty of Business and Economics, Dr. Robert Gharios, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Dr. Roger Achkar and Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Dr. Zouhair Attieh at the President’s Office. They were then given a tour of the University. More than 30 students have benefited from this agreement that has proved its success and benefits; accordingly, the agreement has been renewed. Another objective of the visit is to prepare for the International Credit Mobility (ICM) Erasmus + Project, and to investigate new tracks of collaboration, such as double degrees, joint research… Both institutions would also like to increase the number of visiting teaching faculties and students in all disciplines. L’Université Catholique de Lille is a private university that enrolls over 20,000 students and is situated in a region that boasts several universities and research centers with a huge student body of 150,000. Students wishing to benefit from this opportunity would need to have a good command of the French language in undergraduate courses. Around 50% of graduate courses are offered in English. AUST students desiring to study at UCL will be glad to know that tuition fees compare favorably with that of AUST; of course, the extra costs of room and board will have to be borne by the student. It is noteworthy to mention that UCL cooperates with Villanova University (USA) with which AUST has a strong relationships, and from which several AUST students have received graduate degrees in Engineering and Computer Science. “The Lebanese brain is more important than oil and gas because it's the future of the country," Hariri said in an address he gave at the launching occasion of “Summer of Innovation 2018”. "We seek a Lebanon with high technological evolution. A Lebanon in which its youth will stay," he added.“Summer of Innovation 2018” event witnessed success with programs geared towards the youth, with a focus on innovation, technology, entrepreneurship and creativity. In collaboration with IDEAS,

the Office of the Prime Minister selected 6 interns to help run this project. AUST’ ICT MS student, Ahmad Deeb was one of these selected students.Throughout the summer, Ahmad spent his time between BDD and the Grand Serail to work on organizing entrepreneurial events that are to provide the youth of Lebanon with better job opportunities. Ahmad put to proper use his computer and technology skills learnt at AUST to ensure the success of the projects he worked on.The aim of the program was to enable

Lebanese innovators to grow by providing them a scalable testing ground to prove their concepts, access top-tier potential clients, and providing them an efficient and friendly business environment while having a positive social impact on the country. The Summer of Innovation Project ended with an honorary ceremony for the interns who helped make this project a reality. Prime Minister Hariri distributed certificates to the six interns and congratulated them on their effort well done. AUST in its turn would like to congratulate Ahmad Deeb.

The Department of Mathematics at AUST underwent the Early Edge SAT Program training with Princeton Review. Instructors at AUST, together with instructors of the American High School (AHS), attended a one day workshop, at the end of which participants received a certificate of attestation that proves their status as trainers of the Early Edge SAT Program. Aligned with AUST’s SAT preparatory courses for students following the freshman, the Early Edge SAT Program complements these students’ development, and reinforces basic skills which are needed to perform well on high-

stake admission tests, like the SAT.This training came as a result of AUST’s investment in cutting-edge technology, where instructors are constantly innovating to deliver the most effective tools available across multiple platforms. The university tries to secure for its freshman students real-time, adaptive practice tests and drills so that they may focus on the test preparation, spend time efficiently and maximize their score potential. This training was followed by a visit of Princeton Review’s Regional Manager to AUST to present the university with a recognition certification.

Dr. Roger Achkar, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at AUST participated in the 6th International Symposium on Computational and Business Intelligence, ISCBI 2018, Basel, Switzerland. The conference was held at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern.Dr. Achkar, represented AUST at the conference, and presented his paper entitled “Comparison of BPA-MLP and LSTM-RNN for Stocks Prediction”. The paper presents the work of an MS Neural Networks project done at AUST- Ashrafieh. It is co-authored by Fady Elias-Sleiman, Hasan Ezzidine and Nourhane Haidar. The aim as well as objective of ISCBI 2018 is to present the latest research and results of scientists working in the

fields related to Computational and Business Intelligence. This Symposium provides opportunities for the delegates to exchange new ideas and application through face-to-face discussions, to establish business or research relations and to find global partners for future collaborations. The outcome of ISCBI 2018 yields significant contributions to the knowledge in the emerging areas of Computational & Business Intelligence. The paper was published in the IEEE Xplore and Computer Society Digital Library. Abstract—Neural networks is considered one of the most developed concept in artificial intelligence, due to its ability to solve complex computational tasks, and its efficiency to find

solutions. There is a wide range of applications that adopt this technique, one of which is in the financial investment issues. This paper presents an approach to predict stock market ratios using artificial neural networks. It considers two different techniques- BPA-MLP and LSTM-RNN- their potential, and their limitations.Tests were conducted on different data sets, such as FacebookTM stocks, GoogleTM stocks, and BitcoinTM stocks. We achieve a best case accuracy of 97% for MLP algorithm, and 99.5% for LSTM algorithm. While the results appear to be promising, a web interface is presented in order to accept a certain amount of money, and accordingly checks the best stock to invest in.

Imaging techniques have revolutionized our understanding of the events that happen at the minute level such as in an organism’s cell. Discovering and optimizing imaging techniques have become the subject of extensive competition in the field of Biotechnology; educating scientists has become a must. Throughout his PhD in Physical Chemistry and his Postdoc in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy, Dr. Elias Akoury trained and specialized in the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy

at the Ludwig-Maximilians University of Munich (LMU) in Germany. He was invited by the Graduate Program in the Faculty of Health Sciences to explain the importance of imaging techniques in identifying molecular structures and characterizing molecule-molecule interactions. During his lecture, he described the most revolutionizing imaging techniques used to identify the exact three-dimensional structures of molecules. He also detailed the system invented by Jacques Dubochet (University of Lausanne,

Switzerland), Joachim Frank (Columbia University, New York, USA), and Richard Henderson (MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge, UK) who were awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2017 “for developing cryo-electron microscopy for the high-resolution structure determination of biomolecules in solution”. Dr. Elias Akoury’s lecture is a demonstration of the power of research in uncovering the most hidden events and structures in an organism’s system.

Natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, and floods can often come at the least expected time. Others, such as hurricanes and cyclones are increasing in severity and destruction. Typically, the poor are the worst hit for they have the least resources to cope and rebuild. On October 16th, 2018, a workshop on “Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience” was organized by the AUST UNESCO club under the International Affairs Department, and conducted by the UNESCO to educate the students on the scientific factors behind such disasters, what should be done, how college students can raise awareness among people and how they can play a dynamic role in society. The workshop hosted Geologist Specialists Dr. Shady Abdullah and Dr. Rached Jomma who provided a two-hour session to inform students of the causes of earthquakes and floods, what are the scientific measures that are done to study such disasters, and how they are predicted; however, both speakers emphasized the fact that no one can predict or detect a natural disaster soon enough to prevent it or take the right precautious, because the predictions done based on frequencies and magnitudes would be minutes before the disaster. Videos and pictures were displaced to show the students the level of destruction such disaster can do,

highlighting that countries today are not only connected economically but also naturally where a natural disaster doesn’t differentiate between a country or another but hits everyone. Yet what differs from one country and another is the precautious measures they take in case of a disaster, where both governments and private institutions must implement a strategy of infrastructure and buildings that can survive such disasters. The workshop stressed on the role of youth in primary response phase when faced with a natural disaster, by which it raised student’s awareness of their potentials and developed an understanding of the risks encountered during natural disasters in Lebanon. It also informed the students how Lebanon is not well structured nor well planned to survive a natural disaster; thus, their role is crucial in raising awareness and working on projects with municipalities and international organizations to help Lebanon survive any natural disasters. The UNESCO workshop on natural disaster quoted Petra Nemcova who said “We cannot stop natural disaster but we can arm ourselves with knowledge: so many lives wouldn’t have to be lost if there was enough disaster preparedness!”

At a time when the Apple Watch is miles ahead of any other smartwatch and Google’s Wear OS is struggling for relevance, launching a new smartwatch seems like a foolhardy idea. That’s why I like Huawei’s alternative approach of building a semi-smart watch, essentially a fitness-tracking wristband with the shape and look of a wristwatch, with its Watch GT. You don’t lose much relative to Wear OS, the Watch GT will still receive notifications from your phone, but what you gain with it is a hugely impressive battery life of two weeks under typical use.Huawei did something similar a couple of years ago with the Huawei Fit, which was built around a monochrome touchscreen and was rated to last for six days on a charge. The Huawei Watch GT upgrades pretty much everything from that 2016 fitness tracker. The display is now a color 1.39-inch OLED panel with a DLC (diamond-like carbon) coating on the glass and a ceramic bezel. The case of the watch is made of 316L steel. The Watch GT also has GPS, which the Fit lacked, and it can track your sleep as well as runs, cycling, swimming, and, with the help of a built-in altimeter, hiking.Like the Fit, Huawei’s new watch also supports continuous heart rate tracking. Huawei promises that its AI optimizations will help deliver more accurate heart rate readings, with the Watch GT being able to detect when it isn’t worn in an ideal position to get an accurate measurement and then correcting the readings it gets from the optical sensor.

Built around Huawei’s in-house LiteOS, the Watch GT is designed to be extremely power-efficient. It has a dual-chip architecture, with one chip tailored for low-power tasks when the user is sedentary and a more powerful chip responsible for keeping up with more dynamic tasks. Huawei says that you’ll get two weeks’ worth of battery life out of this watch if you keep heart rate monitoring on and exercise for up to 90 minutes per week. In a worst-case scenario, where you might decide to keep the screen and GPS constantly on, the Watch GT will keep up with your manic workout session for a maximum of 22 hours. And if you decide to be frugal with its use, avoiding GPS and only keeping the heart rate monitor and notifications turned on, you can go as long as 30 days before having to recharge. There’s no shortage of fitness-tracking wearables on the market right now, so Huawei will surely be aware it’s entering a crowded market. Even so, the very familiar look of its Watch GT, along with the watch’s minimal thickness of 10.6mm, should prove enticing to people who want all that health data without having to wear an obviously sporty gadget on their wrist. Huawei’s market research told it as much, and that’s why the company’s answer to Fitbit looks so far removed from the usual Fitbit design. The Huawei Watch GT will be available in two versions. The Sport version will retail for €199, while the classic model will be slightly more at €249. Release dates for the two watches are yet to be announced.

AUST Awareness Campaigns Towards Saving Lives

Unique Sports at AUST

As September and October are significant months in the healthcare awareness calendar, the S.A.O. team organized two events that contributed to raising awareness. On October 18, CHAMPS FUND dedicated the day to check students’ hearts (specifically athletes) in block M, GF. Sponsored by AUBMC, CHAMPS FUND is charitable fund established in 2014 as a

dedication for the young athlete, Hicham El Hage, who had a cardiac arrest on the field. You probably heard of Michele Hajjal’s fight with lymphoma cancer. The S.A.O. dedicated a day to raise funds to help her along her journey. The students were very responsive and donated despite the bad economic status in Lebanon. Fortunately, the amount

needed for her surgery was fully raised and now all Michele needs is prayer and good luck on her trip to the United States.A healthcare event will also take place in the Garden during the first week of November. Its purpose is to raise awareness with the help of different NGOs, and entertaining shows, games, and competitions.

The Sports and Activities Office at AUST proudly presents its unique teams for students interested in activities such as: horseback riding, swimming, tennis, crazy dunkers, and cheerleading. A salsa session is also offered every Monday and Wednesday from 2:30 P.M. until 3:30 P.M. at the SAO at AUST; for the ladies, the university started basketball, football, and futsal teams separate from the ones for men. And for a special twist, a mixed volleyball team trains in Sacré-Coeur in Gemmayze every Thursday at 6 P.M. For the students who are interested in running the fun run (8K) in the Marathon on November 11 (free of charge), and for any inquiry and registration in any team, do head to the sports’ office in Block M, Ground Floor. Our upcoming football match between AUST and BAU will be held in ANSAR, on Monday, November 5, at 7:30 P.M. Your voices and cheers will surely excite our beloved team members into winning. We hope to see you there!
