Setting Surface ControlsModels with Ceramic Glass Cooktop

About the Ceramic Glass CooktopThe ceramic cooktop has radiant surface elements locatedbelow the surface of the glass. The design of the ceramiccooktop outlines the area of the surface element underneath.Make sure the diameter of the pan matches the diameter ofthe element outline on the cooktop (See Figure 1).Heat is transferred up through the surface of the cooktop tothe cookware. Only flat-bottom cookware should be used. The type and size of cookware, the number of surfaceelements in use and their settings, are all factors that willaffect the amount of heat that will spread to areas beyond thesurface elements. The areas surrounding the elements maybecome hot enough to cause burns.

About the Radiant Surface ElementsThe element temperature rises gradually and evenly. As thetemperature rises, the element will glow red. To maintain theselected setting, the element will cycle on and off. Theheating element retains enough heat to provide a uniform andconsistent heat during the off cycle. For efficient cooking, turn off the element several minutes before cooking iscomplete. This will allow residual heat to complete thecooking process.

Locations of the Radiant Surface Elementsand ControlsYour range is equipped with radiant surface elements withdifferent wattage ratings. The ability to heat food quicker andin larger volumes increases as the element wattage increases.

The radiant surface elements are located on the cooktop asfollows:

Model A (See Figures 1):- A 6 inch radiant elements located at the right rear position;- A 6 / 9 / 12 inch Triple element located at the right front

position;- A 7 inch radiant element located at the center rear position;- Two 8 inch radiant elements located at both the left front

and rear positions. Located between the left front and rearelements is a Bridge radiant element.

NOTE: Please read detailed instructions for ceramicglass cooktop cleaning in the General Care & Cleaningsection and Before You Call checklist section of thisUse and Care Guide.

NOTE: Radiant elements have a limiter that allows theelement to cycle on and off, even at the HI setting. Thishelps to prevent damage to the ceramic smooth top.Cycling at the HI setting is normal and can occur if thecookware is too small for the radiant element or if thecookware bottom is not flat (Refer to page 14 underSelecting Surface Cooking Cookware).

NOTE: Due to the high intensity of heat generated bythe surface elements, the glass surface will turn greenwhen the element will be turned off. This phenomenonis normal and the glass will come back to its originalwhite color after it has completely cooled down. (Whiteglass cooktops only).

Operating the Bridge Surface ElementThe cooktop is equipped with a “BRIDGE” surface element located at theleft cooktop position (See Figure 1). Indicator lights on the control panelare used to indicate what portions of the Bridge element will heat. TheBridge element begins with the left FRONT position only (Figure 2) andwhen selected with the +BRIDGE element (Figure 3) it will provide acombination of 2 heating surfaces. When set for ALL 3 element positionsthe left rear element is added for a total combination of 3 even heatingsurfaces (See Figure 4).

The Bridge element is designed for rectangular or oval shaped cookware. The griddle that is supplied with this appliance should be used with theBridge element ONLY. For round shaped cookware, the left frontelement may be used as a single element.

To Operate the Bridge Surface Element:1. Place correctly sized cookware on the radiant surface element.

4. Touch the Bridge element HI pad once to turn ON the power level HI

or Lo pad once for Lo (See Fig. 4). The Hot Surface indicator light will

turn ON when the element becomes hot.

5. Each touch of the Lo or HI pad will decrease or increase the

power level by 1/2 from 9.0 through 3.0. Simmer power levels between 3.0 and1.0 will decrease or increase by .2 increments. Lo is the lowest power levelavailable. Note: The power level may be adjusted at any time while the elementis ON.

6. When cooking has been completed touch the ON/OFF pad once to turn the

element OFF.

Each surface element provides a constant amount of heat at each setting. Aglowing red surface heating area extending beyond the bottom edge of thecookware indicates the cookware is too small for the surface heating area.

Note: The Hot Surface Indicator light will come on when the ON/OFF pad is

pressed and will continue to glow until the glass cooktop has cooled down toa moderate level. The light may remain on even though the controls are turnedOFF. See the table on page 9, for recommended surface cooking settings.

Radiant surface elements may appear to have cooled after they have been turned off. A hot surface indicatorlight will come on and will continue to glow until the glass cooktop has cooled down to a moderate level. The glass surfacemay still be hot and burns may occur if the glass surface is touched before the indicator light has turned off.

Do not place aluminum foil or plastic items such as salt and pepper shakers, spoon holders or plasticwrappings on top of the range when it is in use. These items could melt or ignite. Potholders, towels or wooden spoonscould catch fire if placed too close to the surface elements.

Note: If all 3 Bridge elements are selected, any previous power level setting for theLEFT REAR element will be changed tothe power level setting for the Bridge.

Surface Cooking

Figure 2

Selecting SurfaceCooking CookwareCookware should have flat bottoms thatmake good contact with the entire surfaceheating element. Check for flatness byrotating a ruler across the bottom of thecookware (See Figure 1). Be sure to followthe recommendations for using cookwareas shown in Figure 2.

Note: The size and type of cookware usedwill influence the setting needed for bestcooking results.

Cookware Material typesThe cookware material determines how evenly and quickly heat istransferred from the surface element to the pan bottom. The mostpopular materials available are:

Figure 1

Before Setting Oven Controls This range has a fan that will turn “ON” and “OFF” by itself to keep the electronics cool. It may

continue to run after the range has been turned “OFF” but may also stop immediately to turn “ON” after awhile.

ALUMINUM - Excellent heat conductor. Some types of food will cause it to darken (Anodized aluminum cookware resistsstaining & pitting). If aluminum pans slide across the ceramic glass cooktop, they may leave metal marks which willresemble scratches. Remove these marks immediately.

COPPER - Excellent heat conductor but discolours easily. May leave metal marks on ceramic glass (see Aluminum above).

STAINLESS STEEL - Slow heat conductor with uneven cooking results. Is durable, easy to clean and resists staining.

CAST IRON - A poor heat conductor however will retain heat very well. Cooks evenly once cooking temperature is reached. Not recommended for use on ceramic cooktops.

PORCELAIN-ENAMEL on METAL - Heating characteristics will vary depending on base material. Porcelain-enamelcoating must be smooth to avoid scratching ceramic cooktops.

GLASS - Slow heat conductor. Not recommended for ceramic cooktop surfaces because it may scratch the glass.

Removing and Replacing Oven RacksTo remove, pull the rack forward until it stops. Lift upfront of rack and slide out. To replace, fit the rack ontothe guides on the oven walls. Tilt the front of the rackupward and slide the rack back into place.

Oven Vent LocationThe oven vent is located at right side of the front paneland visible when the oven door is open. When the oven ison, hot air is released through the vents. This venting isnecessary for proper air circulation in the oven and goodbaking results.

Setting Warmer Drawer Control (If Equipped)

Arranging Warmer (Warm & Ready™) Drawer RackPositionsThe rack can be used in 2 ways:• In the upright position to allow low profile food items to be placed both

under and on top of the rack (for example, rolls or biscuits on top of therack and a casserole dish underneath).

• In the downward position to allow you to place light weight food itemsand empty dishware (for example, rolls or pastries and dinner plates) onthe rack.

Set the Warmer Drawer Rack in either position as shown below (Figure1).

Operating the Warmer DrawerThe purpose of the Warmer Drawer is to keep hot cooked foods at servingtemperature. Always start with hot food. It is not recommended to heat coldfood in the Warmer Drawer. All food placed in the Warmer Drawer should becovered with a lid or aluminum foil to maintain quality. Do not use plasticwrap to cover food. Plastic may melt onto the drawer and be verydifficult to clean. Use only utensils and cookware recommended for ovenuse in the Warmer Drawer.

Always use potholders or oven mitts when removing foodfrom the Warmer Drawer as cookware and plates will be hot and you can beburned.

Warmer Drawer Temperature SelectionRecommended Warmer Drawer settings table is shown aside. If a particularfood is not listed, start with the MED setting. If more crispness is desired, remove the lid or aluminum foil from the food. Most foods can be kept atserving temperatures on the MED setting. When a combination of foods areto be kept warm (for instance, meat with 2 vegetables and rolls), use the HIsetting. To avoid heat loss, do not open the Warmer Drawer while in use.

Cooking Informations

BroilingBroiling is a method of cooking tender cuts of meat by direct heat under the broil element of the oven.

PreheatingPreheating is suggested when searing rare steaks. (Remove the broiler pan beforepreheating. Foods will stick if placed on hot metal.) To preheat, set the oven control(s) toBROIL as instructed in the Electronic Oven Control Guide. Wait for the element to becomered-hot, usually about 2 minutes. Preheating is not necessary when broiling meats well-done.

To BroilBroil on one side until the food is browned; turn and cook on the second side. Season andserve. Always pull rack out to the “stop” position before turning or removing food.

Determining Broiling TimesBroiling times vary, so watch the food closely. Time not only depends on the distance fromthe element, but on the thickness and aging of meat, fat content and doneness preferred. Thefirst side usually requires a few minutes longer than the second. Frozen meats also requireadditional time.

Broiling TipsThe broiler pan and its grid allow dripping grease to drain and be kept away fromthe high heat of the broiler.

DO NOT use the pan without its grid. DO NOT cover the grid with foil. Theexposed grease could ignite.

Should an oven fire occur, close the oven door and turn off theoven. If the fire continues, throw baking soda on the fire or use a fire extinguisher.DO NOT put water or flour on the fire. Flour may be explosive.

Broiler Clean-Up Tips:• To make cleaning easier, line the bottom of the broiler pan with aluminum foil. DO NOT cover the broiler grid with foil.• To prevent grease from baking on, remove the broiler pan from the oven as soon as cooking is completed. Use hot pads

because the broiler pan is extremely hot. Pour off grease. Soak the pan in HOT, soapy water.• Clean the broiler pan as soon as possible after each use. If necessary, use soap-filled steel wool pads. Heavy scouring

may scratch the grid.

Always pull oven rack outto the “stop” position be-fore turning or removingfood.

How to CleanUse hot, soapy water and a cloth. Dry with a clean cloth.

Using a soft cloth, clean with mild dish detergent and water or a 50/50 solution of vinegarand water. Follow by rinsing the area with clean water; dry and polish with a soft cloth.Glass cleaners may be used if sprayed on a soft cloth first. DO NOT spray liquids directlyon the control pad and display area. Do not use large amounts of water on the controlpanel - excess water on the control area may cause damage to the appliance. Do not useother liquid cleaners, abrasive cleaners, scouring pads, or paper towels - they willdamage the finish. To remove control knobs, turn to the OFF position; grasp firmly andpull straight off the shaft. To replace knobs after cleaning, line up the flat sides of boththe knob and the shaft; then push the knob into place.

Your range finish is may be made with REAL STEEL Stainless Steel (somemodels). Clean the stainless with warm soapy water using a clean sponge or cloth.Rinse with clean water and dry with a soft clean cloth. DO NOT use ANY storebought cleaners like Stainless Steel cleaners or any other types of cleanerscontaining any abrasive, chlorides, chlorines or ammonia. It is recommended to usemild dish soap and water or a 50/50 solution of water and vinegar.

Gentle scouring with a soapy scouring pad will remove most spots. Rinse with a 1:1solution of clear water and ammonia. If necessary, cover difficult spots with anammonia-soaked paper towel for 30 to 40 minutes. Rinse with clean water and a dampcloth, and then scrub with a soap-filled scouring pad. Rinse and wipe dry with a cleancloth. Remove all cleaners or the porcelain may become damaged during future heating.DO NOT use spray oven cleaners on the cooktop.

Oven racks should be removed, or else their finish will dull and their colors turn slightlyblue. If they do go through the self-clean cycle, wait until the oven has cooled, thenremove the oven racks and rub their sides with wax paper or a cloth containing a smallamount of baby or salad oil; this will make the oven racks glide easier back in and outof their positions.

To clean oven door, wash with hot, soapy water and a clean cloth. DO NOT immerse thedoor in water.

DO NOT clean the oven door gasket. The oven door gasket is made of a woven material,on self cleaning models, which is essential for a good seal. Care should be taken not torub, damage or remove the gasket.

Care & Cleaning

Before cleaning the cooktop, be sure the controls are turned to OFF and the cooktop is COOL.

DO NOT use a cooktop cleaner on a hot cooktop. The fumes can be hazardous to your health, and canchemically damage the ceramic glass surface.

Cleaning Recommendations for the Ceramic Glass CooktopFor light to moderate soil:Apply a few drops of CookTop® Cleaning Creme directly to the cooktop. Use a paper towel or use a non-abrasiveplastic type no-scratch cleaning pad to clean the entire cooktop surface. Make sure the cooktop is cleaned thoroughly, leaving no residue. For heavy, burned on soil:Apply a few drops of CookTop® Cleaning Creme directly to the soiled area. Rub the soiled area using a non-abrasiveplastic type no-scratch cleaning pad, applying pressure as needed. Do not use the pad you use to clean the cooktopfor any other purpose.

If soils remain, carefully scrape soils with a metal razor blade scraper, holding scraperat a 30 degree angle to the surface. Remove loosened soils with cooktop cleaningcream and buff surface clean.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Damage to the ceramic glass cooktop may occur if you use anabrasive type scratch pad. Only use cleaning products that have been specificallydesigned for ceramic glass cooktop.

Plastic or foods with a high sugar content:These types of soils need be removed immediately if spilled or melted onto theceramic cooktop surface. Permanent damage (such as pitting of the cooktop surface)may occur if not removed immediately. After turning the surface elements OFF, usea razor blade scraper or a metal spatula with a mitt and scrape the soil from the hotsurface (as illustrated). Allow the cooktop to cool, and use the same method forheavy or burned on soils.

Ceramic Glass Cooktop Cleaning & MaintenanceConsistent and proper cleaning is essential to maintaining your Ceramic glass cooktop

Prior to using your cooktop for the first time, apply the recommended CookTop® Cleaning Creme to the ceramic surface.Buff with a non-abrasive cloth or no-scratch cleaning pad. This will make cleaning easier when soiled from cooking. Thespecial cooktop cleaning cream leaves a protective finish on the glass to help prevent scratches and abrasions.

Sliding aluminum or copper clad bottom pans on the cooktop can cause metalmarkings on the cooktop surface. These marks should be removed immediatelyafter the cooktop has cooled using the cooktop cleaning cream. Metal marks canbecome permanent if not removed prior to future use.

Cookware (cast iron, metal, ceramic or glass) with rough bottoms can mark orscratch the cooktop surface. Do not slide anything metal or glass across thecooktop. Do not use your cooktop as a cutting board or work surface in the kitchen.Do not cook foods directly on the cooktop surface without a pan. Do not dropheavy or hard objects on the glass cooktop, because they may cause it to crack.

Care & CleaningCeramic Glass Cooktop Cleaning & Maintenance (Continued)Do not use the following on the ceramic glass cooktop:• Do not use abrasive cleaners and scouring pads, such as metal and some

nylon pads. They may scratch the cooktop, making it more difficult toclean.

• Do not use harsh cleaners, such as chlorine bleach, ammonia or ovencleaners, as they may etch or discolor the cooktop.

• Do not use dirty sponges, cloths or paper towels, as they can leave soil orlint on the cooktop which can burn and cause discoloration.

Special Caution for Aluminum Use on the CeramicCooktop:• Aluminum foil- Use of aluminum foil on a hot cooktop will damage the ceramic cooktop. Do not use thin aluminum

cooking utensils or allow aluminum foil to touch the ceramic cooktop under ANY circumstances.• Aluminum utensils- The melting point of aluminum is much lower than that of other metals. Care must be taken when

aluminum pots or pans are used on the cooktop. If allowed to boil dry, not only will be utensil be destroyed, but it mayfuse to, break or mark the ceramic glass surface, permanently damaging the cooktop surface.

Care and Cleaning of Stainless Steel (some models)Some models are equipped with stainless steel exterior parts. Special care and cleaning are required for maintaining theappearance of stainless parts. Refer to the General Care & Cleaning table for detailed cleaning instructions.

Page 22: 318203861A (Rev A) - Frigidairemanuals.frigidaire.com/prodinfo_pdf/Lassomption/318203861en.pdf · ENGLISH 1 Electric Range Slide-in models Use & Care Guide 318203861 (0712) Rev. E

22

Care & CleaningOven CleaningCleaning the Self-Clean Oven (some models)Adhere to the following cleaning precautions:- Allow the oven to cool before cleaning.- Wear rubber gloves when cleaning any exterior parts of the oven manually.

During the self-clean cycle, the outside of the wall oven can become very hot to the touch. DO NOTleave small children unattended near the appliance.

The health of some birds is extremely sensitive to the fumes given off during the self-cleaning cycleof any range. Move birds to another well ventilated room.

Before cleaning any part of the oven, be sure the electronic oven control is turned off or else pushCANCEL pad. Wait until the oven is cool.

DO NOT use commercial oven cleaners or oven protective coatings in or around any part of the self-cleaning oven. DO NOTclean the oven door gasket. The gasket on the oven door is essential for a good seal. Care should be taken not to rub, damage or move the gasket. DO NOT line the oven walls, racks, bottom or any other part of the appliance with aluminumfoil. Doing so will destroy heat distribution, produce poor baking results and cause permanent damage to the interior(aluminum foil will melt to the interior surface of the oven).

A self-cleaning oven cleans itself with high temperatures (well above cooking temperatures) which eliminate soil completelyor reduce it to a fin powdered ash you can which away with damp cloth.

Preparing the Oven for Self-Cleaning1. Remove all excess spillovers in the oven cavity before starting the self-cleaning cycle. To clean, use hot soapy water and a cloth. Large spilloverscan cause heavy smoke or fire when subjected to high temperatures. DONOT allow food spills with a high sugar or acid content (such as tomatoes, sauerkraut, fruit juices or pie filling) to remain on the surface as they maycause a dull spot even after cleaning.2. Clean any soil from the oven frame and the door liner (see illustration). These areas heat sufficiently during self-cleaning cycle to burn soil on. Cleanwith soap and water.3. Remove the broiler pan and insert, all utensils and any foil. These itemsdo not withstand high cleaning temperatures4. Oven racks may be left in the oven or may be removed. If they go throughthe clean cycle, their color will turn slightly dull. After the cycle is completedand the oven has cooled, rub the sides of the racks with wax paper or acloth containing a small amount of baby oil or salad oil. This will make theracks glide easier.

What to Expect During CleaningWhile the oven is in operation, the oven heats to temperatures much higher than those used in normal cooking. Sounds ofmetal expansion and contraction are normal. Odor is also normal as the food soil is being removed. Smoke may appearthrough the oven vent, located on the top of the control panel.

If heavy spillovers are not wiped up before cleaning, they may flame and cause more smoke and odor than usual. This isnormal and safe and should not cause alarm. If available, use an exhaust fan during the self-cleaning cycle.

NOTE: A smoke eliminator in the oven vent converts most of the soil into a colorless vapor.

Setting the Controls for Self-Clean CycleFor the setting of the clean cycle, refer to Timer or Electronic Oven Control Guide.

POSSIBLE CAUSE/SOLUTION

(1) Poor installation. Place oven rack in center of oven. Place a level on the oven rack. Adjustlevelling legs at base of range until the rack is level. When range is level, cooktop may appearout of alignment if countertop is not level. (2) Weak, unstable floor. Be sure floor is level andcan adequately support range. Contact a carpenter to correct sagging or sloping floor. (3)Kitchen cabinet misalignment may make range appear to be unleveled. Be sure cabinets aresquare and have sufficient room for range clearance.

(1) Cabinets not square or are built in too tight. Contact a cabinet maker to correct the prob-lem. (2) Contact builder or installer to make appliance accessible. (3) Carpeting interferes withrange. Provide sufficient space so range can be lifted over carpet.

(1) Make sure cord/plug is tightly into outlet. (2) Service wiring is not complete. (3) Poweroutage. Check house lights to be sure. Call your local electric company for service.

(1) This oven is equipped with a state of the art electronic oven controller. Among the manyfeatures is a full time oven circuit diagnostics system. The controller constantly monitors theinternal circuitry as well as several crucial oven circuits to insure they are all operating cor-rectly. If at any time one of these systems fails, the controller will immediately stop the currentoperation and beep continuously (flashing an error code of “F1, F2, F3”, or “F9” in the controllerdisplay window. (2) Electronic control has detected a fault condition. Press STOP/CLEAR toclear the display and stop the beeping. Reprogram oven. If fault remains, record fault number.Press STOP/CLEAR and contact authorized servicer.

Because lightweight pansheat unevenly, foods may burn easily.

(1) Triple or dual radiant element provides a constant amount of heat at each setting. Irregularglowing effect is depending of the element design and doesn’t affect performance of theelement.

(1) Coarse particles such as salt or sand between cooktop and utensils can cause scratches.Be sure cooktop surface and bottoms of utensils are clean before usage. Small scratches donot affect cooking and will become less visible with time. (2) Cleaning materials not recom-mended for ceramic-glass cooktop have been used. See “Cooktop Cleaning - Ceramic GlassCooktop Models” section under General Cleaning. (3) Cookware with rough bottom has beenused. Use smooth, flat-bottomed cookware.

Poor baking results.

Fan noise during cookingoperation.

Flames inside oven orsmoking from vent.

Oven smokes exces-sively during broiling.

Self-cleaning cycle doesnot work.

Soil not completelyremoved after self-cleaning cycle.

(1) Many factors affect baking results. Make sure the proper rack position is used. Center foodin the oven and space pans to allow air to circulate. Allow the oven to preheat to the settemperature before placing food in the oven. Try adjusting the recipe's recommended tempera-ture or baking time. If you feel the oven is too hot or cool, see “Adjusting Oven Tempera-ture” in the Electronic Oven Control guide.

(1) A cooling fan may automatically turn on and off to cool internal parts. It is normal, and thefan may continue to run even after oven is turned off.

(1) Excessive spillovers in oven. Set self-clean cycle for a longer cleaning time. (2) Excessivespillovers in oven. This is normal, especially for pie spillovers or large amounts of grease onthe oven bottom. Wipe up excessive spillovers before starting the self-clean cycle. If flames orexcessive smoke are present, stop the self-clean cycle and follow the steps under "Stoppingor Interrupting the Self-Cleaning Cycle" in the Electronic Oven Control guide.

(1) Control(s) not set properly. Follow instructions under “Setting Oven Controls”. (2) Makesure oven is opened to Broil Stop Position. (3) Meat too close to the element. Reposition therack to provide proper clearance between the meat and the element. Preheat broil element.Preheat broil element for searing. (4) Grid on broiler pan wrong side up and grease not draining.Always place grid on the broiler pan with ribs up and slots down to allow grease to drip intopan. (5) Grease has built up on oven surfaces. Regular cleaning is necessary when broilingfrequently. Old grease or food spatters cause excessive smoking.

(1) Control(s) not set properly. Follow instructions under “Oven Cleaning” in the ElectronicOven Control Guide. (2) Self-cleaning cycle was interrupted. Stop time must be 3 to 4 hourspast the start time. Follow steps under “Stopping or Interrupting the Self-Cleaning Cycle” in theElectronic Oven Control Guide.

(1) Failure to clean bottom, front top or oven, frame or door area outside oven seal. Theseareas are not in the self-cleaning area, but get hot enough to burn on residue.
