Benefit Concert on Sunday, November 20th at 5:30pm!

Coming up very soon: please come to the Benefit Concert to be presented at St. Monica's on Sunday, November 20 at 5:30pm! This concer t will feature the Liturgy No. 3 by American Canadian composer Roman Hurko, who will be traveling here from New York to join us for this event. This choral work is an extraordinarily beautiful setting of the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, the Liturgy of many of the Eastern Orthodox and Eastern Catholic Churches. The concert will be concluded with sung Compline for the Feast of St. Cecilia. The Cor Unum

Chorale, (“of one hear t”, cf. Acts 4:32), a choir based here at St. Monica's, conducted by our music director Paul Jernberg and including over 50 singers from the Merrimack Valley and beyond, will be performing this inspirational concert. In lieu of tickets, a free will offering will be taken at the concert. All funds raised will go directly to benefit refugees and internally displaced people in the Middle East, through the Knights of Columbus Christian Refugee

Relief Fund. We hope to see you at this concert which promises to be a glorious event as well as a wonderful opportunity to help our brothers and sisters in need! For more information and/or to donate, contact Paul Jernberg at the parish office or visit youcaring.com (type in number 656504).

This Spanish word means “Onward!” “Persevere!” “Hang in There!” Words of encouragement to each other as we travel on life’s journey. Ultreya this month will be begin with Liturgy and includes voluntary sharing in small intimate and confidential groups, fellowship and refreshments that signify Christian hospitality. Our guest speaker, one of our own St. Monica parishioners, Caroline Beaudoin, has been invited to offer a personal witness of what life was like before Cursillo and how it is now after the Cursillo experience. Come support our dear friend! All parishioners are invited to come and share in this monthly evening of praise and worship. Please feel free to invite a friend to join you!

Commission to Assist Our Brothers and Sisters in

Need Nursing Home Outreach …... We have established a team to provide visits to parishioners of Saint Monica and Saint Lucy Parishes who are in the Nevins Nursing and Rehab Center. If you know of a family member or friend at the Nevins who would enjoy having a visit, feel free to contact: Jeanne Desmond at 978-377-0017. Also, If you have a few hours a month to spare, we would love to have you join us in this very important ministry. We currently have four volunteers. (Note: it would be nice if some men could volunteer to talk sports or play cards with residence). We visit in teams of two, and these visits can take place at your convenience. Eventually, as the team expands, we hope to visit other facilities in Methuen as well. For more information, or to volunteer, please contact Jeanne.

Grace-filled Greetings - We have a volunteer who would like to send greeting cards to the parishioners of Saint Monica and Saint Lucy Parishes who may be home bound, in nursing homes or rehabilitation centers, or are going through difficulties. (We will be praying for these people as well.) If you have a friend or relative who would enjoy being remembered periodically, please call Kathy Garon at 978-683-1193, ext 119 and leave the name, address, and a little information about the person's circumstances, and your name and phone number as well. This new program will only be successful if you provide us with the needed information. Also, if sending greeting cards or notes of encouragement sounds like something you would be interested in doing, please call Kathy. Thank you!

ST. MONICA SCHOOL

The students in Gr. 1,2,3 and 4 welcomed an amazing guest speaker on Wednesday Oct 19th. It was the WBZ meteorologist Danielle Niles! She showed the students, interactive clips of her meteorological studio, along with various types of clouds, storms and weather patterns. She had the children (and even Sister Suzanne, the teachers, and Father Lohan) mesmerized as she explained the differences between tornadoes and hurricanes, hail and sleet, watches and warnings, and stratus and cumulus clouds! She displayed her "tornado in a bottle" and explained various places of safety to take cover in during storms. The real treat came the following morning when she gave a shout out to the wonderful St. Monica students on the air! What a pleasure to have such an educational presentation!

FROM FR. Bill

Time to Vote – an important part of faithful citizenship We are called to be faithful citizens and an important aspect of that is voting. This duty is not optional and is a requirement of our baptism that we put our faith into action. We never lay our faith aside in any action of our lives including when we are in the voting booth. All of us are called to a lifelong process of formation of conscience. We must listen to words of scripture and to the Church’s authentic interpretation while also listening to the teaching authority of the Church, particularly on matters of life and marriage. The Church speaks with the authority of Christ and we must always be attentive to what she teaches. We can never claim to be following our consciences without first understanding what the Church teaches and why it does so. Our consciences, to be properly formed, must conform to the truth. Our Catholic social and moral teaching is consistent in promoting the common good and the dignity of the human person. First among issues is the right to life at all stages. This includes the unborn, opposition to the death penalty and euthanasia. Fundamental to our society is the protection of marriage (one man and one woman) as the generator of families-the building block of society. We stand for religious freedom for those of all faiths. We are called to work for peace and to resort to war only as a last option in rare cases when such action meets very narrow “just war” criteria. The preferential option for the poor and economic justice is also required of us, as the Lord constantly reminds us that whatever we do for them we do for Christ himself. We must make sure the poor are fed and that housing and authentic health care needs are met. We are challenged to promote a just immigration policy that recognizes the importance of keeping families together. We can see that all of the above do not fit neatly into the platform of any political party. Catholics often can feel politically homeless as we see some, but not all, of our values championed while others seem ignored. The Catholic Church doesn’t endorse political parties or candidates for office. This is not, as is widely believed, because of a fear of a loss of tax exemption status. In 2012 a number of non-Catholic Christian clergy in Boston held a press conference to endorse a candidate running statewide. There was not a whisper in the press of those churches having their tax exemption revoked. Other Christian clergy across the nation have taped sermons in which they endorsed candidates and mailed them to the IRS in an attempt to bait the government into a court challenge. The government has taken no action. For Catholics, the reason we don’t endorse as a church community is truly sublime. Vatican II described the Church as the “sign and safeguard of the transcendental dimension of the human person” which is “not identified

with any political community or system.”(Gaudium et Spes, 76). This reminds us that though we are to make the world more just through our involvement, our eyes are always to be set upon the life of heaven. Were we to endorse parties and candidates we would forfeit our prophetic voice and be reduced to a mere advocacy group or lobby. In our short lifetimes we have seen dramatic shifts in platforms of political parties. Were we to be tied to one, the authenticity of our call to others to follow the person of Christ would be greatly diminished. Pray about your vote. Ask yourself why you are voting for a particular candidate or party and is your choice driven by your faith? Are you voting based solely on self-interest or truly desiring the common good? Check out http://

www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/faithful-citizenship/for more guidance if you find yourself struggling. Pax, Fr Bill
