LAST WEEK’S PROGRAM

United Way to Inspire

Change and Build

Communities. Do you

know ALICE?

Speakers: Christine Robere, and Jodi Nichols

by RIM Reporter Diane Van Epps

Christine Robere, above, has been president of the United Way of the Lakeshore for the last 13 years (covering three counties—Muskegon, Newaygo and Oceana). She and her husband, Marvin raised three boys and reside in Norton Shores. Who is Alice? ALICE—is the acronym for “Asset Limited; Income Constrained; Employed.” ALICE households earn more than the US Poverty level ($11,170 for a single

adult and $23,050 for a family of four); however, they earn less than the basic cost of living as defined in each community. In 2014 our United Way underwent a Change of Direction, and the overwhelming response was to

deal with the root problem of poverty. The focus in 2015 included those people that made a modest living but earned less than what they needed to survive. Jodi Nichols, bottom of left column, United Way donor relations director for the last year, demonstrated with her 10 friends in the room, on one side five smiling faces of those who earn more than what is required to survive. On her other side, five people each sharing one of their survival budget costs: monthly child care for two children (upward of $1000); food (single adult almost $200, $600 for family); car ($340 for one or $680 for two); other miscellaneous ($126 for single adult, $362 for family). Would you believe the ALICE household survival budget for Muskegon County is $47,724? The United Way of the Lakeshore is working with 40 community partners to help 10,000 more working families meet their basic needs by 2025.

Educational Programs starting with delivering books to infants through age 5 and after school homework help are the beginning of breaking the cycle. Text “luckycharm” to 40403 to see how you can help.

Matching in March Local business and community leader, Nichols, is generously matching up to $25,000 in donations made to United Way of the Lakeshore in support of these programs for early learners and our efforts to improve the assessabiliity, affordability and quality of area child care.

Jamie Hekker and President Josh, as was mentioned earlier, gave out three awards from the Green Apple Raffle to Melissa Moore, Susan Crain and Julia Koch. As all of the Green Apple awards are scarfed up and improved health makes the national news, Jamie and the team will look for more ways to reward extra motivation. Ideas are welcome.
