DESCRIPTION

“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” With these immortal words from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we’re starting the new year on a positive note. The “Ultimate Measure” of a man is the new urban male that we are striving to create this year in our new and redefined publication of 32 Style Magazine. Through many painful (but fun) months of story boards, concepts, editorial meetings, online polls, flyers, street promotions, email campaigns, and photography sessions, we have finally created what we feel is one of the best publications out there for today’s urban man. With our newly designed format, we have created eight reader-friendly categories that embrace the very essence of the spirit of man. Introducing the “Eight Wonders of 32 Style Magazine”!

Why Women Play Hard ToGET?

LIFESTYLE

I think it’s pretty safe to say that for most men it’s not exactly a secret that women play hard to get. For some men, this is enough to drive them bonkers. Don’t let that happen to you. It’s really not that big of a deal – in fact, it is actually a good sign when they play hard to get.

You can’t blame a girl for wanting to test you a bit, can you? One reason women play hard to get is that it makes things more exciting. You really can’t deny that this doesn’t put you on edge and get your heart racing a little, right? So, that can be a good thing. Another reason women play hard to get is to test you. They are used to having guys come after them and hit on them and they want to know wheth-er you are just another one of those guys or if you are really for real.

So, how should you handle it when a woman plays hard to get? The first thing you should do is play it cool. Don’t let it frazzle you, and if it does, don’t let her see it. Think of it as you having to put on

the game face and if you do, then in the end you will get what you want. When it seems like it doesn’t faze you one bit, you are going to pass the test. The sec-ond thing you should do is play hard to get yourself. Don’t answer every single time that she calls you and when you do answer, don’t pick up the phone on the first ring – play the game yourself. Now, a woman might tell you not to do this, but really look at what they respond to, not what they say. Who do women talk about more, the guy who is always there or the one they can’t get a hold of?

If you don’t know the answer to that one, hang around a few women while they are having a conversation about men. It is pretty much guaranteed that the guy who plays hard to get winds up taking up more of the conversation than the one who is always there.

BUSINESS WATCH

The term “Corporation” often gets a bum rap. When things go poorly, it’s the Cor-poration’s fault. When it’s a tough place to work, the Corporation is to blame. Con-versely, the Corporation is a good neigh-bor when it sponsors a softball team, charitable drive, or community event. But the Corporation doesn’t really ex-ist – except as a legal and tax entity. It does not make decisions, promote agen-das, enact strategies, hire workers with disabilities, or pollute the environment. The Corporation can’t do these things because it has no brain or conscience or even a body.

PEOPLE comprise a corporation for the purpose of doing or achieving something. People make decisions, are good or bad bosses, use toxic chemicals, and build bridges that stand the test of time (or fall down). Blaming a corporation for caus-ing the world’s ills or giving it credit for making it a better place is misplaced and misguided.

People need to be held accountable for their actions and they need to be respon-sible for the choices they make, and for the results or impacts that subsequently follow. People make the work environ-ment productive or difficult. People make robust designs or inferior products. Peo-ple serve the community...or steal from it. The individuals who make up our orga-nizations – whether they’re heroes, vil-lains, scapegoats, or unsung contributors – are, in my opinion, on the hook for what they say and do.

Banks, governments, companies, or insti-tutions may warrant our scrutiny but only at the surface level. Everything hinges on people – what they accomplish, how they do things, and what they communicate make all the difference between suc-cess and failure, productivity and waste, prideful contribution and embarrassment, and legal and illegal actions. Blaming the Corporation for times involving difficult situations is the wrong approach. The Corporation may be a face to the public – represented by a building, a website,

a brochure, a logo, or even a TV show sponsorship – but what makes things tick are the folks behind that face. People make the difference because they are the ones who set policies, create expecta-tions, sign off on drawings, make laws, or look for loopholes. Ethics, moral codes, justice, and fairness are constructs that are supposed to guide us in these en-deavors – when we choose to consider them.

Ultimately, responsibility starts and ends with the organization’s leadership and governance. Will they ignore such things as inequities, illegalities, quality, or safety at the expense of meeting financial pro-jections? Will they insist on collaboration, stewardship, employee development, and transparency of information? Will they own up to mistakes, make amends for errors, honor agreements, hold others down the line accountable, and give staff the tools to do the job? To me, the indi-viduals making these choices bear the brunt of responsibility and accountability, not the embodiment of some corporate ID number needed at tax time.

POLITICS

In the United States of America, we are taught, incorrect-ly, that our political system is a democracy. While there are certainly democratic characteristics present within our system of government, we are far from a true democracy. In a true democracy, the voting population votes directly for or against proposed legislation. Our system is one of representative democracy. We vote for representatives who are empowered to vote on legislation on our behalf. This provides a much more efficient form of government over having each eligible citizen vote on every single is-sue.The Constitution of the United States of America is our founding document that spells out the details of how Americans are to be governed. As every schoolchild is taught, it is a document that provides for a system of “checks and balances” to keep any one branch of govern-ment from gaining too much control over the other branch-es of government. In this discussion of the branches of government, the only branches included are usually the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches. While the balance of authority among these three federal branches of government is certainly important for the maintenance of our liberty, there is one very important group that is left out of the story far too often: the states, which have a role to play in keeping the federal government locked within the strictures imposed upon it by the Constitution.Starting in the early years of the twentieth century, there has been a concerted effort to erode the role of states in governing the citizens of the United States. When the Con-stitution was originally written and adopted by the states, it was a compact agreed upon by sovereign states. The states agreed to relinquish a portion of their sovereignty to the newly formed federal government in exchange for improved cooperation and collective security. The Leg-islative branch of the government is composed of two legislative bodies: the House of Representatives and the Senate. The House is the body that is directly account-able to the people who vote for those who will represent their interests. The Senate was designed to protect the interests of the sovereign states, not the citizens directly.Section three of the Constitution defines the Senate as follows:The Senate of the United States shall be composed of two Senators from each State, chosen by the Legislature thereof for six Years; and each Senator shall have one Vote.As of April 8, 1913, the selection of senators was radically altered by the ratification of the 17th amendment to the Constitution, which states:The Senate of the United States shall be composed of two Senators from each State, elected by the people thereof, for six years; and each Senator shall have one vote. The electors in each State shall have the qualifica-tions requisite for electors of the most numerous branch

of the State legislatures. When vacancies happen in the representation of any State in the Senate, the executive authority of such State shall issue writs of election to fill such vacancies: Pro-vided, that the legislature of any State may empower the executive thereof to make temporary appointments until the people fill the vacancies by election as the legislature may direct. This amendment shall not be so construed as to affect the election or term of any Senator chosen before it becomes valid as part of the Constitution. The radical change contained within this amendment shifted the selection of senators from the sovereign states to the people of those states. Isn’t this a good thing for freedom? Doesn’t allowing the people to choose their senators make the people more free and the government more responsive to their needs? In some respects, yes; however, this amendment radically altered the dynamics of our federal government. The sovereign states no lon-ger have a voice within the federal government. This is a usurpation of their role within our political system, which has directly led to a greater concentration of power within the federal government. More power pulled into the fed-eral government results in less freedom for the people. This shift in power resulted in numerous pieces of legisla-tion being passed that further undermined the states. One recent example is the healthcare overhaul that passed both houses of Congress and was signed into law by the president. This law vastly increases the responsibilities of the states to provide healthcare for their residents without providing them with the money to provide these additional services. If the states still had their share of representation within the government, there would be a much smaller possibil-ity of such legislation being passed, resulting in increased burdens placed upon the states. When the Senate was directly responsible to the state legislatures, senators could be recalled at any time; therefore, if a senator acted outside of the interests of his or her only constituency, the state legislature, he or she could be recalled and replaced immediately. The way to increase the balance of powers and return to the wise equilibrium envisioned by the members of the original Constitutional Convention is to repeal the 17th amendment. While on the surface such a move seems to be stripping power away from the people, it would re-sult in the freedom of all Americans being increased, not decreased. The federal government is supposed to play a narrow and clearly defined role. This role has been ex-panded and the strictures imposed by the Constitution have been ignored. After almost 100 years, it is time to move forward by looking to the past and correcting this serious mistake.

BIGGER CHEST

BIGGER CHEST

Aside from building up biceps and abs, men also want to know how to get a bigger chest. Having a well-de-fined chest can give you a more confident posture. Here are some exercises that will help you increase the volume, size, and definition of your pecs.

To avoid injuries and to get the most out of these chest exercises, each exercise should be performed with proper form. For heavy lifting exercises, be sure to have a spotter to supervise and assist you. •Push-ups: For beginners, push-ups tend to be hard but, when you keep doing them, they will soon be easy for you to perform. Have your hands about shoulder-width apart when doing push-ups. •Bench Press: This is the most popular chest-building exercise of all time. It requires a large number of muscle fibers to perform, which triggers the body’s natural growth hormone response. It is best to perform 8 to 12 reps and 1 to 3 sets to build muscle mass and hypertrophy. Don’t let the bar touch your chest be-cause it will cause pressure on your shoulders. •Inclined Bench Press: This is the same exercise as the bench press but this time the bench is in-clined upwards. This works the upper pectoral muscles more. •Declined Bench Press: This is the same exercise as the inclined bench press but this time the bench is declined downwards. This works the lower pectoral muscles more. •Bar Dips: This is a chest and triceps exercise. At first, you can start dips with just your own body weight and then later on use a weight belt. This is done by holding yourself at arm’s length on the parallel dip bar and slowly lowering yourself. At the bottom of the rep, push yourself back up to the starting position. When doing bar dips, the more forward you lean, the more chest muscles get involved in the movement. •Dumbbell Fly: This exercise isolates the movement to your chest muscles. Start by lying flat on a bench holding dumbbells at arm’s length with your palms facing each other. Start to lower the weights by opening your arms in a wide arc as far down as you can. While doing this, you should feel your pecs stretch. Then lift the dumbbells back up to the starting position using the same arcing motion.

•Cable Crossover: This exercise is somewhat similar to the dumbbell fly. It targets the inner chest and works to bring out the impressive striations in your chest muscles. From a standing position, hold the cable handles attached to the overhead pulleys. Bend your upper body slightly forward, with arms extended out on the sides, but keep your arms slightly bent. Bring your arms and hands together toward the center of your body as if you’re hugging someone. Make sure your arms cross each other.
