At its core, the mission of the SHARE Food Network is to acquire fresh, high qual-ity and nutritious food and send it to where it is needed at the lowest possible cost. It accomplishes this mission by buying food in high volume from high value food dis-tribution companies and transporting it throughout the Mid Atlantic region using volunteers and donated facilities. That sys-tem, combined with support from Catholic Charities, allows SHARE to offer food to its customers at roughly half the price that is charged by retail supermarkets.
Layered above that system are host sites and other organizations throughout the region that take full advantage of SHARE’s acquisition and distribution system to ac-complish their own goals at the community level. Providing food, one of life’s neces-sities, is the foundation, but SHARE helps organization do so much more.
The genius of the SHARE Food Net-work is revealed in the ways that local or-ganizations build programs around SHARE that accomplish a variety of goals beyond the core mission. Most host sites are church-es that have formed ministries based on SHARE. These ministries enlist volunteers to transport, sort and distribute the food. They also communicate to the broader con-

gregation the availability of low cost, high quality food from SHARE. Essentially, they form communities around SHARE.
Consider my home parish, the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Before he was head of Catholic Charities, Father John Enzler, was the Pastor there. After learning about SHARE, he asked the parish men’s group to establish a host site at Blessed Sacrament. Retired Navy Captain Tim Gorman vol-unteered to lead the effort. From that tiny beginning, Tim built the program into the juggernaut it is today becoming one of the largest host sites in the network in terms of the amount of food distributed every month.
Using the leadership skills he devel-oped at the helm of several large naval ves-sels, Tim enlisted a team of parishioners to manage the logistics of what became known as “SHARE@BS.” Moreover, he used a variety of communications channels to promote the program. These included blurbs in the church bulletin, a monthly email blast to potential customers and a customized menu targeted to Blessed Sac-rament. He also saw opportunity to grow the program through Blessed Sacrament’s elementary school. Parents of children at the school receive monthly emails promot-ing SHARE latest menu offerings.
He also saw the school as a source of volunteers for the program. Each month, a

Happy Anniversary!!!
In these last 7 years I’ve grown and learned and suffered and stretched, but most of all I have loved. I love SHARE. I love the people who make SHARE happen. I love the concept and philosophy of SHARE. I love YOU!
In the next few months, however, I’ll be moving on to allow fresh leadership and fresh energies move our new projects and programming forward. Projects such as optimizing the warehouse space during non-distribution days, holding more mobile markets, periodic delivery of packages to senior buildings, the restructuring of our front office, and the restructuring of our Advisory Council. All of this is good news for the program, for serving more people, and for reaching new markets.
My hat is off to each of you for all the talent and time you consistently give to your neighbors. May you each be blessed in a thousand ways for each act of service you provide, for each hand you hold, for each box of food you distribute. While I will miss seeing you on a regular basis, please don’t be surprised to see me around the warehouse from time to time.

Continued from page 1have the full support of our pastor, Fr. William Foley. Last year, as part of a special effort to promote the program in advance of the holiday season, the program set up a display outside of church that showed the amount and types of food available for Thanksgiv-ing and Christmas dinners. Attendees at Mass that weekend were able to see for themselves the value and quality that SHARE offers. In addition, Fr. Foley and the other priests made an-nouncements from the pulpit promot-ing the program. Many parishioners signed up to receive SHARE’s monthly email with the menu offerings
SHARE@BS is only one example of how the SHARE program can be molded and adapted at the local level. The 250 SHARE host sites are all form-ing local programs around SHARE in their communities. Once the food leaves the warehouse on distribution day, the face of SHARE becomes the face of each host site. And that is how it should be. While, at its core, the SHARE Food Network is large, complex program that moves hundreds of thousands of pounds of food throughout the MidAtlantic region, SHARE’s true identity can be found at the local level. This is where the impact of SHARE is ultimately felt. And this is where SHARE’s mission is truly fulfilled.

MONEY TALKS Credit Freeze
By Eric Jorgensen
If you do nothing else this year, consider freezing your credit. Why? Because it prevents ANYONE from opening new
credit cards or taking out new loans in your name. Yes, if your card is stolen the thief can still max it out or drain
your bank account; but if your information is also compro-
mised (and let’s be real about that possibility) the thieves can
run rampant. You limit your liability when you freeze your credit. Best of all,
it is now FREE to do so.
How do you freeze your credit? These three companies can
help you through the process. Courtesy Clark.com.

What if I need new credit? If you’re considering a home or car purchase in the next month then sure, delay the freeze. But if you’re just “think-ing about it” then freeze your credit - you can always put a temporary thaw when you’re ready to move forward with the purchase. BEFORE freezing your credit, consider opening a Credit Karma or Credit Sesame, especially if you’re concerned about your credit scores.
MORE WATER SAVING TECHNIQUES1. Check your toilets to make sure
they are not leaking water. Replace the seals and flushing valve when necessary.
2. When running a bath, plug the bath-tub before turning on the water. Run all hot water at first to capture cold pipe water as part of your bath. Ad-just the water temperature after the first few minutes and continue filling.
3. Consider taking a short shower rather a tub bath.
4. Turn off the water while you are brushing your teeth. You can save up to 4 gallons of water a minute.
5. Turn off the water while you are
washing your hands. Wet your hands and turn off the water before you start to lather the soap. Turn the water back on when you are ready to rinse the soap off your hands.
6. While waiting for hot water in the shower or sink, collect the water and water your household plants or water your pets.
7. Plug the sink instead of running the water to rinse your razor and save up to 300 gallons per month.
8. Turn off the water while washing your hair and save up to 150 gallons per month.
9. Wipe out a sink with a towel or
washcloth rather than rinsing with water.
10. Teach children of all ages to turn off faucets completely after each use.
11. Reward children for water saving tips they follow.
12. Avoid playing with toys that would require a pool of water or a constant flow of water.
13. If you have a leaky faucet, grab a wrench and fix it or find a handy-man and get it repaired.
14. Reuse towels by hanging them up to air dry so that they don’t have to be washed as often.
15. Use less electricity. Power plants use thousands of gallons of water to cool with. Using less electricity saves water.
16. Don’t use water to clean your drive-way, patio or deck. Use a broom to sweep up the area.
17. Delay washing your vehicles as much as possible. Eliminating a ve-hicle washing over time saves water and energy.
18. Consider the use of a rain barrel to water plants and lawn.
19. When you give your pet fresh wa-ter, don’t throw the old water away. Use it to water your trees or shrubs.

BlackMusicMonthIn 1979 Kenny Gamble, Ed Wright and Dyana Williams implemented a month-long celebration of the impact of black music. These music business insiders pioneered Black Music Month and helped to create a continuous movement of empowerment and appreciation. On June 7th, 1979 the inspirational group successfully lobbied President Jimmy Carter into hosting a reception to formally recognize the cultural and financial contributions of black music throughout history. Since that fateful year, Black Music Month has grown from an intimate commemoration to national reach with an abundance of events held annually across
the country. As years went on many musicians, fans and influential individuals joined in celebratory observance during the month of June. Today throughout the month events are held embracing the achievements, prominent timelines and impactful moments of Black music. It is a chance to remember those musicians lost along the way. It is also an encouraging pathway for young musicians to follow their dreams. In 2009 President Barack Obama further defined June as African American Music Appreciation Month, and declared that the start of summer would be a celebration for “the rich heritage” of African American

music and how these instrumental musicians, “have enriched American music and captured the diversity of our Nation.”African American Music Appreciation Month continues to bring together all walks of life through the love of music. Join in commemorating the music that influences creativity, diversity, and unity.
“The music of our Nation has always spoken to the condition of our people and
reflected the diversity of our Union. African-American musicians, composers, singers,
and songwriters have made enormous contributions to our culture by capturing the
hardships and aspirations of a community and reminding us of our shared values.”
