Whatever one’s political persuasion has been in the last year, health care has been an important national topic of discussion. Numerous suggestions and solutions have been offered to alter or improve subsidized health care in America. This has caused quite an upheaval amongst health providers for the poor. Several free clinics across the country closed because of the perception that health care was now covered by the

Health Care for the Poor Begins to Stabilize

Our volunteers make direct contact with people who remain

mostly invisible in our society. We have

dedicated and loyal volunteers who literally

reach out to the poor with soaps and

shampoos and socks. At other times it will be student volunteers who are curious about those

who have so little. Sometimes a client will refuse a certain color

sock where upon another will gladly

receive it. Other times a person will ask for multiple items even

with dozens behind him in line. It is always

touching when someone declines an item and

says, “I know someone else will need it more

than me.”

GFC is present for those without the basic necessities at this time of year. So many people contribute their good will, cold weather clothing, blankets, and hygiene items that help folks in the difficult months of the year.

While we have seen a decrease in the number with chronic medical problems, dental care, housing and case management for women’s health remains a constant need. GFC will continue to adapt to the changing needs of our clients and the Indianapolis community.

We look back on another year at GFC and are grateful for our volunteers, donors, leaders, and staff. Our Women’s Health Services director, Lisa Hayes, JD, shepherded numerous women through testing and treatment for serious women’s disease. Our health recovery homes provided shelter for dozens of men and women in our 2 locations. At our dental center, our full line services are always booked solid. Even with expanded Medicaid in Indiana, we continue to see thousands for routine walk-in medical care at our 7 weekly locations. All this and through steady and generous support, we balanced our budget and will continue on as long as we are needed.

GFC News…. Needed Now: 1) We distribute hygiene items (personal size body wash, shampoo, body cream, toothbrushes, toothpaste, combs, etc.) to those living outdoors. Please help! In the winter months, socks, hats, gloves, scarves, pocket warmers and large size coats are especially needed. 2) Volunteer physicians and dentists—consider asking your own physician/dentist to volunteer.
