LCSD - Nearing the End ofAnother Successful Year
The 2014-2015 school year is almost over. It goes with- out saying, this year will be remembered as probably the most challenging many of us have ever faced. In talking with super- intendents around the state, other districts share the same frus- trations. However, in listening to colleagues, it makes me very proud as superintendent to see how well we have handled tough situations. As I have said many times, our success can easily be attributed to quality teachers, administrators, assis-tants, bus drivers, cafeteria staff, and all other support personnel.
Randy Hodges, Superintendent
The challenges faced this year have affected everyone. Thank you for being a team player.
Congratulations to Mrs. Cindy Shirley, Lauderdale County School District Teacher of the Year, and Mr. Kevin Cheatham, Lauderdale County School District Administrator of the Year. Both were honored at a luncheon in Jackson this past week. It was a proud day for our district. Both individuals are true examples of the ideals we represent. Their dedication and passion is inspiring. Again, congratula- tions on this honor and thank you for representing our district so well.
Spring sports are underway! As we enter the playoff rounds, Lauderdale County School District is in the thick of the competition. Congratulations to all theplayers and coaches for your hard work. I wish all you continued success in the com- ing weeks.

Students Learn about the Human Body
Mrs. McCary's 7th grade science classes have been studying the Human Body, and to discover the impor- tance of healthy lungs, they examined their own lung capacity. Students worked with a partner to blowupa balloon using only one breath and then their part- ner took the circumference. Students were im- pressed to discover that a person's size was not al- ways related to their lung capacity
MS Scholar’s Program Presented to 8th Grade
Also while studying the Human Body, Mrs. McCary had the students dissect frogs to learn more about the body systems. Students exam- ined the outside of the frog and then opened them to look at the organs. The students are always taught to respect their frog just as medi- cal students respect their work while learning.
The Mississippi Scholars Initiative is an education pro- gram managed by the Public Education Forum of Mis- sissippi. The Initiative uses business leaders to moti- vate students to complete a rigorous course of study in high school. This promising initiative pairs trained lo- cal business leaders with classes of eighth grade stu- dents prior to the selection of their high school courses. Business leaders help students see the value in taking more rigorous courses. The goal is to encourage and motivate all high school students to complete a defined, rigorous academic course of study that pre- pares them for successful transition to college, univer- sity coursework or vocational and technical training necessary to enter today's competitive job market. Mrs. Debbie Mathis with EMBDC along with Mr. Dusty Culpepper, physician recruiter for Anderson Re- gional Medical Center, presented the MS Scholar’s Program to 8th grade students at WLMS. They talked with the students about making good choices when it comes to their high school years. The students found the presentation to be very informative, and look for- ward to scheduling more rigorous classes for their high school years.
