�  When clients who have been eliminated from their positions come to us for career coaching, they usually tell us that they “never saw it coming!”

�  However, once we outline some of the critical “signs” of pending job loss that might have been present, inevitably our clients admit that several of these clues were exhibited by their organization, for at least three to six months!

�  Sadly employees that are categorized under Title IIV are more likely to be subject to the following in human tactics and they are least likely to recognize that they are victims.

�  Employees who decide to ignore the realities of these signs are never prepared with “plan B" and therefore suffer needlessly. Job searching for them takes much longer and the emotional trauma is much greater than for those who strategically responded to the first sign of a problem.

q  You are asked to update management on all your current projects and/or you are being pushed to wrap up longstanding projects without a new opportunity being presented to you with greater responsibilities.

q  Your expense reports are closely scrutinized and require explanations and/or things that were expensed previously are now being questioned, without a company wide policy change.

q  You recently received a pay freeze or worse still a pay cut.

q  A new committee is formed to restructure your department/project and you are not invited to join.

q  Your office, cubicle or working space has recently been downsized.

q  Time off for personal reasons is denied or questioned.

q  Your office space is moved to a distant location or you are moved to a foreign assignment without a plan for your return and without receiving increased responsibilities.

q  Your company has posted your job position on the internet, intranet, or in the newspaper. You heard via word of mouth that the company is looking for your replacement.

�  You are passed over for a promotion or a raise.

�  Your performance review changed dramatically from previous years.

�  Your performance reviews are filled with double meanings that can be interpreted as positive or negative.

�  Your performance reviews are either canceled or scheduled as an emergency.

�  Communications about your performance normally given by discussions suddenly appear in written form.

q  You are either being given impossible jobs with no chance of success/completion or your duties are changed to those, which are not critical to the company's success.

q  Your job responsibilities suddenly shift and your new assignments have very little responsibility associated with it.

q  Your budget is cut or scrutinized more than usual.

q  Your new assignment(s) is(are) continuously delayed.

q  Your work involves a product that is being replaced or discontinued, and your next project has not been identified.

q  Suddenly someone is hired over you and your title or your staff changes.

q  You are no longer copied on important documents and/or internal communications.

q  You are asked to train a new employee to relieve some of your work load while your workload has decreased.

�  Suddenly your manager does not have time to meet with you or displays indifferent behavior towards you. Your relationship with your manager suddenly changes.

�  You are no longer invited to critical meetings. You are uninvited to staff meetings.

�  Your office is moved away from your group or your manager.

�  Your staff and your peers treat you differently or possibly even ignore you. No eye contact is made.

�  You are asked to prepare a job description and explain your duties.

�  Your boss meets with you less frequently with a much shorter duration.

q  Your boss seems inordinately interested in your contacts and resource base.

q  Your boss starts making your decisions and directing outcomes or starts to give your staff directions.

q  You don’t fit into the culture.

q  People whisper more or the conversation changes as you approach.

q  The danger of acquisition, merger or spin-off exists or you hear word of a “reorganization” at your company.

q  Your company’s stock has been on a “strong sell” list.

q  Company, economic and/or industry trouble signs are present.

q  Your department is not fully integrated with the rest of the company’s goals, direction and culture; your department is not considered vital to the success of the organization.

q  If you checked only a few of these signs, then you are probably safe for the time being. Keep your resume current!

q  If you checked 10-25% of these signs, it could be an early warning sign that there are problems ahead, and your boss is laying the groundwork. Prepare your job search marketing campaign!

q  If you checked 25 -50% of these signs, you will want to quickly begin to seek out a strategic career consultant such as out firm and start to update your credentials. You are probably on the list to be eliminated when management can find a replacement for you. Execute your marketing plan as quickly as possible!

�  We suggest that this checklist be used to make you aware of some of the strategies used in the business world to either prepare for eliminating an employee or to influence an unwanted employee to resign.

�  The checklist should not make you paranoid but should be reviewed at least quarterly.

�  In either case, we recommend that you seek professional assistance to help you negotiate a separation package, and to prepare an exit plan.
