Steubenville San Diego Fundraiser Dinner We’re looking forward to this year’s dinner! If you’re

able to help, we could use donations of bottled water, canned soda, wine and beer, etc. Contact the Youth Ministry office 434-7708 for more information. We all know the importance of seasonings and spices in cooking, particularly salt. It’s necessary for

flavor and curing. Salt is a foundational spice. With this understanding, we are able to understand Jesus’ message in the Gospels about salt losing its taste. If salt loses the very essence of what makes it salt, it’s worthless. Jesus was speaking directly to His disciples, but He is speaking to us as well. We are salt, and if we lose the “essence” of what makes us who we are, we cease to be. Our identity as a child of God never ceases to be, even though we may reject it. However, our identity as a Christian or a follower of Christ can become lost or distorted. Jesus was warning His disciples to hold onto the qualities that made them His followers. To be a follower of Christ means that we choose to live a life pleasing to the Holy Trinity, imitating Jesus in all we do and are. In the Second Reading, St. Paul said he knew “nothing...except Jesus Christ and Him

crucified. At our very core, we need to embody the Gospel. Knowing Christ is the essence of being a Christian. Jesus gives us our “flavor,” which is why we are no longer Christian if we lose Christ. We can only be “seasoned” again with Jesus. Today’s First Reading tells us how to live our faith publicly and let our “light shine” before others. We are called to show the love of Christ to all people, especially those who are pushed to the margins of our society and our world. This is a visible manifestation of who we are as Christians. If we don’t let this light shine before others because we don’t love as Jesus loved, it won’t be long before we lose our flavor. Follow Christ more closely in word and deed this week, especially at your schools, in your homes, and with your friends.
