    JEWISH LIFE

The JCC aspires to be a center of

learning, joy, growth and respect for

diversity regardless of how or whether

    one worships.

The JCC-South Hills plays a large role in

Jewish life in the region, hosting Torah

    study weekends, Chanukah celebrations,

    and Israel Independence Day festivities.

    HOLIDAYS

    Rosh HashanahSeptember 9-10

Rosh Hashanah is a time for serious

    introspection. According to tradition,

G-d decides our fate for the following

year. We eat apples and honey in the

hope that we will have a sweet year.

    Yom KippurSeptember 18

The Day of Atonement is the most

important day of the Jewish calendar. It

is dedicated to fasting, reflection, prayer

    and penitence. Traditionally it is

believed to be the last opportunity to

seek forgiveness from those we have

    wronged during the past year.

SukkotShemini Atzeret, Simchat TorahSeptember 23-October 2

Sukkot is a time to celebrate the harvest.

In honor of the workers who used to live

in the fields, we build a sukkah, a three-

sided temporary booth that has no real

roofs or doors. We decorate it with

    branches, fruits and vegetables. We

remember that when the Jewish people

wandered in the desert after being freed

from slavery in Egypt, they built sukkot

    for shade and rest.

Sukkot is an 8-day holiday. The last two

days are called Shemini Atzeret and

Simchat Torah. Simchat Torah marks the

day we finish reading the last section of

the Torah in the synagogue and begin

reading the first section over again.

    Chanukah, December 1-9

    This eight-day holiday commemorates

the victory of Judah Maccabee over

Syrian King Antiochus, who tried impose

Greek religion on the people of Israel.

    Once the Maccabees prevailed, they

    entered the desecrated Temple and

found an untainted jar of oil sufficient to

light the Temple lamp for only one day.

But a miracle occurred and that small

amount of oil lasted for eight days.

To commemorate that miracle, we light

a Chanukah menorah for eight nights

and eat foods cooked in oil. Daily

candle-lighting services are held at JCC

    facilities.

    Shabbat

Shabbat is a day of rest and spiritual

enrichment . To sanctify the Sabbath, we

say a blessing over wine and eat a

    special braided egg bread, challah.

Shabbat is welcomed every Friday with

a celebration by the Early Childhood

    Development Center.

    CULTURE, TRAVELAND EVENTS

    Amazing Journeys

The JCC and Amazing Journeys offer

vacations for Jewish singles and adults.

    JCC Maccabi Games and

JCC Maccabi ArtsFestThe JCC holds tryouts and sends teens

to the games and ArtsFest each year.

    Jewish Sports Hall of Fame

    Raises funds to support Jewish-related

sports programs in Western PA and

Israel and honors high achieving Jewish

    athletes.
