VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE

It is here! The new sailing season has begun. And pretty weather greeted our IRS sailors. They deserved it after all they planned early, had their boats ready early, and focused on sailing on the water rather than in the sea of paperwork that engulfs many of us until April 15th.

Like the fluctuating winds experienced on the IRS Cruise, things are changing in SOS. Modernization unfolds in numerous ways. Kudos to Eric Smaridge for alerting us to reevaluating what personal information is posted in the Whisker Pole. And thank you to our new Whisker Pole editors Shirley Brooks Hollendursky and Nancy Parsons for implementing modifications. This is a work in progress but you will see fewer addresses and phone numbers posted. I am also excited to introduce our two new Education Chairs Linda Cassuci and Debra Roane. Each has served in numerous capacities within SOS and is well skilled in recognizing what needs to be done and then getting it done. If you have a willing spirit and are interested in participating in the Education committee as a member helper, chair or co-chair of an event, please contact them directly. The winds of change have touched the Day Sail Program as well. Endeavoring to be more sensitive to the vicissitudes of the weather, a shorter turnaround time is being tested. This is no easy task. Thank you to Ellen Pendorf, every coordinator, and every skipper for being instrumental in accomplishing this undertaking. There are basics that need to be managed each year and fortunately we have gotten several critical things completed. Thank you Rita for getting our taxes done! Of equally high priority is getting the Club’s insurance in place. I still find it difficult to believe that only one insurer actually responded with an offer, but that is what happened. Unfortunately we are paying a higher price for it too. If you are skillful in the insurance field, please let me know. We would love to work this issue early and have choices next year. Bob and team are doing a superb job of offering great cruises for the sailing season. And of course we all know how to enjoy an SOS party so sign up now. Sailing, music, good food and good people--life can be great but only if you participate. Do it now! Sandy Huberfeld, Commodore

Locks on both storage lockers will be changed this week. The new codes will be mailed to all Board Members and Committee Chairs by Harry Keith. Ed Menegaux will reactivate the committee to revise the web page mast head. Insurance coverage has been secured. Branding of SOS is moving forward with greater use of SOS phone number (410-798-4098) being integrated into our publications. Rita Svec will work with Admin to (1) assure that registration opens at same time for all events occurring on same weekend, and (2) that events are listed on public side of web page. Coupons for a free Day Sail are provided to each New Member, but directions for redemption are unclear. Rita Svec to create instructions for redemption that will be printed on back of coupon. Board asks that all Committee Chairs be mindful of not sending out too many “blasts” to members.

Unofficial notes from April 14, 2013 Board Meeting

Official April minutes will be posted on the SOS web site when approved in May by the Board of Directors.

TREASURER'S UPDATE BY RITA SVEC Where do my dues go? I know it seems like a lot of money is collected for dues, but these dues pay for the infrastructure of the club: the website and web admin costs, the insurance, locker rental, post office box, financial audit, any advertising we do - to include the Parade of Lights entry. We are definitely attempting to curb costs this year by

questioning the value added of each of these costs. We have cut our phone bill down from $600 a year to $160 a year, but our insurance cost increased as we realized we needed better coverage for events where volunteers serve alcohol. As a result of general inflation, dues will need to go up in coming years to cover these costs. Every effort will need to be made by all of us to minimize these costs. Below is a summary of the items paid for solely by dues and their cost over the past 4 years.

FIRE SAFETY & DOCKSIDE TRAINING 2013

Irene Aronian

A huge thanks to our Skippers and First Mates who provided 52 new members with the opportunity to complete Basic Skills I and II! We’ve heard lots of positive and appreciative comments from new members about the good time they had and how they’re already using the many skills that they learned. Some comments we received:

“It was a fun filled day learning and getting to know you all and the boat. “

“Looking forward to more fun times on the Bay this summer with you all!”

“Great day! Enjoyed meeting you all, sharing the work and the meal.”

“Thank you for giving me a wonderful training experience!”

“Had a blast with my crew! Wind swept and pooped from a weekend filled w/ adventure. So far love this club!”

Hope Andruss ran into Joan Kreeger and John Dombach at the Helen Hayes Award Ceremony, which honors metropolitan Washington theaters and performers. Joan's son, Doug Kreeger, had been nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor, Resident Musical for playing Sasha/Gregori (Rasputin) in Signature Theater's Brother Russia. Carole Jordan, Barb Peterson, Laura Gwinn, and Susan Veccia are in Cabo San Lucas soaking up some sun! They all learned how to scream in Spanish as they enjoyed a wonderful day of zip lining over the canyons while in Cabo San Lucas! Barbara Mistrik writes that she'll be back in Greece by May to October. Anyone planning on being in Greece this summer should let her know by email, in the hopes of meeting somewhere. Ed Menegaux celebrated his 75th

birthday a day early on Saturday night with the entire Southern IRS Fleet in attendance. A wonderful cake from Cakes and Confections topped it all off as everyone sang Happy Birthday to him.

Bernie Halloran has to say that not too many boats anchor in the Arno this time of year, so there’s plenty of room to swing in April. I learned a little Italian last winter and spent 15 days in Florence – that would be Firenze – finally getting to see some of the finest art created during the Renaissance. Almost suffered sensory overload. It’s always fun in Italy, but there just wasn’t much sun. Mostly rain, but that diminishes the paintings and sculptures not one bit. For anyone planning on going, I can recommend the books to read. Oh yes, a third century AD “Sleeping Ariadne” is back at the Uffizi. Thanks, all. Keep the information flowing. There is no column without you. Don’t forget to send me your birth month and day; it does not get published without your telling me.
