VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE

It was horrifying. The SOS storage locker was empty. Just last week there were paper goods, beverages, files, and burgees. Shelves were overflowing. The locks had been changed for increased security, how could this happen. Where could 1500 square feet of stuff go? No time to call the police. I hurriedly made my way to the Seafood Feast and was hoping someone

had an explanation. The paper products I was supposed to get from the locker, I would pick up on the way. I arrived at the sailing Emporium at 5:10 p.m. The sun was shining. Nearly all the 180 people slated to be there were walking around in circles. Tables, chairs, food, wine, beer, were missing. Where was it all? Then my alarm went off. Of course that was a nightmare and not reality. We are so privileged to have a great team of people that see all the details get accomplished. Some of the hard work is visible and some is not. Often there are challenges to be managed. More than thirty people were involved in the Seafood “Production.” A special thank you to Kathy Haven and Robyn Stewart and team for enabling so many people to enjoy a great event. Every month there are people that work behind the scenes. Additionally there are the recurring jobs that special members do with little or no recognition. Our beloved Scuttlebutt is written each month, do you know who writes it? One member manages the orchestration of our food for countless events. Can you identify her? Do you know how many times the same boat has been used for the Parade of Lights and who has graciously provided it? Numerous people share their homes for special events and of course our skippers continually share their boats with us. We get to enjoy because of all the contributions made by so many members. These members contribute again and again. Think of a way in which you might help. Consider a committee you want to join or one you would like to lead. The rewards are great. You get to know more people and enjoy activities even more. Your immediate task comes in September. VOTE! The nominating committee has done a great job of bringing us an impressive slate. Look for the biographies listed on pages 4-6 and see who best represents your interests. Ballots will be posted on line September 15. In case you missed the Town Hall meeting and the list of accomplishments I shared with the group, look at page 16 for a recap. This beautiful September weather in August reminds me of the great sailing coming our way. I am speaking of the potential good winds and nice temperatures. But perhaps we should designate September the SOS gastronomic sailing month. With the Appetizer and Dessert Cruise as well as the Chili Cook-off Cruise we are in for a treat. Hope to see you on the water soon.

Treasurer Report: Club is doing well, all account balances are in good shape. Have received information from accounting firm that review of accounts will cost $2,000 - $,3,500 which is consistent with cost in previous years. The review will include looking at our tax returns and all records going back to November 2010 when the last review was done. Bareboat Committee: No report Brunches: No report Communications: No report Cruising: No report Database: Sixty-seven members now receive the newsletter by mail, 57 are new members who have joined since November, 1, 2012. Cell phones will now be added to the Gossip Sheet. Procedures are in place for the upcoming election with both viritual and paper ballots. The problem with the second login has not been resolved and Memberclicks is researching to find a solution. Education: New Member BBQ chats are still ongoing and should be moved to Membership Committee next year. Dockside Training had 10 skippers volunteer, but was able to use only 5 as number of participants was low. Kathy Haven will be head of Fireside Chats this year and has recruited regional coordinators. The Basic Skills Review Committee has met and recommendations will be sent to the BOD, Skippers and First Mates for review. First Mates: No report Membership: No report Newsletter: Scanning of all located Whisker Poles has been completed. Digital files from the 1980s issues will be posted on SOS web site this month. The July 16-page issue of Whisker Pole was sent to 61 members and 21 copies sent to Happy Hour Coordinators. Cost per issue was $4.75 using Gumpert Printing. The August 20-page issue of Whisker Pole was sent to 68 members and 21copies were sent to Happy Hour Coordinators. Cost per issue was $4.07 using High Starr Printing. Safety: No report Skippers Advisory: A poll has been sent to all skippers concerning proposed change regarding cruising fees for married couples. The poll will close August 10. Results will be shared at September Board Meeting. Social: So far, we have not had anyone offer to lead the awards banquet as event manager. The social committee will discuss our options at length during the next meeting. We will determine if it’s best to have the Awards ceremony as a brunch on February 9 or as a dinner on February 8 and we will report at the September Board Meeting. Other Business: Vice-Commodore Harry Keith reported that Galesville Hall was set up for the Town Hall Meeting which followed this Board Meeting. Commodore Sandy Huberfeld reviewed with the BOD the remarks she will make at the Town Hall Meeting.

I have been an avid Chesapeake Bay sailor since the early 1980’s and an SOS member since 1989. As an SOS Bay

skipper for 15 years, participating primarily in weekend and extended cruises, I have hosted many of you on my boat, Celebration. I am also frequently skipper on the Club’s Bareboat cruises. My activities in SOS have included member of the Board, serving as Secretary and Vice Commodore and liaison to various committees, member and chairman of the Education Committee, and chairman of Spring Training. More recently I have served as coordinator/event manager/speaker of numerous social, education and cruising functions. This year I co-managed the After Spring Training Party, co-taught a class at Spring Training, and as a member of the Skipper’s Advisory Committee, recruited Raft Captains for each cruise. Outside of SOS I have had broad experience in leading volunteer organizations as a committee or board member of a number of sailing, social and alumni organizations. Why run for the SOS Board again? As is frequently said at this podium to give back to SOS and so that others have the opportunity to develop great friends and experiences I have had over the years that would not have happened if I hadn't become active in SOS. I can make a difference by applying my prior experiences from SOS and elsewhere to adapting SOS for a long future. Changes need to be made incrementally. Since SOS is solely a volunteer organization, volunteers need to be recognized for their contributions. 35 years and going strong! Thank you for your support and vote.

Ruth Connolly Hello to all, my fellow SOSers. I like to present my reasons for being a candidate for the SOS Board.

In a word, my reason is "Give Back."

I first became active in SOS in the summer of 1997. Since that time, I have participated in many SOS activities, notably the sailing activities, and over the last two years have assisted with Cruise Co-ordinations. I have also helped informally at a number of SOS events.

Now retired and with more free time, I would like to take on a more active volunteer role in helping SOS grow, expand and prosper.

Having been asked this year to consider Board service I decided this is a good opportunity to step up and follow the sterling example of so many SOSers who have contributed so very much to the Club.

I believe that it is now my turn to give back, so I ask for your vote in the election. Thank You!

Doug Gage I learned to sail as a kid -- was awarded a copy of Chapman's by Milford Yacht Club for being "most improved sailor" in my beginners' sailing class. :-) In 1975/76 I played hooky from real life and spent a full

season as crew on a 62 foot charter ketch sailing out of St Thomas. (I was also a part owner of the boat.) Over the years since, I have sailed with friends in New England for a week or two most summers, especially in the last decade, sailing in Maine and also moving boats between Maine and New Jersey. I crewed for Sandy Daugherty on Siesta on the 2011 Caribbean 1500, and for Emil Becker on this year's DelMarVa Rally (we did complete the first leg!). Professionally, I retired in 2004 after working as a scientist/engineer for the Navy in San Diego and spending four years as a program manager at DARPA in Arlington -- my areas of focus were robotics, network communications, and sensor systems. Since retiring I have worked as a part time consultant, and amuse myself by thinking about how we will keep humans alive on Mars, once we finally send them there. I also sing in a church choir and in the Arlington-based Metropolitan Chorus. I joined SOS in 2003 and, over the past few years especially, have been a regular at SOS brunches and at the Northern Virginia Happy Hours. My sailing activity with the club has been mostly focused on bareboat cruises -- ten of them in ten years, but mixing in a number of weekends and daysails, and one extended. I have served as Bareboat Committee Purser/Treasurer since 2007, offloading work from the Club Treasurer by helping each trip coordinator structure cruise finances and making sure that the financial records reflect actual bank deposits and disbursals. I served as Bareboat Committee Chair from 2009-2011. I see several issues that the Board should be thinking about: (1) the demographics of the club membership, both in terms of aging and also members getting married; (2) motivating skippers so as to balance the supply of crew sailing slots with demand; (3) keeping the Club finances on a long-term even keel, and not overreacting to either short term surplus or deficit; (4) establishing/maintaining the most

appropriate relationship between the Bareboat program and other Club activities -- given that the annual Bareboat cash flow is approximately as large as that of the entire rest of the Club. These came to my mind quickly; I welcome other people's comments on these and suggestions for additions to this list. SOS is a real treasure, and it requires a lot of work from a lot of people to keep it that way -- I hope to be able to contribute to that effort as a Board member.

Kathy Higdon I’d like to thank the Nominating Committee for considering me for a Board position – I feel honored. As a member of SOS for the past 3 years, I have participated in a number of events, including Spring Training, Fireside Chats, CPR Certification, and hosted several Thanksgiving parties. For the past few years, I have been a member of the Social Committee and was the Event Manager for DNR this past May. Most recently, I have decided to advance my sailing skills and am currently a First Mate Candidate. Professionally, I have a M.A. in Clinical Psychology and am licensed in the State of Maryland as a Professional Counselor and have a private practice seeing clients who have difficulties with anxiety, depression, couples & family issues, PTSD, and most recently, gambling addiction. I am not sure if that background is helpful in a leadership position on the Board, but I have learned what it takes to manage a business in this process. My love of sailing began as a child on small boats in Rhode Island. I fell in love with the Bay many years ago and broadened my sailing horizons for the past 30 years to include one trip from Annapolis to Bermuda and then to St. John and St. Thomas. I love sailing and was thrilled to join a club that offered two activities I love: sailing and parties. Both sailing and parties take enormous effort on the part of volunteers and I would like to be part of the 35 year tradition of continuing what we do best.

Only a bylaw will fix something that very much needs to be fixed in SOS. Not electing me to the board, not a policy change enacted by whatever

newly constituted board turns out to be. Because this wrong runs the risk of returning even if a short term fix is enacted. The largest contracts executed by SOS are not required to be re-bid on a regular basis. Rebidding takes effort and is not always popular. It is easier to just go with what is already in place. As a prior board member, I expected and recommended that the web administrator contract be re-bid every three years or so. The reasons are not just economic – at $10,000+ per year it is the single largest contract we are a party to – but also prudent management. It hasn’t happened. This inertia will recur. We need a bylaw change that requires all large contracts be re-bid. A bylaw offers the greatest protection against sinecures at the expense of the membership. Please email me directly at [email protected] if you are willing to sign a petition to amend the bylaws to provide for this. If elected to the Board my highest priority would be to work for this and the greatest possible transparency in club operations.

Jim Randall

I am honored to be nominated for the board of directors. It means more to me than just a position on the board, it means that I can give back to the club some of the pleasure I have experienced. I have been a member of the club since the early eighties and have been a skipper and worked on several committees. I try to volunteer to do something at the events and meetings that I attend just to give back. As for experience in sailing, My uncle built me my first sailboat when I was eight years old and I have been sailing and owning boats ever since. While living in Scandinavia, I lived on and sailed the Baltic and the North Sea in my wooden 57 foot Cutter. I would like see a SOS bareboat in the Baltic in the summer where you can sail 22 hours a day in sunlight. In the States I skippered a 65 foot Catamaran and sailed it to St Croix so it could be used in the charter fleet. If elected, I would help find solutions within the framework of our by-laws to help the skippers, committee chairs and members attain their goals for a bigger and better club.

Sailing is NOT Without Risk!

Safety is a Team Effort – are YOU a Member of the Team?

By Richard A. Green, Safety Chair

“I knew better!!” Accidents are most often a lapse in attention or judgment – little things ignored. Even your Safety Chair is susceptible and occasionally needs reminding! 15-20 gusting to 30; single reef; beam reach; rail in the water – EXHILERATING!! – skipper steps up on the windward deck to adjust a line – bouncing around – NO PFD – dumb!! I would not allow my crew to do that without a PFD on, but… but….but…..(and there are many excuses). It’s the “but…” that gets you! The crew was entirely correct to remind me, “Richard, where is your PFD?”!! If the rule applies to your crew, it applies to the skipper. Skippers, you are the team leader!! Lead by example! The sailing season is well underway and so far we have been fortunate not to have had any serious safety problems. However, sailing is not without risk. Now is NOT the time to become complacent; rather, every time that we step onto a boat, it is time to consciously remind ourselves of some of the safety rules that we all know. • Assess risk and levels of experience and comfort before undertaking sailing and maneuvering – while you may be comfortable with the above scenario, as exhilarating as it may be, some of your crew may not be ready to execute various directions and may be quite uncomfortable given their limited experience – some temperance (i.e.: dump some of the air out of the main) might make the journey safer and more enjoyable for all. • Do not allow your crew to go swimming while building a raft, or where engines and boats are maneuvering in close proximity, even though your boat may already be secured; SOS policy is for swimmers to stay out of the water until the raft is closed or the raft captain has authorized swimming. • Remember, sailing and alcohol don’t mix! Drink responsibly and limit your consumption of alcohol to when you are ashore or in the raft. Consider whether or not you are sober enough to manage or assist with the boat in case of an emergency. • Remember, alcohol and meds don’t often mix well! If you are taking meds for any of a variety of conditions, especially if older, make sure that you know how you will react on meds, and equally important, how you will react if you have just one or two drinks in addition to the meds. • Please, always let your skipper know if you are taking meds, are diabetic or have allergies or other

medical conditions that might impair your ability to function. • When docking or rafting, make certain that your boat is properly secured with minimal gaps over the water - if necessary, angle the boat somewhat in the slip to make sure that where people transfer from your boat is safe. Consider adding handholds or lines to aid in maintaining balance. Consider running lines under the finger pier to avoid a tripping hazard. Do not allow your crew (or yourself for that matter) to step on or off the boat while it is still moving!! • When transferring from boat to dock or to another boat, keep at least one hand free for the boat – even better, ask someone to hold onto your drink or food, etc. Use handholds or hang onto something rigid such as the shrouds (not the loose jib sheets). Don’t linger with one foot on the boat and the other on the dock – transfer your weight swiftly. If possible provide some lighting where people transfer from boat to dock or to another boat. When returning to your boat after dark, use a flashlight – finger piers and midship transfer points are rarely well lighted. • Whether summertime, spring or fall – be aware of the air and water temperatures and dress accordingly. If the heat index is over 105 degrees, consider the weather dangerous - the high humidity prevents evaporation of perspiration, making cooling less efficient. If excessively warm, consider a refrigerated spray bottle filled with cold water. In early spring or late fall, avoid sudden immersion in cold water, even if the air temperature is warm! The bottom line: Maintain an awareness of where you are and what is happening around you. Plan your activities so as to minimize risk, while avoiding fatigue, dehydration, or dangerous situations that you are unprepared to handle given your skills, training, and experience. If you have concerns about safety or for anyone’s well-being, speak-up! If someone is behaving erratically, speak-up! Let others know of your concern. The idea is to take care of each other! Safety is everyone’s responsibility

! Are YOU a member of the team??

SAILING PROGRAM OFFERED TO SOS MEMBERS

SEPT 14-15 - $356

Chesapeake Sailing School is offering their best-known and most popular Basic Sail Program at a 25% discount to SOS Members. There will be four students and an instructor on each of the four boats they have designated for us. The school’s goal is to make a totally inexperienced beginner into a confident and competent sailor, with a functional knowledge of basic sailing. They aim to teach the novice the essential skills of sailing in a two day period. Equally important, they want you to enjoy yourself, make new sailing friends and have a great time. All courses combine classroom instruction with practical hands-on experience aboard their Tanzer 22s, exceptionally safe, stable, fin-keel crafts that are fun to sail. The format calls for a half hour of lecture and then three hours of practical in-the-boat instruction, repeating the schedule in the afternoon. This gives students opportunity to practice what they have learned. The instructor has a step-by-step lesson plan to train you to be a competent crew member or skipper. You will learn all the nomenclature, how to rig/derig a boat, wind directions, differences between using a tiller vs. a wheel. When to tack or jibe, standard commands for tacking and jibing. When docking a boat how to set the bow, stern and spring lines. Procedures when a tanker is coming your way. You will practice man overboard procedures and how to retrieve a person from the water. These and many more skills will be part of your instructions. To register for this course, contact SOS coordinator Julia Oravecz by September 3 at [email protected]

ARCHIVED WHISKER POLES

All Whisker Poles from 1982 have been digitized and are now available to view on the SOS web site. We are still missing a few issues. Please let editors know if you have a copy of the following Whisker Poles: 1987 December; 1989 January through August. Some achieved articles you may find interesting are:

• 1982, August, Page 4 – Caribbean Cruise • 1985, February, Page 2 – Committee

established for sailing activities other than weekend cruises such as Day Sails, Women’s Sail and sails outside the Bay. Also the Cruise Coordinator Manual was written and Skipper Tenders were organized.

• 1986, July, Page 1 – skills program developed for First Mates

• 1986, October, Page 5 – adoption of Rafting Procedures

• 1987, March, Page 4 – SOS Fleet has 85 boats

• 1988, May – new Whisker Pole Masthead designed by SOS member Duane Hull

CORRECTION: Last month we stated that a write up about the first SOS Raft was in the July 1990 issue. Bill Small (unofficial club historian) contacted the Editors and noted that the article actually referred to the first raft of that season. The very first SOS circle raft was built in 1988. Narrative from Bill:

Maurice Pollard (Yankee) was talking up building circles from 12 o'clock position only, having the four primary anchor boats (12-3-6-9 o'clock) set their anchors. Their sterns were joined by passing lines.

Other boats were then brought in between them. He had seen this in New England.

Frank Florentine and I built the first circle from 12 o'clock position around to 6 o’clock position on July 8, 1988 at Rideout Creek off Whitehall Creek. By the next year, that became the standard way to build circles.

The original way of being joined by passing lines was not used much again. It was, however, used for the Monster Raft in 2002.

Bigger Better Blue Lips Bash

TO DRESS OR NOT TO DRESS……

…….up in a costume for the SOS Halloween Party? That is the question! Fortunately you have some weeks to decide! In the meantime, please mark your calendars for the weekend of October 19-20 for the Halloween Cruise and Party. We all know October can feature some glorious sailing; and the Party will be at Miles River Yacht Club in St. Michaels, MD. The club is recently renovated and we will be in the Commodores room which overlooks the docks and water. So, reserve the date and look forward to a delightful evening of dining, dancing and a costume parade. See Fleet Exercises for sign-up details.

Yes, it is cold in November and we often end up with blue lips after a day of sailing. But see what we have to look forward to at the end of the sail – a Blue Lips Bash! This year the November 9th

Blue Lips Cruise will have two destinations to sail to or you can drive in if you prefer.

Northern Destination

will be to Maryland Yacht Club, located on the Patapsco River in Pasadena.

We will continue our Blue Lips tradition of a 5:00pm BYOB Happy Hour on the dock with each boat providing one appetizer to share. Then the party will move to the dining

room where you can order a splendid meal of your choice from the menu. Each person is responsible for paying MYC for their own meal. After dinner we can end the evening in the Sand Dollar Bar or in the cozy fireplace lounge that features a big-screen TV Southern Destination

will be to Chesapeake Yacht Club, located on the West River in Shady Side directly across from Pirate’s Cove. We will continue our Blue Lips tradition of a 5:00pm BYOB Happy Hour on the dock with each boat providing one appetizer to share. Because there are no restaurants in Shady Side, we have asked the chef at CYC to create for us a sumptuous buffet to be served at 6:00pm.

The buffet will feature Rockfish/Vegetable Soup, Freshly tossed Caesar Salad with Homemade croutons, Hot Balsamic Grilled Veggie Orzo, Herb Chicken Picatta with White Wine Cream Sauce, Sliced Pork Loin with Chipotle Demi-glaze, Mash potatoes, Green Beans Almandine, Lemon Bars, and Pumpkin Cupcakes. The $45 price of the dinner will include two drink tickets for the beer and wine bar. Water, tea, lemonade and coffee are free. If you wish to have additional drinks, beer and wine will be available for $5, sodas for $2 - CASH ONLY.

This year we have reserved the entire dining area so there will be a huge dance floor (wooden and not the concrete we often have) and we can play the music as loud as we want until 10:30!

If weather permits, the evening may end with a roaring fire located on the patio where you can roast marshmallows, cook s’mores, or just sit in the wooden rockers and enjoy the flames.

PHOTO ID CORRECTIONS Last month on two people were incorrectly identified in photos on page 11. In the “New Member” photo Mary Lou Butler Lee was misidentified as Mary Lou McClellan. In the three-person photo on the same page, Kathy Higdon was misidentified as Sharon Challmes. Apologies to all, and thanks to Carl Pergler for his sharp eye!
