Yeah! The boating season is here but so is the heat. Seems like just yesterday it was too cold, now it’s too hot. Fortunately we hardy SOS sailors have been able to work it out and enjoy. Memorial Day Weekend had its challenges but most of us postponed departure, altered destination and had a delightful weekend. And kudos to all the skippers who watched the

weather reports recognized the high heat index and uncooperative wind projected for this early July cruise. You communicated with fellow skippers, and crew; and organized a safe and desirable alternative destination. Thanks Ron Pence for being raft captain, thanks Mike Pittinger for helping with dinghy anchor delivery. Thanks Steve Deller for reviewing angles, potential storms, and offering possible enhancements. Lots of good teamwork! Teamwork is integral to sailing and SOS. The time for the membership of SOS to elect new members to the Board of Directors is here. Our nominating committee, headed by Barbara Wise has put together a slate of candidates, who will stand for election to the SOS Board of Directors. Hopefully you attended the SOS Town Meeting on August 3rd and met them. Look for candidate’s biographies in the September Whisker Pole, and follow up with your vote. Are you sailing? I love weekend sails. But this year I have become reintroduced to another opportunity that catches the fancy of many members of the club. Envision a sail with no pre-designated destination, a sail that just follows the wind of the day. Add to that the opportunity to meet fellow sailors at the beginning of their sailing experience and superbly enthusiastic. If you are new to sailing, try it. Know your basics (terminology for instance), but enhance your skills on the boat. See page 13 and learn about one of our day sail skipper stars. If you are a skipper, you may just find this to be the right compliment to your weekend sails. And numerous new members seized the opportunity to go to one of the New Member Barbecue Chats. These chats are newly reinstituted and invaluable. Not only are they helpful to new members, but to all of us. Informed people make better members and sailors. Thank you education committee for embracing the idea and making this opportunity available this season. Skipper’s Advisory has just completed their second meeting of the year. These are meetings that have also been reinstituted. Thank you Laura Gwinn for seeing that our skippers have a forum for discussion. Skippers are essential to the SOS team. As most of us know their monetary investment does not end with the purchase of a boat. We thank you for sharing your treasured sailing home with all of us. I know you will also be sharing ideas with other committees and with the Board of Directors. Do not miss my very favorite cruise and party of the season. August 17 – 18th is the Seafood Feast. I hope to see you there. Sandy Huberfeld, Commodore

Treasurer Report: Overall finances look very good compared to last year. I analyzed this year's anniversary party to prior years all the way back to 2008 and have to say "Well done”! In process of writing RFP for an accountant to review SOS financial records. Bareboat Committee: Italy trip has about 60 people have signed on and a waitlist. The French Canal Barge trip has has 118 people signed on to participate in this cruise.......a record for any Bareboat trip! Signups are currently underway for the BVI trip with more than 30 already aboard. Sign ups have been slightly less than expected and there is the possibility that one boat may need to be cancelled by mid August. Brunches: Contracts have been signed with the Doubletree and the Sheraton for next season brunches. Communications: no report Cruising: Analysis of the first six months of the sailing seasons shows that crew days for Day Sails and Weekends is higher this year than last. However, the number of boats days is fewer than last year. Database: Text will be added to Fleet Exercises directing registrants to contact the coordinator for mailing instructions so that registrations aren’t mailed to the PO Box. Minor corrections were made to the email confirmations for the Labor Day and Appetizers & Desserts cruises. Testing of forms will be performed prior to activation to make sure fields are populating with the required information. Revising Database manual. Education: New Member BBQ Chat in Rockville was successful with 23 people attending. The NOVA BBQ cancelled due to lack of participation. Dockside Training scheduled for August 10. The Basic Skills Revision Committee has met and is revising the Basic Skills program. Revisions will be sent to Skippers, First Mates, and BOD for comments prior to implementing. Will not know until November the date of Spring Training until AACC gives approval. First Mates: Continuing to encourage potential First Mate candidates. Also reviewing the First Mates’ Sailing Survey responses. Membership: no report Newsletter: Scanning has been completed of 120 additional past issues of the Whisker Pole (1990-2000). July newsletter was mailed to 61 members and 21 issues to Happy Hour coordinators. Safety: no report Skippers Advisory: As a result of July 14 Skippers’ meeting (1) a request will be made to the BOD to provide funding in the budget for at least two skippers’ meetings a year, (2) a recommendation made to Education to hold a multi-day training for new members, (3) a motion made to BOD to consider married skippers as a single entity provided a paying berth is available for assignment. Day sail participation was also discussed and a survey taken among skippers to find out why they don’t do day sails. Social: The Anniversary Party was well attended, stayed within budget, and was a successful event. Still have been unable to locate an Event Manager or an Emcee for the Awards Banquet. Next meeting August 6th. Other Business: With deep regret, the Board accepts Brian Guptil’s resignation and sends him prayers and well wishes for his health. There are now two vacant positions on the Board that will not be filled for the remainder of this Board’s term. The Board voted to table a motion for thirty days to consider married skippers as a single entity so that more information can be gathered from cruising committee and feedback is received from skippers via a survey. BOD approved presenting the Annual SOS Awards at a brunch instead of holding the traditional evening Awards Banquet. Dave Tuttle was appointed as the new liaison for the Education Committee.

If you have attended the awards ceremony in previous years, you may have a good idea of what in store for you. But just in case you don’t know - duties of the Event Manager include planning the event, selecting a theme (if any), and recruiting volunteers to help at the event. The Emcee requests award nominations, selects from those nominations, and presents the awards. If this sounds exciting to you, please contact Robyn Stewart, Social Committee Chair at [email protected]

Survey Results A comment/survey form is sent to you each time you attend an event or sail. Your answers provide valuable information that is used to revise and improve activities. Thank you for taking the time to complete these forms. Below are results from the 89 people who completed a survey after the recent Anniversary Party. As you can see, the majority rated all categories rather high. The comments were compiled and will be used when planning future parties. Several people asked in the survey if the Social Committee would consider another venue. In preparation for the 2013 party, five marinas were contacted and were found to be not appropriate because they (!) could not handle the large number of SOS boats, or (2) had no hall or room large enough for our party, or (3) charged far too much for use of their party facility. Sailing Emporium does not charge us for use of the boat shed, but this year we were not told in advance that it was not available for our party as they are restoring a wooden boat. We had no outdoor lighting because the switches were inside the locked shed! But SOSers did not let the dark keep them from dancing well into the night! If you have a suggestion for another venue, please contact any member of the Social Committee. Or joined the committee and help us brainstorm for future events!

Membership Spotlight

By Sandy Huberfeld

If you like to have fun sailing, you may want to join Greg Moore, skipper of Moorewinds II and crew for a sail. He enjoys teaching new members basic sailing skills of this healthy sport. He said, “There are passengers, but I genuinely enjoy novice sailors, who want to participate and learn the sailing”. His love of the sport has enriched the lives and experience of our SOS members. He docks his sailboat in Baltimore, in the Camden area. He has generously provided SOS members with numerous day sails throughout the years. He joined the club, when he noticed another sailboat owner at his marina had countless crew including different women hop on his sailboat each day or weekend. He didn’t understand how one boat or skipper could attract so many sailing companions. When he asked the skipper, what’s the deal? The skipper said, “SOS.” After joining in 2004 and taking countless day sails with designated SOS crew he learned the joy of

sharing the sailing experience with all interested SOS crew. Usually taking five or six crew regularly he meets a diverse group of people. His original spark for joining was left in the dust. Getting to

spend time with men and women as crew he reaps the rewards of helping others. Sometimes the joy of imparting knowledge is immediate and other times knowing he has become an important part of their sailing beginnings is the reward. He keeps his boat on the Patapsco River, so he day sails from the Inner Harbor to the river. SOS would like to salute Greg Moore, for all the day sails he has given to club members. The club would also like to acknowledge, Miles, his dog, who always

sails with the boat. Crew may have to learn the Rules of the Road, but Miles is master of the Rules of the Boat! Thank you for sharing your sailboat, knowledge, and good humor to the SOS members.

PARADE OF LIGHTS 2013? (NSA: ARE YOU LISTENING?)

Christmas isn’t that far away and the Parade of Lights is starting to get its act together. We are searching for a skipper to volunteer his/her boat, and we are searching for some ideas. Top of the idea list is the NSA listening on all those requests Santa Gets! But other ideas are indeed welcome. Volunteer to help. Contact the head elf, Frank Florentine at e-mail to [email protected]. The Parade of Lights will be held Saturday, December 14, 2013. All the work will be done at Frank Florentine’s house in Annapolis unless it is done somewhere else! No reservation required, no cost; no fuss! It couldn’t be easier.

The Parade of Lights:

where all the lights are bright, all the elves are light,

and all the fun is above average!!

Cruising Courtesy

by Janet Stone (submitted by John Halstead) Several years ago, I was given a list by one of our skippers of his "pet peeve" issues concerning crew. I polled some other skippers, and the result was an article on cruising courtesy. I have recently been asked to update this information and pass it on to the Whisker Pole. It contains items that generally go without speaking, however, new members may find it helpful. And, as always, it never hurts any of us to be reminded of "cruising courtesy" now and then. This may appear as a lengthy discourse on rather rigid rules. To the contrary, all suggestions were made by skippers in an attempt to keep our sailing safe, fun and free of conflict. If you haven't sailed with us yet, you will find we are a diverse, multi-faceted and fun-loving group. Preparing to Sail: • Do not expect the boat to meet your personal schedule of when to depart and arrive; sailing involves too many variables. • Remember that a weekend on a boat is not a weekend at the Marriott; you should not expect all the comforts of home. • Leave the red Samsonite at home with the red wine (although, I am personally delighted to say that some skippers allow

careful imbibing of red wine on their boats!); soft luggage, duffel bags, etc. are preferred. • Pack as lightly as possible; excessive baggage poses a problem in the limited space on a boat. AND contrary to popular

belief, it is possible to sail for two days without three changes of clothing per day! • Do not expect the boat to have foul weather gear, etc. for you. • Bring all personal toiletries; i.e., shampoo, soap, towels, sleeping bags, etc. Do not expect to find these on board. • Only boat or white-soled shoes (sneakers) should be worn on board. • Lotion or gel sun blocks should be used; oils or greasy, or spray tanning products should not be brought on the boat. • Keep meals simple; save the large, difficult creations for a dinner party at home and invite us all! • Pre-chill food and drinks brought on board. • Tell the skipper/crew if you have a medical problem and how to handle it; several members fall into this category and it

does not hamper anyone's good time when everyone is aware of any problem and thus prepared. • If you are experiencing serious medical problems that can be expected to "flare up," cancel your cruise. • If you must cancel the week of the cruise, it is your responsibility to find someone to replace your meal(s) or see that the

food gets to the boat. • There's no such thing as a free ride; you'll be expected to participate in boat handling. • Do not be afraid to say "I don't understand" if the skipper gives a command that is not clear to you. • Remember, your skipper is not a charter boat skipper; you are his/her guest. • Crew should not expect to pick their own berths; the skipper will make assignments • Make sure you are checked out by the skipper or first mate on operation of stove/oven and head; report problems

immediately. • Do not strike a light, if you smell "gas" fumes. Under Sail: • Be certain ice chest/refrigeration door is closed tightly. • Be considerate in your use of water; tankage is limited. • Turn out lights after each use. • Do not "loan" your boat's equipment or galley utensils to others without the skipper's permission. • Be on time for meals to cook or eat at the agreed upon time. • Do not expect others to clean up after you; if you prepare a meal, plan on cleaning up, as well, unless other crew offer to

take care of this detail. • Accidents happen. If you should lose or break anything, report it to the skipper. • Do not jump overboard without the skipper's permission…REALLY..this does happen! • In raft ups, cross over the bow of boats only, unless invited to pass through the cockpit by the skipper. • Enter the cabins of other boats only upon invitation. • Do not embarrass your boat or yourself by your behavior. • Enjoy yourself without drinking to excess and becoming a problem for your skipper and crew. • Do not sail off on someone else's boat without the skipper's permission. Cupid may strike, but your crew may depend

upon you for the return sail! • Respect other people's privacy and property. • Do not use up your boat's supplies and take yours home because you didn't need to use them. • Do not leave the boat at the raft or at the dock until the skipper releases you. • Do not hesitate to ask "nautical" questions • Do not hesitate to report boat problems to the skipper • Do not fail to offer help when it might be needed. • Most importantly, leave your problems and worries at home and have a GOOD TIME!
