HENRY SKINNER
History of company, Henry Skinner & Company, and partners:
Henry Skinner & Company had a store on the mauka side of Queen Street at the corner of Kaahumanu in 1841. Skinner was involved in Lord Paulet's seizure of the Islands in 1843, as was his junior partner, Jolm Robson. Henry Skinner was in England by the fall of 1849 and Robson state that the business has ''been carried on in liquidation for the last year" and that the company's books would be closed as of December 31, 1849. Jolm Robson went to England early in 1850, arriving in London May 3, and returned to Honolulu in July 1851. Henry Skinner died in London on March 20, 1850; John Robson died during the summer of 1857, presumably in Honolulu.

Note: Authorship of this book previously identified as "Unnamed Doctor." Handwriting comparison identifies the
volume as written primarily by Rev. Lowell Smith. Smith was pastor of Kaumakapili Church from its founding in
1837. In 1875, in defense of a charge that he practiced medicine without a license, Smith claimed to have observed
Hawaiian ailments for 40 years. These points are strong evidence that this volume is primarily the work of Rev.
Lowell Smith.

SOCIAL SCIENCE ASSOCIATION OF HA WAIi
Introduction
The records of the Social Science Association of Hawaii document the transactions of its meetings from 1882 to 2002. The records contain the minutes and essays of the Association. They total 8.56 linear feet. The Association deposited its records in the Hawaii State Archives in 1965 and gave them to the Archives on December 1, 1990 by deed of gift. It has made subsequent gifts through August 30, 2002. There are no restrictions on access. The essays after 1983 are copyrighted.
Administrative History
The Honolulu Social Science Association was founded on February 27, 1882, for the purpose of "social and intellectual advancement." Initially it met at the home of the Rev. Charles M. Hyde in Honolulu. After 1882 it met once a month from October through June of each year.
The Association's main purpose was to hear conversation and a presentation on contemporary social, political and economic questions. For that purpose it invited speakers from among its own membership, and occasionally from among nonmembers. It was modeled on the Monday Evening Club of Haverhill, Massachusetts, of which the Rev. Hyde had been a member. In its early years, the membership grew from 14 in 1882 to 40 in 1905. In 1905 the membership was capped at 40.
Among other duties, the secretary of the Association kept the minutes and a file of all the essays read to the Association. These records comprise this collection. Notable secretaries of the Association included the Rev. Charles M. Hyde, Col. Harold H. Kent, and Mr. Aaron Levine.

Scope and Content
The records of the Association document the transactions of the meetings from 1882 to 2002. They consist of the minutes, comprising 8.56 linear feet in 82 volumes. The volumes are arranged chronologically.
The volumes contain an agenda for each meeting, the minutes, correspondence, and either an abstract or copy of the essay or essays given at each meeting. The volumes also contain the annual reports of the secretary and treasurer, if applicable, and membership lists.
The essays are of a sociological nature. The topics include such matters as the contemporary economy, politics and society of Hawaii, and occasionally descriptions of visits to foreign countries.
The minutes are handwritten from 1882 to 1905; typewritten from 1905 to 1983; and in xerox copy form from 1984 to the present. A transcript exists for the handwritten minutes from 1882-1888 (volume 2).
Initially, the essays were either summarized or selectively copied into the minutes ( 1882-ca. 1925). Sometime after 1925 the complete texts of all essays appear in the minutes. Beginning in 1983 the essays were bound separately from the minutes in a volume entitled "Proceedings". The complete text of 14 essays from the period 1882 to 1982, and a list of the titles and authors of all the essays for the same period, is given in the volume, Representative Essays: A Centenary Celebration, 1882-1982 (Archives library call no.: 996 S7c), which is cited among the sources for the Administrative History, above.
Biographical sketches of the persons who belonged to the Association in 1983 were compiled in volume 46.

UNIQUE ASSOCIATION COP?
Stewart (c.s., Chaplain in the u.s. Navy) A Visit to the South Seas in the U.S. ship ''Vincinnes•i 1829-30, with Scenes in Brazil, Peru, Manilla, the Cape of Good Hope and St. Helena, First Edition, 2 vols., sm. Bvo, ht. calf, gilt backs, uncut (text somewhat spotted and piece cut from 4 preliminary leaves in Vol. 1.), New York, 1831
In the collection of the National Library of Australia.
An intensely interesting copy .formerly the property o.f Richard Charlton, British Consul in the Sandwich Islands.
In. the Hawaiian section, pages 61-282 co.f Vol. 2J are 29 inserted leaves or slips containing a great deal of information which corrects, explains and amplifies statements made by Stewart, and in some of which Charlton himsel.f was involved. Several of these leaves are signed by Charlton and one is dated September 1832. In addition to the insertions there are a few marginal notes in Charlton's hand.
One of the longest notes, ·extending to over 100 closely written lines, refers to the local custom that when an animal breaks into a plantation and injures the crop it becomes forfeit to the owner of the land. Apparently Mr. Charlton's cow twice raided a plantation and was shot by the owner. According to Stewart, be (Charlton) and a Mr. Jones (this was J.C. Jones Jnr., American Consul) seized the islander concerned and nearly strangled him. Charlton's own account puts a very different light on the matter. There are also references to Governor :Boki and other well known Hawaiians.
Charlton was apparently not very pleased with the book or with some of those on the "Vincinnes", for on the title page of volume 1. where the author's name is given as c.s.
Stewart, .A.M., he has added the words "& Jackass". 'While at the end of letter 24, which is a retrospective view of the visit to the Sandwi,ch Islands by Captain Finch, Commander of the "Vincinnes", he finishes a note with the words "so much for Captain Finch's accuracy".
Transcribed from descriptive material at the beginning or the microfilm (NLA MS 4192)
See microfilm: MFL 3 7. NLA = National Library of Australia. Typescript of Charlton's notes filed in M-444.

SWAN & CLIFFORD
Ship chandlers, 1849- 1855. No partnership agreement was ever drawn up or signed by Lyman Swan and Oman G. Clifford, but they were in business together from the time they both arrived in Honolulu on the brig Pacifico, January 29, 1849, from San Francisco. Both bakers by profession, the two American citizens went into the baking business together at the comer of King and Fort Streets. Enlarging their interests, they had become ship chandlers by the time they moved into new quarters on Queen Street on March 2, 1854. Late that year, Lyman Swan sold forged whalers' drafts in large amounts to various parties in Honolulu. With the proceeds of these sales, two whaling-trading vessels, the bark George and the brig Leveritt, were fitted out. Just before news of the forgeries reached Honolulu, Swan left town on the George, March 26, 1855, on a purported whaling cruise, with San Francisco as his ultimate destination. On March 25, his partner, Oman G. Clifford, left on the Leveritt for Japan.
In a suit brought by their creditors in the Hawaiian Supreme Court, April 1855 (Law #954}, the partners were declared bankrupt as of January 25, 1855. Clifford returned to Honolulu later that year and died here May 22, 1884. The Hawaiian government instigated extradition of Swan from California, but he never returned.
