✔ General Care—Wipe off the chrome parts at least oncea week using a clean, soft cloth. Clean all metal partswith auto wax or similar products. Dry the chair immedi-ately if exposed to moisture. Do not use abrasivecleanser or materials that will scratch the finish off thechair.

✔Medline recommends the use of an antimicro-bial/antibacterial cleaner such as PRECISE® HospitalFoam Cleaner Disinfectant (stock number: CLH40513) tomaintain and disinfect when multipatient use is plannedor to satisfy JCAHO standards.

✔Tires require minimal maintenance, but should occasion-ally be cleaned with a damp cloth. Replace the tires if theybecome cracked or severely worn.

Precise® meets OSHA and CDC standards for bloodborne pathogen con-tamination. Kills HIV, HBV and HCV in one minute. Convenient foam workswell on equipment surfaces and works great for cleaning wheelchairs.Spray it on, let it sit for 30 seconds and then wipe clean with ease.

WHEELCHAIR MAINTENANCE

1 Using the wrench provided with every Medline wheel-chair, loosen and remove the bolts securing the frontcasters to the forks.

2 Move the caster to the appropriate height according to the mode designated for use. (Ex: In the standardheight the front casters would be secured through the lowest hole in the forks. Hemi height would requirethe highest hole.)

3 Once you have located the appropriate hole, re-assemble the pin and bolt and tighten.

4 Confirm that the wheel is secure before using.

ADJUSTING the Front Casters

CLEANING and CARING for a Medline Excel™ Wheelchair

1 Using wrench, loosen the bolt located in the hubof the rear wheels.

2 Remove the rear wheel from the standard heightport and insert the axle into the hemi height porton the frame of the wheelchair.

3 Tighten the bolt and ensure the wheel is securedto the wheelchair frame.

4 Repeat on opposite side.

Use this easy step-by-step guide to make the right choice for your patients

Step 3: Choose the Best Cushion Design

■■ AdvancedSignificant pressure redistribution for highest risk patients or those with pressure ulcers. Will address positioning needs. May be adjustable to meet individual patient needs.

■ ModerateHelps redistribute pressure for those at risk for pressure ulcers. May also help with positioning needs.

■ BasicAdds comfort for lower risk seated individuals.

Step 1: Choose the Level of Pressure Redistribution (see pages 24-27)

■ Foam Cushion:Most economical material. Typically usedfor comfort through moderate pressureredistribution. Different density foams can be used to address patient comfort,including more expensive visco elasticmemory foams. Different cut patterns are often used to prevent shear and helpreduce pressure.

■ Gel & Foam Cushion:Typically provide moderate to advancedpressure redistribution. Most commondesign is gel sacks placed between high-er quality foams. Gel sacks separatedinto quadrants perform best by keepinggel focused under problem areas toreduce pressure. Also designed to reduceshear and heat.

■ Air Cell Cushion:Typically provide the most advancedpressure redistribution. These cushionsare adjustable to meet the individualneeds of each patient. Redistribute pres-sure very well by distributing weightevenly. Tracks patient movements andadjusts to patient’s body contours elimi-nating pressure points.

Step 2: Choose the Type of Cushion Material

■■ Flat Cushions Sometimes referred to as a zeroelevation cushion, it has the samethickness across the entire cush-ion. Can be used for comfort orpressure redistribution.

■ Wedge Cushions Thicker in the front and anglingdown to a thinner back, it pro-vides support, stability and pres-sure redistribution for active usersthat tend to slide forward.

■ Pommel CushionsAbducts legs to reduce skin shearand pressure. Prevents hip rota-tion. Can be on a flat or wedgecushion.

■ Contour CushionsSometimes referred to as aSaddle Cushion, it emphasizesproper positioning and leg align-ment while reducing hip rotation.Provides pressure redistributionand comfort by increasing seating area.

■ Anti-Thrust Cushions Has a one inch shelf in the middle to reduce thrusting and sliding forward. Helps prevent sacral sitting. Low profile front minimizes leg elevation.

■ Back Cushions Provides comfort, support and cushioning onback and spine. Helps redistribute pressurewhile eliminating the hammock effect of a sling back.
