Divine Service – Setting Three p. 184Confession and Absolution

The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism.P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.C Amen.P Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess

our sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.

P Our help is in the name of the Lord,C who made heaven and earth.P I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord,C and You forgave the iniquity of my sin.

Silence for reflection on God’s Word and for self-examination.

P O almighty God, merciful Father,C I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and

iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justlydeserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I amheartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I prayYou of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, JesusChrist, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being.

P Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called andordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all ofyou, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ Iforgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Sonand of the Holy Spirit.

    C Amen.

  • you.P: Ask of me, and I will make the nations your | heritage,*

and the ends of the earth your pos- | session.C: You shall break them with a | rod of iron*

and dash them in pieces like a potter’s | vessel.”:P Now therefore, O | kings, be wise;*be warned, O rulers | of the earth.

:C Serve the | LORD with fear,*and rejoice with | trembling,

:P for his wrath is quickly | kindled.*Blessèd are all who take ref- | uge in him.

    All: Glory be to the Father and | to the Son*and to the Holy | Spirit;

as it was in the be- | ginning,*is now, and will be forever. | Amen.

  • Salutation and Collect of the DayP The Lord be with you.C And with thy spirit.

P Let us pray.Father in heaven, at the Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River Youproclaimed Him Your beloved Son and anointed Him with the HolySpirit. C Amen.

Old Testament Reading Genesis 1:1–51In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2The earth was

without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. Andthe Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

3And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4And God sawthat the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness.5God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there wasevening and there was morning, the first day.

A This is the Word of the Lord.C Thanks be to God.

Gradual Psalm 117:1–2a; 96:8All: Praise the LORD, all | nations!*

Extol him, all | peoples! For great is his steadfast | love toward us,*

and the faithfulness of the LORD endures for- | ever.Ascribe to the LORD the glory | due his name;*

bring an offering, and come in- | to his courts!

Epistle Romans 6:1–111What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may

abound? 2By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? 3Doyou not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus werebaptized into his death? 4We were buried therefore with him by baptisminto death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by theglory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.

5For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shallcertainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6We know that our

    4

  • old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might bebrought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. 7For onewho has died has been set free from sin. 8Now if we have died with Christ,we believe that we will also live with him. 9We know that Christ beingraised from the dead will never die again; death no longer has dominionover him. 10For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life helives he lives to God. 11So you also must consider yourselves dead to sinand alive to God in Christ Jesus.

A This is the Word of the Lord.C Thanks be to God.

Alleluia and Verse LSB 190C Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Holy Gospel Mark 1:4–11P The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the first chapter.C Glory be to Thee, O Lord.

4John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism ofrepentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5And all the country of Judea and allJerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in theriver Jordan, confessing their sins. 6Now John was clothed with camel’shair and wore a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wildhoney. 7And he preached, saying, “After me comes he who is mightier thanI, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. 8Ihave baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the HolySpirit.”

9In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized byJohn in the Jordan. 10And when he came up out of the water, immediatelyhe saw the heavens opening and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.11And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I amwell pleased.”

P This is the Gospel of the Lord.C Praise be to Thee, O Christ.

Apostles’ CreedC I believe in God, the Father Almighty,

    maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,

    5

  • who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life T everlasting. Amen.

405 To Jordan’s River Came Our Lord

5 The Father’s word, the Spirit’s flightAnointed Christ in glorious sightAs God’s own choice, from Adam’s fallTo save the world and free us all.

6 Now rise, faint hearts, be resolute; This man is Christ, our substitute! He was baptized in Jordan’s stream,Proclaimed Redeemer, Lord supreme.

January 10, 2021 – The voice from heaven reveals that Jesus is the chosen andbeloved Son of God. According to human thinking, it seems unlikely that Jesuswould come to John to be baptized. Yet He has come to be baptized, countedamong sinners, in order to redeem sinners. He counts Himself among us. In ourBaptism, we are united to His death and resurrection and so receive forgiveness forour sins.
