Three-dimensional urniture ronts, in short 3D or oil-laminated urniture ronts, are used today

all around the world or all types o urniture, mainly or cabinets in the bathroom and kitchen

area, but also or living rooms and bedrooms.

Innovative developments with regard to the ormulation o the materials used, plus the very high

degree o automation in the 3D oil laminating process, including the preparative and nishing

steps o the pieces in the manuacturing line all these actors add up to a highly complex

knowledge pool to which processors must have access to enable them to master the handling

and manuacturing processes required or these materials.

Top-ranking companies rom the entire chain o manuacturing, rom the raw materials

manuacturer to the processor, have thereore ormed an initiative group in which the wealth o

inormation and know-how can be pooled and made available to the processor.

The main objective is to achieve the utmost in quality in these urniture ronts, taking into account

the specic properties o the material, while maintaining the correct processing environment

and manuacturing procedures, to provide a durable and reliable product to both urniture

    manuacturers and the nal consumer.

Another point o equal importance is the harmonization o the specications in terms o materialproperties, storage conditions, processing parameters and test methods.

Accompanied by a consistent documentation o all relevant data gathered throughout the entire

process, it acilitates continuous batch traceability and guarantees optimum quality control.

We want to thank all companies involved or their close cooperation and trust, which made it

possible to compile the extensive know-how o all participants in this document.

Thermoplastic 3D urniture oils* are high-quality nishing materials which are used on

thermoorming presses, with and without membranes, to laminate breboard (MDF) or kitchen

cabinets, living room, bathroom and oce urniture.

It can be processed on all standard thermoorm presses which operate with heat, pressure and

vacuum, and which use a PUD adhesive to achieve a lasting bond on breboard (MDF).

    2.1 Thmptic 3D funitu fi

Furniture oils with thermo-orming properties or use on thermoorming presses with or without

membranes are impact-resistant hard PVC oils with single or multilayer structures.

Their suraces are protected by a highly light-resistant lacquer on PUR/acrylate basis.

The reverse side o the oils is coated with primer to ensure a sae and temperature-resistant

    bond.

The thermoplastic 3D urniture oils mainly consist o

    PVC,llerssuchaschalkandpigments

    stabilizers

In conormance with German Consumer Goods Act (Bedarsgegenstndeverordnung) as

amended 8 August 2007 and Chemical Prohibition Order (Chemikalienverbotsverordnung) as

amended 3 September 2007, the ollowing substances are not used in the manuacture o these

    oils:

    Formaldehyde

    Cadmium,lead,mercuryandchromiumcomposites(chromium6)

    5.2 Pressing

    5.2.1 Press systems / parameters

Below the specic characteristics o the various press systems ound in the eld are outlined.

    Speciccharacteristicsofpresseswithmembranes:

    - The membrane serves as a medium or the transerral o heat.

    - The oil is ormed over the component to be laminated by applying a vacuumand pressure onto the membrane.

    Specicpropertiesofpresseswithoutmembrane:

    - The heat is transerred directly rom the hot platen to the oil.

    - The oil is ormed over the component to be laminated exclusively by vacuum

    and pressure.

    5.2.2 Preparing the pressing cycle

The ollowing parameters must be checked beore processing:

    Foilthickness

    Colourandtypeofsurface(e.g.standardorhighgloss)

    Adjustthepressparametersunderconsiderationoftypeoffoilandroutingdesign

    Conditionofthegluedcomponents(adequateventilationandmaintenanceoftimelimits

    5.2.3 The laminating process

Laminating is carried out in two steps:

    Step 1: Preheating

    Step 2: 3D orming

5.2.4 Temperature of the heating platens and/or membrane

The setting depends on the oil type.

    Preheatingofthefoildependsonthetemperatureoftheheatingplatensormembrane

    Toachieveoptimumresults,theminimumactivationtemperatureintheglueline

must be clearly exceeded at a pressure o at least 3 bar.

rmkUsing a suitable measuring method (temperature strips, contact reading equipment,

T-proler etc.) the surface temperature of the foil respectively the glue line at the

edges and at the surface should be monitored and documented with the other process

    pmt.

If the surface or glue line temperatures are insufcient, the machine parameters

    (e. g. preheating time, press time, pressure, heating platen/membrane temperature) must

    be optimized accordingly.
