Immersion Cooling – Past and PresentMore Efficient Than Air, Water or Oil PAST - Has been around since the era of the Cray-2 supercomputer, PAST - Has been considered too advanced and costly for non-military applications until recently. PRESENT - At this day and age, this assumption is simply not true any longer and we cannot afford to
ignore this elegant solution to the high density cooling challenge. PRESENT - Traditional cooling systems that use air, water or oil are complex and costly. Open bath immersion cooling offers:
― A simpler, true alternative solution, saving large amounts of energy, greenhouse emissions and space.
― resolves a number of today’s engineering bottlenecks, allows manufacturers to build better hardware without heat transfer constraints, while also being much cheaper and less complex to build.
It's an open and future proof platform and it will play an important role in solving the energy crises we see in datacenters today.

Immersion Cooling In a two-phase (evaporative) immersion cooled system,
electronic components are submerged into a bath of dielectric heat transfer liquids, which are much better heat conductors than air, water or oil. With their low boiling points (ie. 49°C vs. 100°C in
water), they boil on the surface of the heat generating devices and rising vapor passively takes care of heat transfer. No fans or pumps are required for this process. No need for conventional cooling hardware with better
cooling efficiency. Compared to traditional air or water cooling, this passive
process results in the use of much less energy.

2-Phase Liquid Immersion CoolingOperating Principle
Servers are placed side-by-side in a lidded bath of dielectric fluid.
Devices cause fluid to boil. Rising vapor condenses on a condenser cooled
by facility water. Servers plug into an immersed backplane. Power and IO enter/exit through a conduit that terminates below the liquid level. Servers can be hot-swapped and leave the bath dry. The bath is “semi-open” as it is at atmospheric pressure. Bath breathes through a trap (not shown).

Immersion CoolingHigher Density Without the restrictions and overhead of traditional cooling
methods offers a much higher density, improved performance and the possibility for applications that would otherwise be impractical.
With a smaller package, lower power consumption and much less supporting infrastructure (ie. no chillers or air conditions), the choice of facilities becomes much less restrictive.
Eliminates the Heat Transfer Overhead for Product Designers
Our passive immersion cooled systems free the designer from all the overhead of a heat transfer system.
For developers, time to market can be greatly improved, Engineers focus on building the application instead of finding
ways to get the heat out.
Future-Proof (future hardware works without any changes) In an immersion cooled system, new hardware does not require any
resources for the heat transfer process. In other words, your immersion cooling enclosure will work with all your future hardware too. Out with the old, in with the new.
Non-proprietary - Universal Design Immersion cooling systems don't lock customers in to one
technology. What goes in enclosures and what connects to them is completely up to the end-user.
This holds true for server level hardware (inside the tank) and for facility level infrastructure.

Immersion CoolingImproved Performance and Reliability Hardware benefits from lower junction temperatures
and improved performance, no temperature swings or hot spots, and generally runs more reliable.
No unnecessary parts to build or service since the cooling system is passive and not attached to the hardware
Extremely Clean2-phase immersion cooling system has positive side effects on both, the device and facility level: Massive air flow, dust and noise are eliminated from the
facility. Having no fans, bulky heatsinks or air channels on the
hardware level results in a very clean and elegant design.
Board removal (swap) will come out dry, due to low temperature evaporation.
Zero Ozone Depletion Potential & Inherent Fire Protection
3M™ Novec™ Engineered Fluids have an excellent environmental, health and safety profile.
Novec fluid does not deplete ozone (zero ozone depletion potential) and has a very low global warming potential.
It is non-toxic and non-flammable. Because of its low global warming potential, Novec is used in
gas fire extinguishing systems by companies such as IBM in data centers worldwide.
Non-proprietary - Universal Design Immersion cooling systems don't lock customers in to one
technology. What goes in enclosures and what connects to them is completely up to the end-user.
This holds true for server level hardware (inside the tank) and for facility level infrastructure.

Immersion-2Real cost of ownership data are being generated during the building and start-up of Immersion-2. Built by Allied Control for a client in hot humid Hong Kong, the 500kW system started up with a PUE<1.01.
Conceptual Drawing of Immersion-2
Traditional Air Cooled DC• 4 kW/rack • 35 racks = 140 kW• 1 SQM per kW
Immersion-2•24 kW/rack
Immersion-2•75 kW/rack
When compared with a conventional air cooled data center, the space saving achievable with the Immersion-2 racks is dramatic, particularly if the racks are populated at their 75kW capability. Potential savings in real estate costs and annual
electricity expenditure for 10MW facility in Singapore

Novec 2-Phase Immersion Cooling Applications
Product Description Key Differentiators & ValueOpen Bath Immersion (OBI) Cooling Passive, 2-phase (evaporative) cooling technique that
involves immersing servers in a bath of Novec engineered fluids, non-electrically conductive fluids
• Potential to enable exascale computing• Potential to decrease power usage compared to traditional air-
cooling• Reduced need for air cooling infrastructure and liquid-cooling
pumps• Provides inherent fire protection for servers• Novec fluids have outstanding environmental profile
Convection Cooling Iceotope solution – Server is completely immersed in sealed bath of Novec which passively transfers heat away to a heat exchanger (with water coolant)
Other convection solutions are possible due to Novec’s highly efficient heat transfer properties
• Iceotope solution:• Reduces cooling costs by 97%, IT power load by 20%, and
overall infrastructure costs by 50%• Won GEIT (Green Enterprise IT) award for facility product
deployment in conjunction with Iceotope• Novec - >1000x more effective at carrying heat than air• Novec fluids have outstanding environmental profile
3M’s Liquid Immersion Cooling using Novec Engineered Fluids provides more efficient cooling than traditional air cooling, especially for high performance servers, and also provides inherent fire protection for servers.
