NEED TO KNOW
● Today’s lesson is all about temptation, and how Jesus helps us fight against it with God’s truth. Here’s a super easy definition for temptation: it’s when we think about making a wrong choice, or maybe we want to make a wrong choice, even though we know it’s not right.
GAME TIME | 10 Minutes
● Have kids do a physical “pull up” challenge to illustrate how temptation tries to pull us in the wrong direction.
COOL DOWN | 10 Minutes
● Transition and cool down from game time by discussing why temptation is hard, how we can fight it, and have some fun being “tempted” by real marshmallows!
LARGE GROUP | 15 Minutes
● Respond to today’s big idea through worship and prayer.● Practice this month’s memory verse: Mark 10:27 Jesus looked at them and said, “With
people this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
SMALL GROUP | 15+ Minutes
● Personally connect with kids and apply the story to their lives by FINALLY letting them eat their long awaited marshmallows, and creating a craft to help illustrate how Jesus helps us fight temptation with truth.
LARGE GROUP | 15 Minutes
● Introduce today’s big idea, Jesus helps us fight temptation, through the story of Jesus’ temptation in the desert.
● Scripture: Matthew 4:1-11
● Ask: Can I have four volunteers? (Have four kids come up and give them the rope, two kids on each side.) You’re going to play Tug-of-War! I’ll stand here in the middle, and whoever pulls the other past me, wins! Ready? (Let kids safely pull each other until one wins.) Good job, give a round of applause for our volunteers!
● Ask: Why is Tug-of-War is so fun to play? (Let kids respond.) It’s also hard to play too, because you’ve got people pulling as hard as they can in opposite directions! One side wants to go one way, and the other side wants to go the other way! That’s what temptation is like.
● Ask: What exactly is temptation? (Let kids respond.) Temptation is when we think about making a wrong choice, or maybe we want to make a wrong choice, even though we know it’s not right. Luckily, we don’t have to face temptation alone. Here’s our big idea:
● (Click to show slide) Jesus helps us fight temptation.● Say: Let’s watch a video to see some kids who are struggling with some
really hard temptation. As you watch, think about something in your life you REALLY want to do…even though you know it might be a wrong choice.
● Video: Marshmallow Test ● Ask: Did you see how badly those kids wanted the marshmallows? They
were tempted to eat the one marshmallow in front of them!

Jesus helps us fight temptation.
● Say: Jesus was tempted, too. He was 100% God, but also 100% human, which means he went through human things. Even though Jesus was tempted, do you think he ever actually made a choice to do what he knew was wrong? (Let kids respond). No way.
● Say: One day, Jesus went into the wilderness, so he could spend some time alone with God. While he was out there, Satan tried to tempt him into making some wrong choices. Let’s check out what happened in this video.
● Video: Jesus is Tempted● Say: So did Jesus ever give into temptation, and make a wrong a choice like
Satan wanted? (Let kids respond.) No way! Everything Satan said to Jesus was a lie, but Jesus defeated those lies with TRUTH. He used God’s own words from the Bible defeat temptation every time!
● Say: Let’s start game time to learn more about Jesus helps us fight temptation!
● Start the 10-Minute Countdown Timer● Split kids into small groups.

● Tell kids to find a partner and sit next to each other.● Have two volunteers demonstrate the following for kids:
○ Partners should sit down and face each other. Next, they put the soles of their feet on the floor, toes touching
○ Partners reach forward (bending their knees if they need to) and grasp hands.○ By pulling together (each partner pulling in their own direction) both partners try to slowly
stand up. Once they’ve done that, try to return to a sitting position in the same way.● Let kids try to do it on their own. If they fall, they have to start over. Once they do it successfully,
tell partners to pair up with another set of partners, and try to do the same exercise but with 4 people! You can let kids repeat as much as they want.
Say: Temptation tries to pull in a direction AWAY from God. We’re all going to have some fun pulling each other up in this fun exercise challenge!
If you have some extra time: Get back into large group and let some more volunteers play some rounds of tug-of-war (keep it to two kids to make sure it doesn’t get out of hand).
● Start the 10-Minute Countdown Timer● Split into small groups.● Grab 2 marshmallows per kid.

● Discuss: ○ What made it hard to pull each other up in that game?○ Have you ever felt “pulled” to do something wrong? Something you knew you shouldn’t
do, but that you wanted to do? Tell us about it.● Show kids the marshmallows, and tell them that we’re going to do an experiment like in the
video! They can have one marshmallow now...OR, they can wait until the end of the hour, and have TWO marshmallows then! Let kids choose what they want to do, and ask:
○ What makes it hard to face temptation?○ What did Jesus do when faced with the choice to make a wrong choice? ○ How does Jesus help US fight and overcome temptation?
● Play “Make Me Laugh”○ One person is chosen to sit down and try not to laugh. Everyone else does silly things to
try to get the person to laugh. No one can touch the person. If the person starts laughing, let someone else try. When you are ready to end the game, ask kids if it was difficult not to laugh when they really wanted to. Remind them that it’s hard to resist temptation, but Jesus helps us fight it.
COOL DOWN
● Play the 10-Second Countdown Timer to help redirect kids attention.● Ask: Who can remember our Big Idea? (Let kids respond.) ● (Click to show slide) Yep: Jesus helps us fight temptation.● Ask: Who can remember what Jesus did every time Satan tried to tempt him?
(Let kids respond.) Yep, he quoted God’s OWN WORDS right at him! He used God’s truth to fight and defeat temptation.
● Say: Think of one thing you are tempted to do. Don’t share it with anyone; just think of it in your head. Maybe you want to disobey your parents. Maybe you want to make fun of someone, or disobey a leader. Maybe you want to talk about someone behind their back. (Let kids have a few seconds of silence.)
● Say: No matter what you’re tempted to do, you can always use God’s truth to help you overcome it. Luckily, we have a whole Bible full of God’s truth that we can use to defeat Satan. Let’s look at a verse that’s full of God’s truth! (Lead kids in reading the following verse a few times.)
● Slide: Mark 10:27 Jesus looked at them and said, “With people this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
● Say: Remember, we can trust Jesus to help us fight temptation, because he’s actually been through it too! He knows what it’s like, so he knows how hard it is.

● Say: Let’s watch a video and listen to a song that’s all about how God’s love overcomes our temptation to be afraid and not trust God. You can sit and watch this video, or lay down, close your eyes and listen.
● Music Video: Jordan Feliz / Beloved● Ask: Now let’s get and dance to this music video about how Jesus is always
right on time, whenever we need him!● Music Video: Right on Time● Pray: Ask for a volunteer to come up and pray for the group. Encourage them
to ask God to help us overcome temptation by remembering his truth.
Jesus helps us fight temptation.
● Why did Satan tempt Jesus in the wilderness? (He wanted Jesus to sin, he wanted to tempt Jesus while he was fasting and praying to God)
● What kinds of temptation did Jesus have to fight? (Food when he was fasting, testing God to save himself, worshipping Satan)
● Is temptation the SAME as sin, or making a wrong choice itself? (Dive into this and encourage kids to describe why it’s different)
● What can we use to fight temptation? How does Jesus help us do it? (Help kids answer: we can read God’s word, the Bible, spend time with Jesus and pray to him, worship him and ask him for help.)

● Eat! Remember in cool down time, when you had to decide if you were willing to wait for two marshmallows, instead of being tempted with one right then? Well it’s time for your patience to pay off! (Give each kid two marshmallows IF they waited)
● First, hand each kid a dotted line template/verse card and set out markers.○ Tell kids to think of the temptation they already came up with, or think of a new one. Write
or draw it in the blank space.● Next, turn over the card to show Mark 10:27.
○ This verse is God’s truth, and we can remember these words when face hard choices. Let kids stick it directly on top of their written temptation (or “smash” it on the temptation, to show how Jesus smashes temptations to bits when we trust him and God’s truth!)
○ Encourage kids to set this verse card somewhere they can see it all the time. It can help them remember what God’s truth is, in the midst of temptation.

EXTRA TIME?
● Give kids a cryptogram sheet, a maze, or word-search activity sheets to work on until their parents pick them up.
Pray: Have kids find a partner, and ask each other what they need prayer for. Give them a few minutes to actually pray for each other! Or pray together as a whole group.
How can we overcome temptation? / We’re eating marshmallows today! Please let a volunteer know if there are any allergies.
