“My vision is to see a Nigerian manufacturing sector that is developing and achieving a GDP growth of 5% per annum for the next four years”
Exclusive interview with Reginald I. Odiah, Chairman Economic Policy Committee (EPC) of Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), Managing Director/CEO Bennett Industries Limited and Chairman Ikeja Forum (NERC).
The upcoming Nigeria Manufacturing Expo is MAN’s official trade expo.
Looking back on 2015, what are the most urgent matters MAN is looking at to address in 2016?2015 was particularly a difficult year for local manufacturers, reason being that it is an election year and government attention was majorly drawn into electioneering and winning the elections. Very little attention was paid to other sectors of the economy, especially manufacturing as is usual at these times. We are hoping and looking forward to Government now giving more time to the Real Sector – Manufacturing and Agriculture. We hope to prepare ourselves working with Government towards addressing the challenges of moving the real sector forward in 2016.
MAN has called for a massive investment to take the Nigerian manufacturing sector to the next level, where are you hoping these investments will come from?Generally speaking, we hope that the expected investment will come from two fronts – Internally from local investors who will take advantage of Government new policies and support via the CBN and BOI to expand their existing businesses, move into new areas of manufacturing. – Foreign Investors who will want to take advantage of new Government policies / investment climate and invest in areas of their interest.
Power is a big problem, are you hopeful that this is being addressed? The power sector is undergoing privatization and so far the Generation and Distribution segments have been fully privatized. Transmission segment still has some government hold though being managed by a private entity. Generally speaking, power issues are being addressed since the Government is so far moving in the right direction i.e. allowing the Private sector to take the driving sit and propel the sector. There are also new developments that would help to accelerate improvement of the sector, especially for the manufacturing Sector where inadequate power supply has done most damage.
The challenges are also business opportunities, what is your message to the prospective investor? To the prospective investors I say that Nigeria has very wide and unexploited business prospects ranging from solid mineral exploitation to Agriculture / Agro-allied etc. There are
opportunities for investors that have true love and interest in investing in Nigeria. The laws of the land are becoming more liberal and investor friendly.
How important is training for MAN?MAN attaches great importance to training for her Member Companies and Staff. For this reason MAN Resource Centre was established many years back and has recently been upgraded and giving more mandate for training and re-training of members Staff for capacity building etc.
Which particular manufacturing sectors are you most excited about?I am excited about all the sectors. However, for any sector to survive effectively there must be large local raw material content in production so as to reduce demand for foreign exchange especially now that the Country is going through foreign exchange difficulties. I am interested in encouraging sectors with large imported raw material content to look inwards and develop more local raw material content for their production.
What surprises you about this sector?I am surprised and excited with sectors that have looked inwards and achieved resulted. This is the way to go.
What is your vision for Nigerian manufacturing? My vision is to see a Nigerian manufacturing sector that is developing and achieving a GDP growth of 5% per annum for the next four years.
How excited is MAN about the Nigeria Manufacturing Expo?I am personally excited, but I leave the answer to this question to the Director General of MAN to give an answer. He is in a more vantage position on this.
What will be your message at the event? My message to Nigerians at this event is to be ready and participate in the event because it is going to be exciting with great opportunities for Business to Business discussions, Purchase of the latest of the arts production machines and equipment, development of joint ventures between companies and technology transfer.

“To enhance the performance of the manufacturing sector, government has to address the energy and infrastructural challenges
which has inhibited the maximum contribution of the sector to GDP and economic growth of this country.”
Exclusive interview with Mr. Yunusa S. Labaran, Substantive Director Trade, For: Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry
of Industry, Trade & Investment - Host Ministry at the upcoming Nigeria Manufacturing Expo in March 2016.
What current developments in Nigeria’s manufacturing sector are you most excited about at the moment? Thanks for this question. As a matter of fact in recent time the manufacturing sector has not been able to contribute maximally to the economic growth of this country because of challenges it has been facing in the area of energy and other critical infrastructure. However in recent time the country has witnessed stability in energy supply and this I believe would enhance production capacity of the manufacturing sector.
Diversification from oil based economy is the solution to the current dwindling fortune of oil market. The Ministry through the launching of the NIRP is therefore poised to diversify to areas Nigeria has comparative and competitive advantage.
What role can Government take to aid the development of the Manufacturing Industry? The immediate past government and current government have realised the critical role of the manufacturing sector and that diversification is the key to survival of the economy.
We, the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade & Investment are supportive of this. It is important to the GDP of this country. To enhance the performance of the manufacturing sector, government has to address the energy and infrastructural challenges which has inhibited the maximum contribution of the sector to GDP and economic growth of this country.
What have been the most challenging aspects of the NIRP and the manufacturing sector as a whole? The most prominent challenges are; supply side constraints, such as energy, infrastructural gaps, high cost of capital; low skills particularly, among the SMEs. However, the current government is addressing these issues through agencies such
as Bank of Industry, Industrial Training Fund (ITF), SMEDAN and the SME Funds from the CBN.
As the host ministry for the MAN Expo (Nigeria Manufacturing Expo) please share your views on the Nigerian manufacturing sector. What needs to happen to take the Nigerian manufacturing sector to the next level? We need to address our energy constraints, develop skills in the sector and provide greater support for SMEs as well as acquiring modern manufacturing technology.
To enhance the performance of SMEs, the Ministry through the GEM Project has launched the BDMP (Business Development Market Place) platform aimed at identifying the location of various SMEs in this country, constraints to growing their businesses, and thus providing them with technical and financial supports.
There will be several agenda topics aimed at supporting the key enablers of the NIRP discussed in the *mPAD round table sessions chaired by FMITI & MAN at the Nigeria Manufacturing Expo.
*Manufacturing Partnerships for African Development- Industrial Clustering- Factory Financing Mechanisms - Synchronizing Value and Supply Chains- ECOWAS Trading Zone- Nigerian Industrial Revolution Plan (NIRP)- Technical Workforce Training- Infrastructure - Energy Security
Which of these is of greatest importance to the development of the sector? And Why?

Even though all the listed are critical factors for the development of the manufacturing sector; infrastructure, energy Security and the implementation of the NIRP are of great importance to development of manufacturing sector.
It has been observed over the years that energy crisis, poor infrastructure such as road network, ports facilities, almost non-existence railway transportation, and the over dependence on oil which relegated the contribution of the manufacturing sector to the development of the economy, constituted impediment to the roles expected of the sector.
Therefore the NIRP which main objective is for diversification of the economy, and providing all enablers to actualise this objective is worth proper implementation by the current government.
What is the FMITI message to the International Export Councils and fellow Ministry Departments of Trade & Industry attending the mPAD sessions? All relevant stakeholders should be at the Nigeria Manufacturing Expo and mPAD (Manufacturing Partnerships for African Development). Let’s look at the key challenges we face in this sector together and come up with the solution for an action plan to overcome them. A road map for revamping of the manufacturing sector be evolved for the consideration of government.
Why is the FMITI endorsing the MAN Expo (Nigeria Manufacturing Expo)? We endorse the objectives of the event aimed at attracting FDI, supporting the NIRP in addressing supply side constraints as well as generation of jobs and wealth creation for Nigeria. These objectives are the corner stone of this government policy thrust and therefore require the support of all.
How important is the MAN Expo (Nigeria Manufacturing Expo on Nigeria’s manufacturing calendar?First and foremost, the plan for the Nigeria Manufacturing Expo is apt and timely because of government eagerness to reposition the manufacturing sector which hitherto has been neglected due to over dependence on oil. The timing of the Expo is appropriate as we would have expected it to come much earlier in order to address the concerns of the sector.
What are you most looking forward to at the MAN Expo (Nigeria Manufacturing Expo?I have been privileged to have attended international expositions organized in the world and the focuses have always been to showcase technological breakthrough of countries and attract the usage of such technologies to the needy countries. I envisaged that at the end of this expo, Nigeria manufacturers would be able to attract modern technology that can drive massive and speedy production of qualitative products for both domestic and international markets.

Tell us more about the recent certification the company obtained to manufacture components. How will this change the nature of your business? We have recently been certified by API to manufacture products within the following monograms: 5CT, 6A and 7-1.
What in your view are the main challenges in this industry? Raw Materials like steel, Government Regulations and Power Supply and other Infrastructures like roads.
What needs to happen to take the Nigerian manufacturing sector to the next level? The Government of the day needs to realize that until the nation becomes a manufacturing nation and export manufactured products to other countries, then shall we start a journey of robust economy.
What is your vision for the industry? My vision for the industry is to see Nigeria one day conceptualise robust engineering products design and then see through manufacturing and then managing the entire products life cycle.
You have signed up as a gold sponsor for the upcoming Nigerian Manufacturing Expo. What is the reason for partnering with us and what will be your message at the event? We are looking forward to promoting the message to the world that there are Nigerian companies that are focused on getting the journey started. We are happy to be part of this dream, though a very tough one.
Please tell us more about the manufacturing machines, automation technology and machine tools that Thompson and Grace Investments Ltd will be promoting to Nigerian manufacturers at the Expo? We are fully equipped to carry out complex Milling, Boring and Turning of mechanical components that service from: Aviation,
Marine, Automobile, Plastic Moulding, Energy, Power and Oil & Gas Sectors respectively, which are setting up very unique capabilities.
How will your manufacturing machines, automation technology and machine tools help Nigerian manufacturers become more competitive locally and internationally? As mentioned above, we have installed capacity that is able to manufacture complex mechanical engineering components such as ship craneshaft that is up to 8 metres long, turbine blades and other rotating components, propeller shaft, engine-blocks, and valves of complex geometry etc. Considering the cost of importation of some of these finished components and the lead time for delivery, we are sure that local patronage of our manufacture that is of international standards will be of great cost savings to the manufacturers.
In what way will your manufacturing machines, automation technology and machine tools improve manufacturing quality and increase productivity & efficiencies? We are very sure of value addition to the manufacturing industry because of the fact that our quality management systems conform to international standards for best practice such as API, LEEA, ISO etc. On increased productivity, I believe closeness to mechanical components that might be needed for repairs of machinery of some kind will cut on machine down time and help reduce lost time.
Why is it important for the industry to gather at such an expo? Because it will create opportunity for players to meet and network towards synergies.
What are you most looking forward to at the Nigerian Manufacturing Expo? Meeting of like minds that will advance the course of manufacturing in Nigeria
