Plant Now & Enjoy Summer Fruit from your Garden for Years to Come

We just brought in a full range of Dave Wilson container grown blueberries, pomegranates and figs that will complement the new season bare root collection. Here are just a few to consider:

In Blueberries we’ve selected great varieties that thrive in our climate. Choose from Sunshine Blue, South Moon, Misty, Jubilee, Pink Lemonade, O’Neal and Sharp Blue. We recommend preparing the soil with acid planting mix and locating the plants in morning sun until 1:00 p.m. for best results.

Figs and Pomegranates were born to live in our valley. These Mediterranean plants love our climate, are water-wise and thrive with very little care. •  Figs: Black Jack, Brown Turkey, Viollette de Bordeaux, Black Mission and Panache •  Pomegranates: My new favorite Ambrosia is the sweeest pomegranate you’ll ever eat, Sharp Velvet, Wonderful, Garnet Sash, Eversweet & Parfianka are among our collection.

“Kung hay fat choi”Chinese New Year Seasonal Favorites

February 13th is the Chinese New Year! Alden Lane has stocked a few special items typically used to decorate for Chinese New Year to invite good fortune into our house. Plant a flowering quince during this year’s celebration and have plenty of branches to cut and bring inside for future years. Flowering Quince is always in bloom during this time of year and symbolizes good health, prosperity and happiness. The blossoms on bare branches are excellent in flower arrangements and come in shades of red, pink and white.

Kumquats are also used to celebrate Chinese New Year as they are becoming fully ripe during the late winter months. The Chinese name for Kumquat translates to “Gold Luck” and Alden Lane has several varieties to choose from. This highly prized hardy citrus plant bears heavy crops of small fruits that are eaten skin and all. They can also be made into delicious jams, preserves, and relishes. Bring home good fortune and “Gold Luck” with a Kumquat.

As a special treat we are currently offering the Buddha’s Hand Citron. The fruit is traditionally brought inside and placed in a bowl for their wonderful fragrance. The fruit has virtually no pulp but can be sliced and candied in syrup for a unique treat. This is definitely a “conversation piece” in the garden so plant it somewhere it can be appreciated by guests. The gnarly fruit forms finger-like sections that resemble a hand and can bear quite heavily during this time of year.

Start now for bright blue Hydrangeas. January is the month to apply Master Nursery Hydra Blue and then apply monthly thereafter until summer for bright blue hydrangeas.

Seed Potatoes are available by mid-January. Choose from certified disease free white, red, and russet, blue, and gold seed varieties. Harvest new potatoes when plants begin to bloom in June and more mature potatoes when plants begin to die down in mid-summer. Pick up our handy planting guide.

Brighten your garden with jewel colored bedding plants. Refresh your garden containers with primroses, pansies, Iceland poppies and more. Check with our staff for helpful advice and ideas.

Choose your Camellias now. Seeing is believing so choose now while they are in bloom. The selection is great and you’ll be able to pick just the right color for your winter garden.

Feed your lawn monthly even during cold winter months. This not only maintains its attractive green color all winter it also minimizes rust disease and other problems resulting from malnutrition. Masters Fall and Winter Lawn Fertilizer is especially formulated for the winter season.

Time to dormant spray your fruit trees! Spray your fruit trees with Bonide All Seasons Spray Dormant Oil NOW! This will take care of the overwintering pests that will pose a problem during the growing season. If you missed the fall application of Bonide or Monterey Cop-per Fungicide, go ahead and apply it the week before or after the application of the Oil. You’ll follow this up with Copper Dormant spray around Valentine's Day.

Spray your roses now. An application of dormant oil just after winter pruning on roses will help reduce pest populations by smothering over-wintering eggs. Spraying fungicides, as well, will halt diseases such as rust, blackspot and powderey mildew. Bonide All Seasons Spray Oil is listed for use on organic gardens.

Prevent Peach Leaf Curl! Protect fruit trees and deciduous shade trees from over wintering diseases and pests. Use Monterey Liqui-Cop, or Bonide Liquid Copper.

Protect frost tender plants when frosts are expected. Spray with Cloud Cover or Freezepruf; and for added protection, drape frost tender plants with Fast Start Plant Blanket Fabric. Try not to let the covering material rest on the plant. String non-LED Christmas tree lights on your frost tender plants when a freeze is expected. The warmth from the bulbs will provide another measure of protection.

Prune most fruit trees, roses and other leafless trees and shrubs from December through January. WARNING: Do not prune spring blooming shrubs and trees such as lilac, quince, flowering cherry etc. until the blooming period is over.

Keep up your New Year’s Resolution . . . join the Livermore-Amador Valley Garden Club (www.lavgc.org) and the Mt. Diablo Rose Society (829-4929).

Think Strawberry shortcake! This is the month to plant perennial vegetables and fruits. You can set out strawberries, rhubarb, raspberry, blackberry and many other cane fruits.

If you like asparagus, horseradish and artichokes we have starts for those too. Come by and let us help you choose your favorites.

Prevent crabgrass in your lawn before it starts. Apply Master’s Lawn Fertilizer Plus Crabgrass Control now to prevent crabgrass seeds from sprouting.

Place three inches of mulch around trees, shrubs and flowerbeds to keep weeds under control. Keep the mulch away from the trunks of trees and shrubs as well as the stems of bedding plants to prevent crown rot.

A blooming orchid for your love this Valentine’s Day says it best! Choose from an assortment of fragrant blooming bulbs, African violets, cyclamen and lush houseplants.

Prevent Petal Blight. Pick up and remove old flowers on camellias and azaleas to reduce the chance of petal blight. Ask about treatment options: Bayer Fungicide, and if it is available, Captan. (Captan works great and we are waiting for registration.)

Whether planting a new tree or pruning an established tree, now is a great time to apply Frazee Tree Trunk White to the trunks of fruit trees to prevent sunburn and help manage boring insects.

Prune evergreen shrubs and hedges such as boxwood between mid-February and early March so that pruning cuts are quickly covered with spring’s new growth. Leave frost tender plants like citrus to prune later. Prune strap leafed New Zealand Flax and African Iris to 4" if a biennial renewal is wanted. Foliage will grow back with a fresh crop of gorgeous leaves.

Apply Iron Sulfate or non-staining Iron Plus now to help restore and maintain good green color in acid loving plants such as citrus, camellia, azalea, gardenias, Japanese Maples and Blueberries, as well as many others including jasmine and photinia.

Late January through early February is the ideal time for preventing many weeds in the garden using pre-emergent weed control products. Many weeds will wake up with the first warm weather and the rains will only encourage them. Take advantage of this narrow window of opportunity to prevent weeds in your garden this year before weather warms and weeds sprout. Just a reminder, Pre-emergent weed preventers don't affect existing plants or weeds. Prevention is the best cure, and an application of pre-emergent weed preventer in February and also in September will go far in the battle against garden weeds.Apply one of the following options:

Concern Organic Weed Stopper Plus (Corn Gluten Meal); Pre-Seeder-Weeder (granular) - water in to activate;Monterey Weed Impede®-Surflan® (liquid concentrate) easy to use; Green-It liquid corn gluten.

Only one rose captured this year’s All American Rose Selection award. Hybrid Tea Francis Meiland won the honor. It is a large flowered (60-65 petal count) shell pink rose with a strong fruity-citrus fragrance. The foliage is dark green and glossy on a tall plant growing to 6 feet. It’s perfect for enjoying in the garden or for its cut flowers.

Two Eyeconic series roses will be added to our collection. Although single petaled they are show stopping. Eyeconic Melon Lemonade is apricot with a pink eye and Eyeconic Pomegranate Lemonade is deep pink with a magenta eye. These roses are very unique, heavy bloomers that add loads of color to the garden all season.

Love Song is a floribunda rose that produces clusters of long lasting ruffled lavender blooms.

Sparkle & Shine: Sparkling clear yellow floribunda with glossy green foliage is disease resistant. It can stand

alone or would make an easy care flowering hedge.

Austrian Copper: Old fashioned single petals of hot orange-red cover this tough shrub rose that tolerates harsh conditions.

Moje Hammarberg: hard to pronounce easy to love! This hardy, disease resistant plant has red-violet camellia like blooms with a strong spicy fragrance.

We have an expanded selection of David Austin & Romantica Roses both in the traditional bush & climbing forms and new this year in trees. P  36" tree form plants include: Darcy Bussell – Rich Crimson; Molineux – Rich Yellow; Sir John Betjeman – Bright Yellow; Winchester Cathedral – Pure White. P  Don’t miss these climbers: Heritage – Soft Pink; Jude the Obscure – Soft Yellow; and Wollerton Old Hall – Soft Cream.

January is Pruning Month As the temperatures have typically dropped and held low for a few weeks by mid-January, most deciduous trees and

shrubs are ready for their annual pruning. Alden Lane Nursery has a few helpful resources for assisting you in this sometime overwhelming subject. First of all, please take advantage of a number of pruning classes scheduled over the next month. We also have a great selection of tools and gloves and helpful pruning books. Our web page also includes pruning diagrams for guidance.

For pruning fruit trees, pick up a copy of a very handy pruning book titled, “How to Prune Fruit Trees” by Robert Sanford Martin. This book packs a wealth of information into its 90 pages, covering virtually every type of fruit tree and fruiting vine home gardeners will encounter. The book illustrates and explains in a brief format how each type of tree produces fruit and what pruning is required to help, not hinder fruit production. Every fruit tree owner should have a copy.

Finally, in the line up of pruning aids, what can be more helpful than a good pair of gardening gloves? West County Gloves offers a nice collection of well-made gloves tha tare comfortable and engineered to wear well. Their Work Glove, styled like a biking glove, is our best selling glove. West County Gloves also produces the amazing Gauntlet Rose Glove. Tested here at the nursery, this glove will allow you to thrust your hands into rose pruning chores without fear of thorns tearing up your hands.

Choose Some of the Best Pruning ShearsFelco brand pruning shears are the highest quality pruning shears we are aware

of, worldwide. They are imported from Switzerland and are built with such quality they have been known to last for decades. We invite you to place a pair in your hands and compare the feel and fit to other pruners. We have a hands-on display to help you explore your options. After you sample a pair we think you will want to add these to your own wish list; or you may want to buy a pair for another gardener in your home who won’t mind if you borrow the pruners from time to time for your own use.

Fresh Fruit from Your GardenFruit Trees will be Available

by Late January at Alden Lane Nursery

Nothing beats the taste of a sun-warm, tree-ripened fruit picked straight from the tree in your own yard. You know it’s fresh, juicy and with the right cultivation, pesticide and chemical-free which you can’t always say about store bought fruit, which is often held in cold storage for months and has been treated with who-knows-what to get that perfect market appearance!

We have a great inventory of fruit trees, berries and grapes available for your selection. All of our trees are planted in bio-degradable pulp pots which prevent damage to the roots. This means you’ll have even more success than with traditional bareroot plants.

Consider using fruit trees in the yard to provide shade or block unwanted views. You don’t need a lot of space. Grow an espaliered apple or pear along your fence or wall train a grape or kiwi up over an arbor or trellis, plant a dwarf peach or apple in a container on your deck. Plant a combination multi-graft tree – it will give you a summer of fruit!

Varieties on our list are selected to be successful in our area. Also there is a choice of two different combination Fruit Salad trees and over 20 varieties of grapes.

So come in and meet our expert staff. They’ll be happy to help you choose the correct varieties based on ripening times, taste and space availability. We’ll provide you with planting instructions and all the necessary items and knowledge to get you growing. Whether you have space for a whole orchard or just a single tree – come in and see our extensive selection and soon you’ll be picking ripe fruit from your garden.
