BackgroundThis school has a large (85% ELL) population. Classes meet weekly for 45 min. Because most are new English learners, the students have a very hard time articulating or expressing thoughts verbally or in writing. Any amount of written response is difficult. Very few students are on grade level in Language Arts.

Students were given some basic assignments during August and early September, including sketching places they would like to visit. They then were asked to answer questions about these sketches. These served as a Point A for this collection.

Lesson narrative

Point A: In September, students were asked to sketch drawings of places they like or want to go. They were asked to answer questions about the sketch

● Obj: I can explain the choices I make in my artwork.

What is going on in your drawing? What inspired you to do this drawing? What are elements are you using? How do you want people to feel when they see your drawing?

Point B: In February, students were introduced to the artwork of Marc Chagall, and viewed a biography video about the artist and his artwork. We discussed the reason why people call his artwork Dream Painings, noting that he didin’t use realistic colors or scale, though the images usually were recognizable. The teacher led a group discussion while observing various artwork by Chagall. Then, students were asked to do quick sketches (thumbnails) of some different ideas they might like to include in their own “dream paintings,” restating that the ideas do not have to be from their sleeping dreams but could also be from daydreams or fantasies, or dreams you wish to fulfill. (1 class)

Next class, students took their thumbnail sketches and chose some of their favorite ideas to use for their dream painting. Students started by drawing their ideas, turning their paper so that some things looked like they were floating and so that things were not to scale. Students enjoyed drawing freely, without trying to make things be realistic. Students added patterns and textures with crayon. Students then looked at each others papers and gave opinions as to whether they needed more to fill the space.(1 class)Next class, we met on the carpet to review the artwork of Chagall, noticing his colors and the way they made us feel. We had a class discussion about the way certain color schemes (warm, cool, lighter, darker) made us feel. Students then used liquid watercolor to paint their artwork. Lines were traced over with crayon before painting, to create a resist, and more crayon or oil pastel could be added to enhance the art.

Students then were given questions and some sentence starters to write sentences about their choices in their artwork.

Growth is shown in the explanation of choices from point A to point BExemplar

Emerging, Point A (Aug/sept),Level 1 - insufficient use of symbols and meaning

What is going on in your drawing?Me and my friend outside in flowersWhat inspired you to do this drawing? I like flowersWhat art elements are you using?Line shape crayonHow do you want people to feel when they see your drawing? Happy

* This student was ranked as level 1 for this sampling because she showed very little details or meaning and was not able to tell why she chose the subject matter, other than “I like flowers). She does list line as an elements of art, but then lists shape and crayon which are wrong and lack detail.(just “shape” not triangle or circle) The answer for the last question seems very typical and not thought out. The drawing itself does not include many details that show us who or where the girls are, and the people are drawn immaturely for a 3rd grader (partial stick people). No horizon line or background detail.Exemplar

Level 4/5- masterful use of meaning - much detail and explanation now are evident. Constructive planning is improving as seen in the planning sketches. Student can explain her choices extensively as seen in her writing (far right)She drew non detailed stick people in her sketch, but improved the detail in her final painting, putting a multi-colored dress on herself because she is an artist.

planning/brainstorming sketch (above) shows student was able to draw and explain many different ideas to use in her painting, and she uses these ideas and modifies others to execute her painting.

Emerging Point B, (march), shows 3 levels of growth from 1 to a 4

For this project, we learned about Marc Chagall. His paintings do not look real. He painted the way he dream or feel. For my dream painting, I included me as a artist. I colored it all of the colored dress because it makes me feel happy and arty. A dog, I colored it orange because my dog is brown but I wanted it to be different. Me painting because one day I want to be a great artist. A new house because Ihop to get a new house one day. I colored it orange because orange is a happy color and I would be happy if I get a bigger house. I put a sun coming up over a hill because it sunrise and new day to be new. I put my babe(baby) sister in a circle float. I use dark purple an blue for background so my yellow an orange and light color stand out. I hope people feel happy and createv when they look at my art.Exemplar

Proficient point A - aug/sept Level 2- progressing with using meaning - Lacking details to show full meaning of the story. The drawing is from memory but drawn with a degree of accuracy.

What is going on in your drawing?I playing my xbox live! What inspired you to do this drawing? xboxWhat art elements are you using?Pencil, crayon, colorHow do you want people to feel when they see your drawing? I hope people feel happy

* This student was ranked as level 2 for this sampling because he showed very little meaning and was not able to tell why he made his choices. By writing “I was playing xbox live” but not drawing himself anywhere, this shows little thought. He does not list any elements of art, just tools he used. The answer for the last question seems somewhat typical and not thought out. He does show the box in perspective and a horizon line, along with two controlers in detail so this was a proficient example for this class. Exemplar

Level 4/5- masterful use of meaning - much detail and explanation now are evident.Constructive planning is improving. Student can explain his choices extensively as seen in his writing (far right) His writing is not very good grammatically but his ideas are expressed. This student is ESL.

For this project, we learned about Marc Chagall. His painting do not look rill(real). He painting the way he fill(feel). For my dream painting I included: 1. Big wolf-I colored it orange and blue and green because t makes me feel happy to use those color. 2.Dragon-I colored it green and brown because it maks me feel joyful 3. Monster-I colored it brown because it is a boy. 4. Monster sister-I colored it pinc (pink) because it a girl. My dragons love people and save them from monster. My favorite part of my art is the dragon because I love dragons. I hope people feel excited when they look at my art. I color bright pattern on my borders to show excitement and action. There is a 3 headed monster in my art and 3 other monster. My dragon and orange wolf are slay (slaying) the monsters. The green wing on the big dragon makes it look bigger than it is to scare of monster. I like my dream painting a lot! I hope people understand my dream when they look at it. I hope they excited but not scared. I like my color and my dark outline and zig zag the best.

Advanced - point A - aug/sept

What is going on in your drawing?I drew my house, tree and sunny yard. What inspired you to do this drawing? I think about play outsideWhat art elements are you using?Shape, color, circle, rectangleHow do you want people to feel when they see your drawing? Happy, good, calm

This student was ranked as leve 3 for this sampling because she does show some thought as to her artmaking. She would be considered a level 3 on the scoring guide (sufficiently uses symbols to show meaning) She uses the word “sunny” to describe her yard. She indicates that she was thinking about playing outside for the inspiration. She names some art elements (shape, color) but also misrepresents other elements of art. Her description of how she wants people to feel is not very developed and lacks some meaning.

Level 3 - sufficiently uses meaning

Advanced Point B, (march), shows 2 levels of growth from 3 to 5Level 5 - masterfully uses constructive planning and symbols for meaning and can explain her choices as seen in her artist statement. (right)

planning/brainstorming sketch (above) shows student was able to draw and explain many different ideas to use in her painting, and she uses these ideas and modifies others to execute her painting. She did not plan all of the aspects of her painting but her art shows she was spontaneous

This project took several steps. Before beginning, I learned a little about … Marc Chagall. In my dream painting I included:A yellow bunny because.. It reminds me of my dead bunny. 2 talking trees because.. I don’t want to feel alone.A giant house because.. One day I would want to live in one.A car because...I want to drive all day and go wherever I want. A ice cream because.. I like ice cream and want to swim with my ice cream.A bike because.. I want a big bike and I love bikes.A colorful bird because… I never saw one and would like to see one. Then, I thought about my feelings. Next I had to dream all my feelings about I thought. I then used some colors rainbow colors. Finally, I painted my drawing with a sense of freedom. My colors did not need to make sense because Marc Chagall’s art did not. I like doing this because.. I could dream what I feel and what I dream. I hope that people feel what i feel when they look at my artwork, happy and joyful to be painting.Exemplar
